Winter fitted in with the class without much trouble. He did have a lot of experience fitting into groups that consisted of mostly males, so he wasn’t really that nervous. He just had to make sure nobody saw him naked or did a DNA test on him, and he should be fine.
“Hey, Winter, do you like winter or something?” A rather unpleasant looking boy asked from the back of the class after the lesson was over and professor Heart had left the room.
“Shut up, McCoy, you’re not one to talk” another boy shot back, sending a glare towards McCoy along with it.
Winter laughed a bit at the exchange and tried to figure out the class hierarchy. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the boy called McCoy seemed to be the wannabe-cool-guy, while the still-unnamed guy having helped seemed like the more popular type.
“It’s okay, McCoy. I was named after my father, and we couldn’t very well have two Winston’s in the house, now could we? So one day my drunk uncle accidentally called me Winter, and it just sort of stuck” the pre-rehearsed lie came out without a problem, and Winter thought to himself that it was a pretty great one at that. Natural, funny and most importantly, believable.
A dry laugh from McCoy seemed to send the rest of the class into a real laughter, and that was how Winter quickly established himself in the class.
“I’m the class president, and would like to give you a tour of the school ending with showing you your dorm and introducing you to your roommate. Would that be fine with you, Winter?” The boy that shot back at McCoy before stood close to Winter and started listing up everything he thought Winter needed to know. Winter really just wanted to know his name, though that did not seem important enough to make it into his speech.
“Yes, I would appreciate that, eh… I don’t think I catched your name?” Winter said in a most natural manner, making it seem like the person in front of him didn’t forget to introduce himself, but rather, that Winter had already forgotten the introduction.
Appreciating the leeway he was presented to, the boy smiled at Winter, most likely making an extra note of him.
“It’s Dean” Dean said, in a voice that didn’t resemble the one that had told off McCoy just a minute earlier.
Winter and Dean started their tour, with Winter constantly keeping track of wherever they went. Dean was good at keeping a conversation and knew a lot about the school. There wasn’t a single second of awkward silence.
Finally getting to the dorms, Dean knocked on the door that said ‘Winston Pier and Thom Pierce”.
“It’s open” a rough voice called from the inside.
Dean lead the way in, walking in front of Winter who followed behind, having remembered to walk a bit more slouchy, but in a formal manner.
“This is your new roommate, Winter, I hope you’ll treat him well. Otherwise I’m going to tell professor Heart and he will give you more homework” Dean said, smirking, while making a gesture towards Winter.
“Typical of the old chap. Huh, I thought your name was Winston” the rough voice belonging to Thom said, a bit perplexed.
“Whatever, I’m Thom, the H is silent, so basically just Tom. My mom thought it looked too normal, so here we are” Thom with a silent H said, getting up from his bed, presenting himself properly.
“Well then, I’m going to let the two of you get to know each other. Tell me if you have any questions. If I remember correctly, both of you have the same class tomorrow morning, so could you please show Winter the way, Thom?” Dean was polite and proper in his way of talking, but also very direct. He had first spoken directly to Winter, but mid-sentence switched over to talking to Thom with his entire demeanor. After both of them had nodded, Dean went out.
“Sooo, Winter, huh?”
“Drunk uncle” Winter answered, being busy with looking around the room. It wasn’t that big, but it wasn’t too small either. As he had feared, it was just a single large room, with two beds and no privacy. Would he have to sleep with his binder like this? That couldn’t be healthy… Maybe he could get up a curtain around the bed, but then again, that might be a bit weird.
“Ah, know the feeling. Drunk mom” Thom shot back, pulling Winter back into his current situation.
“Ah, that sucks. Overly religious parents” Winter felt the need to retort.
“Bummer. Cheating dad, openly” Before they knew it, it had turned into a contest of who had it worse.
After that went on for a while, the two boys laughed, and Winter felt grateful for his new roommate.
“Just a fair warning. I tend to spend a long time in the bathroom in the morning” Because my binder is a bitch, Winter thought.
“So should we have a kind of plan, or just have you pee in your pants?” Winter continued.
“I’m just gonna pee my pants or pee in your bed” Thom teased, and the two boys once again bonded over something stupid.
And thus the second secret continued.
