The City of Oceana

The Arena Part 1

The Arena Part 1

May 24, 2020

Morgane and Triton get off the tram at the Smith's workshop just outside the Arena, Morgane feeling nervous due to the potential challenge that awaited her in the Arena. The Smith's workshop was an open air pair of forges, totally handcrafted in Oceana; the metals were also all sourced locally. Each forge was in length fifteen foot long and about 4 foot across, as they had to be able to accommodate large pieces of metal inside the extremely hot fires. Each workshop also contained about 5 anvils a piece, each shaped a little different some a different size. There was a pile of both locally source wood from some of the farms and trimming from the 'wild areas' as well as a good sized pile of coal, though as well there was a small pile of dried bones; ones that the people who crafted things from dried bones wouldn't use for whatever reason.

The Smith's had at least one person always working the forges, one of the forges was also always lit up. Now which one was pulling an 'all nighter' varied because you did have to clean out the rubbish from the forges every now and again. Morgane remembered from her stint working the forges that the reason for the mixed fuels was that sometimes it was much easier to build the fires from an easier to burn fuel and the progress to a harder to burn one, and burning bone is hotter than a person would think.

Various sized tongs, again all hand crafted; hung from hooks hanging off of metal beams that were created in the large smelting works in the industrial area. The anvils had been created there as well, the Smiths had themselves made the molds that were needed themselves. Which of course the written down drawings of were stored in the Library.

Along one of the purely stone (the Smiths had scoffed at the idea of having any kind of 'glass' on the workshops)walls, was a wooden rack that stored various sized hammers for working the hot metals. There was also a rack of what could be perceived as wood worker's tools but made more sturdier for more fine detail work. There was thirteen foot long stone troughs, three each in each workshop; for doing what is called 'quenching' the metal when work is complete. Not far behind those is a pile of tossed random bits of metal that will eventually be remelted down into a base, after failing to be quenched properly. Outside the workshops there was a storage location for the completed goods, Morgane mused over that a moment; bet if my 'challenger' came by here they were surprised nothing was locked up.

A rather well muscled young man came out of the semi-dim back of the workshop, you can't have standard lighting in those workshops so all work is done by candle and forge flame. Destin spies the two of them, “hey it's about time you two got here. My da and my uncle will both be annoyed they didn't give you your gifts, give me a moment to go get them. We had to hide yours Morgane because of that lack-wit tourist who came here thought he could buy it from us.” Now Morgane was very curious about the 'gift' the Smiths had crafted for her, Destin went back into the semi dark rear of the workshop and rummaging could be heard.

“That brainless cretin thought because they are Smiths that anything could be bought if you gave the right price. It was funny when da told him that he wasn't on the surface anymore so he should stop thinking he could buy whatever he wanted, and to learn that things are not the same way down here.” Morgane and Triton chuckled at that, Destin's father was not soft spoken if you did something inane; being a smith doing something stupid meant you could die. So it was best to counter anything stupid before it bit you.

Destin comes back into the light of the forge with two items wrapped in oiled cloth intentionally padded so they both appear the same size. Destin hands one to Triton, and waits for him to unwrap it. Triton does so and gives a whistle; it was a Scottish Claymore. The segment above the main guard was hand tooled leather for a good grip when necessary, there was Celtic chevrons worked into the leather; no doubt Triton's mother had a hand in that. Triton also pulls out of the wrapped bundle a long sword version of it, obviously meant for daily use. Destin pats his own hip where a very lovely hand ax was resting, “I have no idea when my da and uncle made me ax; but I saw the work they did on those claymore's as well as.” Destin hand's Morgane the second wrapped item, “your beautiful piece Morgane; they really surprised me with it. They also got to teach me a new process while doing it, granted I wasn't permitted to work on yours.”

Morgane quickly unwrapped hers and her jaw fell, beautiful wasn't the word for it as she looked over the folded metal rapier. “Destin I didn't know you could make a rapier out of Damascus steel, I would have guess ed it would be to brittle.” Morgane exclaimed examining the blade, Destin chuckles in response. “Yeah I said the same thing and me da said 'watch me' and there ya go, though I reckon you look over your pommel; it may surprise you.”

Morgane carefully unwraps the rest of the weapon and the oiled cloth falls from her hand, “but; how?” She asks stunned as she sees a small version of the Star of the Sea attached to the pommel of the rapier, then she notices that the basket covering the guard was made from platinum. A deeper voice comments, “I thought that might get yer attention lass. They found a vein of that gemstone when digging the shelters, but thought it was a new type of emerald; until they dug up that their pendant that the dig crew dun found thanks to ye. The jewelers thought it only fair that ye get one of the first cut ones, and as you don't care fer sparklies sticking it on that there pommel works fine. Oh and ye might want to thank me wife for the basket on that, she spent a week constructing it for ye.” Destin's father John (yes John Smith, according to the Smiths they were new people down here so new names and they themselves weren't very imaginative) came up behind Morgane.

Morgane slowly turns around still examining the basket of the rapier and holding it so it won't cut anyone, like the leather work on Triton's two handed claymore there were Celtic Chevrons in the 'weave' of the platinum. John continues, “that there lassy is my Masterwork; I am very proud of the work I did on it.” Morgane almost dropped the rapier when she heard that, “your Masterwork? Then you should keep it to display.” John waves his hand and replies, “no it shouldn't a weapon is meant to be used. It is a tool, an extension of it's wielder; no matter how finely crafted it is it is meant to be used. You lass are the best swords person here, so it was designed with you in mind.” John then chuckles and continues, “and now me brother has to craft his so he can catch up to me; which I will find very amusing.”

Morgane bows to John resigned, as he made a good argument; she then says. “Please tell Jane my thanks then, as I am unsure as to when I would get a chance to do so myself.” John nods then gets a serious look on his face, “lass; you be careful that feller what come here to challenge ye isn't very bright. Thought he could buy that off of me, and almost threatened to have the surfacer's UN sanction us because I wouldn't sell it to him. That boy is dumb, and dumb can be unpredictable; so watch yer back around him.”

Morgane nodded in agreement thinking, this guy sounds like he's use to getting his way; I might have to out think him before I fight him. Great I have to have two bouts with him, one mental and one physical. Triton speaks up after handing over his old sword to Destin and strapping the long sword to his belt. “So you think he might be here more for making trouble than an actual challenge?” John nods slowly in response to Triton who continues, “alright then. Morgane I need to be with you every time you talk to whoever this person is, I know more about laws than you do; lets go and get this over with.” Morgane nods and John speaks again, “now lass I got the trainers to agree to get ye wear that pretty thing provided you put a leather binding on it to show you won't draw it.” Morgane was surprised by this as she handed her old rapier to Destin and then strapped it onto her belt then tied the leather thong to it.
