Morgane sets her tools down near where she was working and takes a drink of water recalling what Seamus said to her. Then walks over to retrieve her lunch from the refrigeration unit. She went out and sat on a ridge near the 'snack table' and opened up the lunch her father had sent with her. It did have the proffered tuna steak sandwich, with one of her mother's great sauces on it and a few sprigs of cilantro for crispness and bite. There was also a few acorn flour shortbread cookies, well at least dad didn't over do it on the food this time.
Morgane recalls a lunch he had made her for school once, it contained a couple maui maui fillets lightly breaded half a sweet melon, as well as half a cucumber and a few carrots, and she had only been seven at the time. So it had been enough for her and Triton at the time plus a few other kids as well, though knowing her father that could have been the intent.
Morgane looked over the site as she ate her meal in a relaxed fashion, it looked like most of the crew was working in the main hole in the ground. She thought Gavin was hoping to find a building eventually, which would help more in understanding what kind of civilization lived here. While they have seen what appeared to be formations that implied walls, they hadn't “dug up” one as yet, Morgane wondered if maybe they were approaching it in the wrong way. Glancing at the lean-to she pondered a moment, and then called Gavin over as she finished her last bite of her sandwich. Gavin walks over eyeing what remained of the shortbread, Morgan chuckles and hands him one. “Something you needed Morgane?” Gavin asked her while nibbling on the cookie, Morgane pointed at the lean-to and responded. “The walls that have been dug out have we tested the mineral composition of them? What if it's a different type of construction materiel than what we are using, or even that the surfacers use?” Gavin thinks a minute while chewing the cookie then calls over a shortish man, “hey Yu. Did we ever send bits from the 'walls' for a spectrum analysis?” The man named Yu, I believe he's an expert on ancient Asian societies; answers Gavin. “I don't think so Director, we never gave it a thought; though it might be a good idea. Did Morgane have an idea?” Gavin grins and answers Yu, “well seems she was thinking on how we build down here and wondered if the buildings we were looking for were as well. Or at least something similar,” he winks at Morgane.
Yu looks a Morgane a moment then turns and says something in fast Mandarin, she wished she had learned it with Triton. Gavin sees the look on Morgane's face, “wishing you had learned Mandarin now? Don't worry he's just telling people to go get samples off one of the walls we haven't tried to work on yet.”
Morgane feels better hearing that, Gavin claps her on the back. “Good thinking young-un, we should have thought of it. It's always good to have different eyes on a subject when you get stuck on it.” Morgane watches as four people pick up collection jars and head over to a “hump” in the ground, two of the people take out their trowels and scrape the surface of the '”hump”. The other two take out their picks and hammer into the “hump” to acquire an internal sample.
Morgane wandered over to the “hump” to examine it herself as she was never allowed near them as a child in case she shattered them. She looked carefully at the materiel the worn down wall was made out of, it did kind of look like glass, but something else. Almost like something was fused together, she shrugs at it not knowing much about metallurgy.
Morgane heads back over to the area she was working on, looking the pot shards she was carefully uncovering again. They didn't quite look like a clay pot, and they were too brittle to be carved stone; maybe it was an amalgam of clay and a glass. That would explain the brittleness and the textural difference, she reaches over to her bag and pulls out a collection jar and gently picks up a small shard and places it in the jar then writes on the label. 'pot shard location hole #5 northwest of main dig'
Morgane picks it up and walks over to Gavin who was placing the collection jars from the wall into a transport box for when the tram returned in a few hours, he looks up at her. “So what now Morgane? Have another idea you'd like to tell me?” Morgane holds up her jar, “yes. This is one of the pot shards, as I didn't know if you had any of them analyzed yet; I set up a sample.” Gavin takes the jar out of Morgane's hand looking over the label to see if she put the right information on it. “Well actually we have to an extent, most of the data comes back inconclusive, however the scans I am sending the wall bits off to have will be different so it may be a good idea to send one of these too.” Gavin sets the jar in with the others then glances at his watch, “when do you have your work out time at the arena? Do I need to let you go before the tram arrives?” Morgane shakes her head at him, “no the tram will be fine. I have my workout in the early evening, hopefully they can come up with someone who can spar with me.” Gavin chuckles at Morgane's comment as if not believing it was possible, then he waves her back to her work area.
