Heading back up the stairs of the hall was faster, but also slower if you get what I mean. Considering the floor collapsed on me before, I didn't want to take my chances, despite Alex telling me it was safe.
My entire face was all tingly feeling. You know how it feels. After crying hard, it's all damp and sensitive that you could feel every breeze, and this cool hallway completely made my face feel like it had electricity on it.
Alex didn't go ahead of me like last time. He made sure he was by my side the entire way through. I'd like to think that he was there to support me, and even though that's partially true, it's also just so he could grab me if the floor decided to give out again.
Once we reached the top of the stairs again, we saw the hole that I fell through, and to my surprise, it wasn't as big as I thought it was below. It was half the width of the hallway itself.
"We can easily shimmy across the side of the hole, and reach the end of the hall still." Alex said, moving ahead.
He shimmied slowly by the side of the hole and once he made it to the other side, he stopped and turned to me.
"Alright, your turn." He said, smirking.
"I hope you're right on this…" I said weary.
I felt my anxiety kick up as I started to slowly shimmy past the hole, but I couldn't allow that to screw me over once again. So I took a deep breath, and held it until I made it to the other side.
"See? Told you it'd be easy." He said jokingly.
"Alright alright. I'm still alive. thank the lord." I made a face at him.
"Thank Jesus indeed." He giggled.
We continued down the hall and surprisingly, nothing else gave way to me or Alex. I guess I was just still shook up from falling before.
"Hey look." Alex pointed off to the left.
I shined my flashlight down and saw a small metal incline.
"Say, how are you able to see all of this without my flashlight?" I asked Alex.
"Magic." He laughed.
"Uh huh." I flicked his head again. "Well let's continue on."
We continued onward through the incline and once again, nothing happened to either of us. At this point, I was starting to feel more confident to where we were going, and started walking faster.
"Well look at Ms. I got to be somewhere." Alex teased at me.
"Yeah...far away from this hell, that's where." I chuckled.
Hella far. My thoughts stated, which made me chuckle again.
After a few minutes, we reached the top of the metal incline and we were surprised to see something that we weren't expecting.
Light.
In front of us was a wall blocking our path and what seemed to be two windows on both sides, but past that, we could see a ladder on the far end of the room. That ladder led up through a pipe and we saw light leak through it.
"That's it...I don't believe it. That's sunlight! There's no question!"
Alex started moving around the entryway, looking back at me and through the window.
"If we can get to that pipe, we are home free!" I said, excitedly.
Alex turned to the window and made a fist. He tried to punch the glass to see if it would break. Clearly it didn't. All that happened is that Alex crippled himself for a second.
"You all good?" I asked, trying to be serious, but ended up chuckling.
"Yeah...I am...god that hurt…" Alex whimpered.
As Alex was adjusting his hand, and looking around to see what he could use to break the window, I noticed that there were more of the symbols on the right hand side of the wall.
These ones looked different though...not the glowing ones, or the regular ones from up top...these ones look like they were sticking out..as if they were buttons.
I looked around and discovered another set of symbols, but they were written as opposed to being a button. They were rearranged in a certain order. One symbol, leading to another, leading to another.
It was a code.
"Anne. as much as the wall is intriguing, I could use some help breaking this window.." Alex grunted, trying to pick up a rock, but ultimately failing.
I ignored him and matched each symbol to the one that needed to be pressed. Some of these symbols were high up, but I was able to press it with a jump.
At this point, Alex noticed the code on the wall as well and saw me inputting the code in.
"I see why the wall is interesting now..it's our way through!" He chuckled, as he watched me put in the last button.
After the last button was pressed, the code on the wall started glowing red for a brief second, before dimming down and releasing a rumbling sound.
At first, we thought nothing happened because it took a second, but eventually the wall lifted up in front of us, and up ahead, we saw the pipe. We saw our ticket out of here. Freedom.
"Yes! C'mon Alex, let's get the hell out of here."
We started walking through the room, examining everything we passed by. The ancient scribbling, the moldy rocks, the dusty particles that rose out to the pipe. We were about to make it, and have one hell of a story to say.
That is what I'd love to say, if the next thing that happened didn't suck so much.
When we were halfway through the room, we both heard a clutter from behind us. We thought it was the wall closing again, until we realized the cluttering kept happening. And it was getting closer, and closer.
We both spun around, and simultaneously let out a loud gasp. We started to shake in fear, as we witnessed it get closer and closer. The creature finally found its way out, and it wasn't holding back.
Before I could shine my light on it, the creature ran up to me at incredible speeds and smacked me across the floor. The force of its hand pushing me honestly felt like I was getting hit by a car, and I swear I thought my ribs broke.
Alex saw me sliding near the pipe, gripping my chest in pain. He started running towards me, but before he could even reach halfway, the creature quickly snatched him up once again.
"AAAAH NOO! C'MON WE'RE RIGHT THERE FOR CHRIST SAKE!!"
Alex squirmed as hard as he could, even tried to throw some punches to it, but just like before, he was powerless. There was no way he was gonna be able to escape the grasp.
The creature looked at me with the same red glowing eyes that have been haunting me this entire time, and I honestly thought it was about to finish me off, but screeched instead and turned away from me.
The creature made a new tunnel with a simple punch of its fist, and slowly disappeared into the shadows with Alex.
"ANNE, JUST FORGET ABOUT ME, ESCAPE! GET HELP, AND BRING A WHOLE ARMY WITH YOU!!" Alex screamed
And just like that, Alex and the creature disappeared within the shadows, leaving a shattered person behind.
