"Nice building," I said as I scanned my surrounding, "Except the dead parrot over there."
"It's a rat," the man frowned, "And those aren't wings."
"Anywayyy, ahem, I never got your name, by the way. I'm Fard. Assistant Sub-Inspector Fardeen Khan, at your service."
"My name's Jay, but my friends call me J."
"Do they though, buddy?"
Jay took me up to the second floor, where his apartment was. From up there, he showed me the building's parking area, which was where Dru the Azerbaijani guinea pig had parked his SUV on his first day.
"I noticed the car near the bank the very next day," Jay explained. "It's got no number and it had been standing for days on public space, so I was concerned. I clicked some pics of the car multiple times and sent it to the police, but they just replied with shit like 'Thanks for the photographs, we are looking into it', or 'Received, thank you'. I also tried talking to the building's owner about Dru and his car but he just won't listen."
"What's Dru's actual name?" I asked.
"Dhruv. Dhruv Tiwari."
"And this building's owner? What d'you know about him?"
"Yeah, he's a sad old wreck named Jatin Malhotra, he lives right below me, on the first floor right in front of Dru's place."
"Okay, and what exactly does he say when you talk about Dru?"
"He would get really uncomfortable and say it's none of my business. That's true, by the way, but I'm a responsible citizen and I care about this town. Dru is definitely a bank robber and Mumbai can live without him."
"That's amazing, Jay. You're very brave to-"
"Also I'm like really scared, man. I need to protect my wife, dude, she's pregnant again."
Jay took me into his apartment. It was very nicely decorated with vases and photos and stuff. There was also a painting of Mona Lisa which was photoshopped with another woman's face, who I guessed must be Jay's wife.
"I like your apartment, Jay," I said.
"Thanks, Fard. It's not always like this though. My wife is out of town with my daughter today."
"All units be advised, we have a 10-32 in progress, at uh... 367, Marine Drive. All nearby officers please respond."
"Hey your walkie-talkie thing is saying something," Jay said. "Are you gonna go?"
"I'm not leaving this case, Jay, don't worry."
"So what d'you think is going on?"
"Well what I think, is... Dru is planning to rob the bank. SUV is the getaway. The building's owner Mr. Malhotra was likely promised a cut to keep his mouth shut... But why is the police not doing anything about the pictures you sent? I don't understand..."
"Maybe they're just being lazy?"
"Maybe."
"So are we not going to Dru's house to interrogate him about the car?"
"No. We don't want them to think the police is onto them. I have a different plan, I think."
"Which is?"
"I'm gonna get that SUV towed and I'm gonna see what happens," I smirked. "MUA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAA!!!"