Morgane returns to her workspace and settles in working over the five large pot shards she had uncovered, she was hoping they were from the same pot; and that it had broke where it is now sitting. Instead of this spot possibly being a midden pile, which you never know until you uncover enough to discover what the location was actually meant for.
An hour later Morgane had extracted one of the large pot shards, and gently brushed it off looking at the etched design on it's outer face. It looked like some kind of humanoids dancing, she used 'humanoids' because they appeared to have (suggested) long ears and some kind of tail. However they were bipedal and appeared to be proportionally like humans, they just had long ears and tails; granted due to the placement the 'tails' could be sword scabbards. She carefully gets up still holding it and walks over to Yu, he notices her approaching and sets down the clipboard he was looking over.
Yu glances toward the shard she's carrying, “got something of interest there? If so what is your opinion of it?” Yu asks of her with what appears to be slight amusement on his face, Morgane tilts her head in a questioning way. “I am guessing you have seen images etched into at least some of the pot shards we have come across? This one has humanoids dancing, I say humanoids because they have long ears and what is either sword scabbards or tails.” Yu takes the shard and looks it over then pulls out a sheet of paper and notes Morgane's observations on it and comments. “Yes we have seen some similar images, however; we do not always see the 'tails' in the imagery. I think that however is due to the fact the images don't always show a profile.” Yu points at one of the figures, “I think you didn't see this one; see the figure is positioned so you can't see what ever that 'tail' is.” Morgane looks closer at the figure and notices Yu was right there was a figure on it that was facing toward the viewer, with no profile. While you could still see the large ears you could not see if it has a 'tail' or not.
Yu speaks again, “nice idea that it might be a sword scabbard; that is a possibility we didn't think of. Which is funny as unlike the surfacers we use melee weapons in day to day life, so we should have thought of it.” He then eyes Morgane's waist, “let me guess young one the trainers think you're too good a swords person to carry one outside of the arena?” Morgane self consciously pats her hip where her sword belt should be then nods her head in agreement. Yu chuckles, “ask them to issue you a Bokken for daily use; it should be safe enough even if you are an expert. Why trainers think an expert doesn't know when it's appropriate when to use all skill is silly.” He shakes his head waving her off and keeping the shard to enter it into the log.
Morgane stops at the lean-to on the way back to her work area for a tarp to cover her work, while there wasn't wind per se; air is circulated a bit by large fans. So it is best to keep the work from being recovered by sediment, she still had a couple of hours of work left; so this way she was prepared. Morgane manages to remove another large shard and discovers a small pile of what appear to be seeds, maybe they were being stored in the pot. She carefully placed the whole pile of seeds into a large collection jar and wrote down where she found them on the label, and looks at the second piece she removed from the sedimentary bed.
This one also had an etched image on it, that could be from the same pot as the previous one, people with long ears and possible tails. They were dancing again it looked like they were holding platters (maybe) that could be seeds. So it's possible the pots are for storing seeds in them. Morgane writes down her thoughts in a field notebook, she'll leave it with the items she uncovered today when she leaves.
She notices it was getting close to the time the tram would return and started cleaning up her work space. Picking up her brand new tools and wrapping them in some oiled cloth after wiping them down, she sets them in her pack. She takes and places the collection jar and pot shard into a carry basket and moves the basket as well as her pack out of the way as she unravels the tarp to cover the place she is working in. Then picks up both her pack and the carry basket and walks over to when she talked with Yu previously.
