The first days of school had been easy, almost boring, if you asked Caiden. It was Friday and the first week of school was over, and there were plenty of time left of the day to do whatever you wanted to. They went straight for the school entry, were he held the door open for her. Pauline gave him a smile as she walked past and he followed her out. The sun was shining when they walked over the school yard and out the gate.
He was happy that he had her here, she always seemed ready to follow him on everything he wanted to do, and he would do the same for her. They had both picked this school, this adventure, and he honestly didn’t think either of them would have gone if the other hadn’t been accepted. But here they were, so far from home. Two Londoners on the other side of the Atlantic.
They found their way down to the subway, were they headed for Times Square. To Caiden it might be one of the most important adventures of the week, but he knew Pauline only came with him on this to be nice. She didn’t care for comic books as he did, she found them kinda silly. He had gone to the art class to ask them for help to find a comic book store, because who else would know how to get there, and gotten the directions from a guy. An old man on the train gave them an angry look, and Caiden could almost bet it was because of their hair colors. Who wouldn’t be angry at Pauline’s amazing pink hair anyway? She always looked nothing but next to perfect.
As the train stopped at the station they both got off and Caiden couldn’t help himself from saying; “Mind the gap”, exactly in the same voice used at London’s subway. He could see Pauline shaking her head at him.
The comic book store wasn’t far from the subway station and they soon found it. Maybe because Pauline was good at following directions, or for the big sign with Spider-Man above the store, Caiden wasn’t sure of which. It didn’t really matter, not to him. He would probably get lost everywhere if it wasn’t for her, but inside of the store was a totally different matter. Even if Caiden had never been to this store before, the fact that he knew what he was looking for seemed to make his eyes sharper. The latest issue of Superman. It wasn’t hard to find the section of DC Comics, and from there he found what he was searching for. His eyes scanned the shelf as there were some older issues he didn’t own already, and couldn’t help himself from looking at them.
“Hey, you said only the new one!” Pauline saw what he was looking at, and knew him too damn well.
“But… I just wanted to see what more they have”, he replied, browsing through the comics.
