Aya
Part Eighteen
I sent Henley to go and get the bits for our baby. He was so reluctant bless him, he didn't want to let go of Kaida. For long long minutes he stared at his tiny fingers and toes and little button nose and rubbed his nose in the thin dark hair on his tiny head. Now I had Kaida all huddled up on my chest fast asleep. I couldn't stop staring at him either. He was small, a little early but perfect. My heart had umpteen amounts of room for both of them and more. It's funny because being pregnant I knew we had a baby, but actually having here in my arms made it even more real. "Hey beautiful baby," I whisper sang as I run my fingers over his smooth warm skin. He felt like velvet, he smelled like a baby, which is weird. But he did.
The hospital offered a small baby grow but I wanted him in the ones we bought, so a nappy had to make do and my warm embrace. "Hey bro," I looked up as the door opened to see Aida smiling. "Oh my god," he rushed towards us and stole the seat Henley had already claimed next to me. "He's so….oh god, so beautiful."
"I know," I felt my tears again. I'd cried a lot since having him which was only ten hours ago but I'd done enough crying to last me a lifetime and apparently I had more to do. "Aida, he's just...awesome."
"Let me cuddle my little nephew."
I don't want to let go of him. But this special time wasn't just mine and Henley's. "Here, be careful of his head."
"I'm not that retarded," Aida said, then chuckled as he took him carefully. "He's so tiny. Oh my god, look at his tiny fingers."
"He looks like me, right?"
"He looks like a baby you idiot."
"Like me?"
"Well, you are a bit of a baby, so I guess so. Still he's just, I don't even know. I always thought babies looked like ugly aliens, but he's so damn beautiful."
"I'm happy you're not calling my child an ugly alien, I'd punch you."
Aida hummed as he rocked Kaida in his arms, like the proud uncle he now was. "Aya I'm so proud of you. You carried him in your belly."
"I know, for eight and half months."
"Stupid," he whispered and held Kaida close to him. "I spoke to mom and dad."
"And?"
"They said they'll be up later. They're busy in meetings."
"That's understandable."
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm in pain, I had my stomach cut open. I'm not gonna be doing cartwheels although I'd love to."
Aida sniggered and went back to looking at Kaida. He touched his tiny fingers and then his tiny toes. Henley was the exact same. Both idiots. "Uncle Aida is going to teach you all those bad words momma won't let you say."
"You best be joking."
"I'd love to say I am, but no I'm not. I'm the cool uncle, remember."
"You'll be the six foot under uncle."
"Momma is only joking," He whispered and went back to gently rocking him. "So, this is like your happily ever after?" He asked.
I thought for a second. How generic. How underwhelming. The truth is much more powerful. Life with Henley makes the blood pound harder in my chest. Makes every minute worth remembering. Makes building a life for my family a privilege. Certainly all that is better than happily ever after. "No, it's not the end just yet," I grin as I watched my brother holding my newborn. "It's only just started. We have so much more to do."
"Such as?"
"Like getting married. I want Henley's last name and we definitely want more kids."
"Okay, so you're both bonkers. But you know I'll be by your side every step of the way, except the baby making," He sniggered again. "I guess you want your son back?"
"Err, obviously. Now gimme."
"I love you Aya."
"I love you too," fuck, the tears. "Now gimme my baby and get me something to eat, pretty please."
"Fine, you're lucky I love you," He said around a huge smile as he passed Kaida back to me. "I'll be back soon."
"Okay," I sniffed and wrapped my arms around Kaida's tiny body, then watched as Aida left the room. "We are so lucky my baby. A great uncle and an awesome daddy. You're going to grow up big and strong and with any luck maybe you'll have a baby sister to love and protect too," I liked what Henley said back before we knew we were pregnant. That we could have our very own little person to play with and teach, I didn't think it would feel this good actually having that. Except Aida and his foul language, but Kaida will have so many people who will show him how good life is and show him that no matter who you are or where you come from love is love and it's beautiful. "You really are so lucky…."
I was dragged from my thoughts when Henley came bursting through the door. Sweaty and red faced. "Aya...I have the goods," he panted and held up two bags. "Baby stuff..., and cheesecake."
"Henley your wonderful," I felt my bottom lip quiver as tears pooled in my eyes. "I...I really love your penis." I blurted. Okay it wasn't meant to actually come out like that, but it made him smile.
"That's good to hear," He said and settled in the chair next to my bed. "Because this fabulous penis is going to be knocking you up again."
"Not yet."
"Not yet, but soon….hopefully," He started pulling baby grows and vests and those little gloves things for babies' hands out of my bag. "I wasn't sure what ones you wanted so I bought a few for you to choose from."
"That one." I pointed.
"What one?"
"The one that says mommy and daddy's little miracle."
"Oh I like that one too, because he is our little miracle."
"Or happy accident."
"I like miracle better," His eyes got all glassy as he stared at me. "Let's get him dressed into his first little outfit."
I laid Kaida down on the bed, being careful of the clip attached to his belly button and I looked at Henley. "Go on daddy, you dress him," Henley's eyes lit up as he stood and got comfortable on the end of the bed. I watched him, like I always do. Like I did when we first met. Like I did when I woke up the morning after sleeping with him which was mind-numbingly creepy at the time, but I couldn't help myself. And the same as I do when he's pottering around the kitchen cooking for me or watching TV. I'm always always watching him. Now I had even more reasons to watch him. To see the love bloom on his face when Kaida was born. The look he had when Kaida first cried. The big smile he had on his face when he first held him. I thought I'd seen all of Henley's different expressions, but I was so far from seeing them all and I had the rest of my life to witness every one. Not only was it special and perfect, it was a privilege. He's given me more than anyone ever could. "Marry me Henley." I asked as he carefully dressed our son. Our son, I'll never get tired of that. Ours, all ours to love and cherish.
"Of course, that was next on the list beautiful." There's only one way I could ever thank Henley for chasing me and that's giving him myself, eternal...not just with my mark, but tethered by marriage….oh and more babies, so two, no three….fuck it, a million. A million thank yous' Kaida being our first of many mini me's and mini Henley's. I hope it's twins next time. "Henley, tell me about us."
"A story, right?"
"If you want."
He smiled as he snapped the last little button in place on Kaida's baby grow and moved to settle next to me. "Okay. I met a guy, who's tenacious. Wild and curious. He made my night when he said yes and made my life when he offered himself to me wholly without ever being asked to. Then as time went on he gave me someone else to love. Now I have two beautiful guys in my life. Kaida has my hair and will have your big bright eyes. Kaida will have all of my favorite parts of his momma. Your gentle and big heart. Kaida will forgive easily and will always want to do the right thing because his brilliant parents will teach him how beautiful the world is with unclouded eyes and an open heart. Then we will have fun making more babies and just being us….how's that?"
"Perfect." So...this wasn't some fairytale happily ever after, it was our forever, as happy as we can possibly be until we are old and too tired to be anything but old. And just….love on.
