Morgane felt a gentle shake on her shoulder as she looked up from her book on the Sumerian language, it was the driver of the tram. “Hey young lady we're here, I think the archaeology director is waiting on you.” Morgane nods her head while her face turns red from embarrassment. She could hear a chuckle from Director Gavin, “so the first day you are legally allowed to be here and you are to absorbed in a book to realize you are here; that is one for the record books.” The others at the Dig Site laugh with him then as she had been sneaking into the Dig Site since she first knew of it's existence as a young child. Eventually they gave up trying to keep her away and started having her do the least important work.
Morgane steps off the tram and says while giving the site the once over, “well at least today you won't have me weighing pot shards.” The Director chuckles again, “no I won't. Today I have a section picked out by all of us for you to work in alone. Think of it as an Adulthood gift.”
Morgane finishes her sweeping overlook of the Dig Site, it looked just like it did every day she had been there. A covered table with liquid refreshments and snack items for anyone who felt they needed either. While there was an encroachment of some wild grasses from long dormant seeds (the biologists loved those samples seems they are from an extinct or unknown type of grass), there was no plant life. Any that attempted to grow was promptly dug up and taken to a special greenhouse to stay quarantined until it was determined what it was. There is currently 4 main dig “holes” that the crew worked out of. As well as a few smaller ones that are generally used to either teach newcomers how to do the work, or to see if there are new things to be discovered. So most of the ground of the Dig Site was a uniform yellowish brown not quite sandy color.
The Director waves Morgane over to a roped off area that was dug into very briefly, then left alone. Gavin speaks, “do you recognize this spot Morgane? It's one of those when you were younger you kept telling everyone there was something important here. Well the short distance we did dig had uncovered the Star of the Sea.” The Star of the Sea? That was the sea green pendant of an unknown gem type the Dig Site had dug up when I was ten. Gavin grinned at the look of shock, “yes you technically made the biggest discovery here Morgane. So we decided once we found that, that you should have the right to keep digging here.”
Morgane bows her head in thanks, the Director waves a hand at her; “no need to be humble my dear. Your generation are going to be something special, we're just glad to be a part of it in some small way; so happy digging.” Then he notes my bag, “oh as I am sure your father packed you a meal I suggest you put it in the refrigeration unit. I will make sure to send someone over to remind you to eat it about midday.” The director chuckles as he walks away to start on his own tasks.
Morgane sets her bag on the ground and rummages in it to remove her lunch and looks up trying to remember where the refrigeration unit was, as she had never used it. It was mostly used to put meals or biological samples in, which might bother some people to do that but it has segments inside it designating between “food” and “samples”. It tended to not bother those working the Dig Site, the 2 segments were completely separated from one another. The only time they were not is when the two separate sections were open, and if a sample were to “infect” anything it would infect everyone then.
Morgane sees the composite metal stone lean-to that all tools were stored inside as well as any other equipment. The “snack table” was near it, so she heads towards it recalling the refrigeration unit was inside it. This “building” (if you wanted to call it that) is a good way to look over how the city builders decided to make the structures of the city. While Morgane knew that on the surface large buildings were made from mostly metal and concrete, what the city builders have done down here has been very interesting indeed. While yes they used metal beams to make a framework to build on, while digging into the shelters for emergencies one of the builders accidentally found a way to make obsidian. The builder in question had broken into an underground lava chamber, and afraid that the lava would destroy their work he broke into a wall to let the ocean flow into the location to quick cool the lava. When they examined the spot later they discovered the lava was turning into obsidian, the city builders spent a couple of days trying to figure out how they managed it and if they could find a way to use it in building; as well as how to change the color of the obsidian.
The builders discovered if they use a special mix of steel they could reinforce the volcanic glass enough to lose some of it's brittle nature and use it as a facing for buildings. Interiors tend to be all cut stone as the whole dome is climate controlled the structures didn't need to be, so it was thought to use as much locally source minerals as possible. Also they wanted the buildings to have less of the chemicals that are found in surface buildings. Most homes had special carving put into their walls for decoration, there was only a handful of carvers though, so it was easy to tell who worked on which house. Some of the main buildings in the city center made a point to use all of the carvers to make the carvings a more group project there.
The lean-to had no carvings on it as it was for utilitarian use, if you are working it would not be helpful to pause to appreciate the beauty of some carvings. Morgane sets her lunch into the refrigeration unit and steps back out of the lean-to and her eyes fall onto a box sitting on the “snack table”. It had a sticker on it saying “For Morgane from the dig crew”, she looks around and everyone appeared to be busy. So she opened it, inside was a hand forged hand sized pick and a hand made brush. “yer ma told us that she and your da gotcha a trowel and gloves so this should finish off the set of tools for ya.” A grizzled voice said to her, as she turned and responded, “why thank you Seamus. I imagine the Smiths were amused they had to make a full set of tool over two sets of gift givers.” Seamus gives Morgane a big grin, “ya right they were; even more so when they found out who they were for. Might be they is planning a gift for ya as well young-un, you should go see them this evenin.” Morgane nods her head in agreement, wow the Smiths want to give me a gift as well? I had heard they had been busy the last two weeks, maybe all the “now adult” children are getting gifts from them.
Morgane walked back over to her marker out dig spot looking it over carefully, trying to decide where to start working. She spies a spot in the northern quadrant of her roped off area and decided that would be a good location to start working. Some might say the work of an archaeologist is boring, digging in the ground at a slow careful rate so as to not damage anything you might find in the layers of sediment; Morgane loved it though. The concept of discovering things that happened a multitude of years ago was thrilling to her, like Triton finding a new book that he hadn't seen before. Morgane spent the morning happily digging (carefully) in the dirt, she has found a number of pot shard that she works on when Seamus taps lightly on her shoulder. “If'n you don't want ye da getting angry at ye, I'd go get a bit of food in ye.” Seamus said to Morgane, she remembered Gavin said he's send someone over to remind her to eat. Seamus glances at her water bottle, “an if I was you; which I ain't. Ye probably should drink a bit more water young-un I was watching ye.” Morgane looked sheepish, yes she had forgot to drink any water; but she knew it was wrong to forget to take care of herself.
