Morgane had gotten up early that morning, she was excited that her first rotation in the work training program was going to be at the archaeology site. She was drawn to it, she had gone to it to watch the workers any time she had some free time. A few months before she and her best friend had completed what the surfacers would call “high school”, though based on an equivalency test her class took they knew more than most of the college graduates on the surface. Maybe it was due to the process the students were educated in Oceana, Morgane wasn't really sure.
Morgane was being very careful in how she attired herself for this day, she knew it had to be designed for getting dirty as it is likely she'll be digging in the sea floor somewhere. She picked out some denim and a loose shirt and put a jacket into her pack in case it was a cool day in the research dome. Morgane smiled a bit as she dressed, her best friend Triton was as excited as she was she knew. While his parents had made all of the clothes she wore, he had different aspirations. He wanted to take care of the main library, and he was working there starting today. It is interesting how the city leaders fit us to the work fields we prefer first, she thought to herself; but that was the point yes? To make sure we love and excel in the career we will have for the rest of our working lives?
Morgane had heard that on the surface people have a hard time figuring out what they we good at and sometimes spent their whole lives working without loving what they did. Sometimes even having multiple careers over their working time. It didn't seem to make very much sense to her as it is inefficient to do that, the people in the city of Oceana all loved what they did and did those things very well unless they fell ill.
She had also heard that the students can have a great deal of trouble learning things taught and sometimes need to be taught at a lower level just so they can pass a basic level of reading and math. While in their school and from what Morgane knew; the other schools as well the students all had tutors for subjects they needed but didn't do well in. By the time Morgane had graduated “high school” everyone in her age group all had the same basic knowledge. Students were placed in groups based on what they knew and the speed they learned at. Granted, she thought my “history” class had covered a great deal more including basic archaeology and spent six months debating the origin of intelligent life. All while the rest of the students of the same age “caught up” to the basic requirement for the subject.
Triton's reading and language classes had far outstripped her's as Triton could speak five languages fluently as well as read in them and write in them. While she barely knew how to speak and write in two, she of course learned English (American dialect); and her for her family Gaelic. Though, Morgane had learned a few of the different forms of hieroglyphs in existence; she had learned Egyptian, Aztec, and Incan. They had fascinated her, so she spent one of her farm tour's learning them in the evenings. Granted Triton had learned them as well, but to Morgane's amusement it had taken him longer to learn the images.
Morgane leaves her room with her packed bags, packed because due to the job internment requirements she will be living at a “dorm” near the site ensuring that she didn't have to go far while she learned what she needed before deciding in six months if she wanted to keep it as her adult career. Something interesting had occurred during the first sixteen years of the city's life, one of which was that it was discovered that the colleges they had set up for higher education were completely useless based on the system they had for educating children. As once even the semi-surfacers (those born on the surface but live in Oceana), had been in the system that was put in place in the city they progressed faster in the education realm. So the colleges were re-purposed as extra schools for specialized subjects, Morgane and Triton had both gone to one of these as they did well in subjects that needed more space.
Another interesting thing that was discovered to be within the budding city, a great deal of the new residents had an interest in mid evil styled events. Enough that there was now a tourney arena, as well as two dedicated blacksmiths; which had a side benefit. Many a cook be it household or restaurant wanted some home made cast iron pans as well as locally made kitchen knives. It also became a good way to settle personal disputes between two individuals, they were permitted to “call out” a person they had an issue with. The two people would then duel till a “first blood” strike, and the victory is the person who is considered in the right. Now in the case where a person's skill is at a great disadvantage to the other, it is possible to call on someone more skilled to undergo the bout instead. This prevents people from just blatantly creating an argument with anyone who has something better than another. The surfacers thought it was barbaric, but with the community within the city it worked out well, and at least in one amusing case a marriage happened due to one. When this first came about all the schools in the city instituted a required swordsmanship class, Morgane was one of the highest rated women in the city; she was asked often to stand in for someone.