Most of the site workers were dropping off their finds at the table and Yu was marking them off on a sheet of paper. When Morgane comes up with her basket Yu's eyebrows go up, “so found something young one?” Morgane nods her head, “yes I believe it's a batch of seeds and I also believe;” handing over the field notebook. “That the pot surrounding them may have stored them as this shard has some interesting images on them that I have noted my thoughts on in the notebook.” Yu nods and takes the basket and notebook from Morgane and writes down the information, “let the trainers know it would be good to have you late here once every seven or so days so you can learn the site closing process.” Morgane nods, “and don't forget to ask them about the Bokken.” Yu reminded her as he waved her to the spot everyone was waiting for the tram at.
The tram arrives and Morgane notices that Triton is on it, “hey there; I couldn't resist coming to pick you up.” Triton says as she gets on, and he hands her sword still wrapped because the trainers worry she'd over do it. She needs to remember what Yu said, “hey Triton I see you there. I told your lady friend to ask the trainers for a Bokken for daily use, make sure she does.” Well I guess I don't need to remember now that Yu told Triton as well. She thought to herself after Yu shouted toward them, Triton thinks for a moment and then responds to Yu in Mandarin. Triton then looks at Morgane, “I should have thought of that myself Morgane. The trainers shouldn't have a complaint about that, granted you could kill someone with it; but you aren't likely to be able to without intending to. Your sword however could cut paper by looking at it cross eyed.”
Triton was right it could, which is why it stayed wrapped up unless she was at the arena with it; it wasn't permitted to stay at the arena because a child might accidentally pick it up. Triton takes her bag from her, “also since I was told it was best to visit the Smiths before going to our workout I thought it best to meet you with your sword so we didn't need to waste time.” Morgane sits next to Triton as the tram heads back into the main Dome, “guess we will be eating when our work out is done; will it be in time for the set meal?” Morgane asked Triton, he takes out a mini notebook and flips a few pages before answering; “nope looks like we cook our own. Good thing I shopped before I went to the library, so we can make something.”
Morgane hoped that there had been some venison at the market, for land bound meat it was her favorite; and sometimes the game keepers take a couple of them down to control the population. “Before you go wishing I found some pieces of venison at the market as well as some of the acorn tortillas you like as well as the fixings to make some fajitas. I also made sure to pick up some of the sea berries and some cream so we can have a fun dessert.” Morgane was surprised when Triton said all that, then he continued. “Don't look so surprised, your father made a point to make sure I knew your favorite foods so I could pick them up when I go to the market. Which by the way is something I have to do for the library every morning now to check the used seller stalls.”
Ah, used seller stalls; places where people got rid of things they brought from the surface that they decided they no longer wanted/needed. Morgane chuckles, “so does this mean I can get you to shop all the time?” Triton pats her on the shoulder laughing with her, “sure I know how much you hate shopping.” Which she did, she had watched a few “tv shows” as a teen about surfacer children and she couldn't understand the fascination with going to a store to buy things you did not need.
“Did you hear a 'tourist group' showed up yesterday morning?” Morgane heard a person comment making her curious as the surfacers rarely come to the Domes at all anymore. It was hard to believe Carmen was here, but a group of tourists? Most of the dwellers of the city never use the word 'tourist' as there isn't a tourist trade in Oceana, as it's not easy on surface people to go down to the depths of the ocean.
The person who spoke continued, “it seems this young man and his group of friends heard about our swords woman and wants to challenge her.” Morgane feels like she got hit in the face with a board, and when she looks towards the voice that was talking everyone is staring at her; she feels decidedly uncomfortable. “So the videos the city council made to show how our society worked apparently has an effect. I was curious as to why they took extra videos of me training and fighting.”
Well, Morgane thought to herself; you wanted a workout. Lets hope this man isn't an idiot and knows what he is doing or it could be dangerous. Triton looks worried and pats Morgane on the back, “maybe you should use the Bokken to fight him. It would probably make it a semi fair fight then,” he says attempting humor. Morgane shrugs and gets lost in thought as they continue towards the city center.
