"Sir?" I said as I opened the door to his office. "May I come in?"
"ASI Fardeen Khan," he took off his glasses and looked at me. "Yes, please do come in."
Senior Inspector Dalbir Sukhwant Singh, or Captain Singh, has been on the police force for 22 years. He's tough, he has dark grey hair, a scary moustache, and a pair of grandpa eyes. He's like a war movie army general who's wrong but he thinks he's right so he gives his men shit orders but they do not comply and sacrifice themselves to save the universe. Anyway, he's our station house officer. The guy with the Airpods.
"Thank you, sir," I came inside, closed the door behind me and sat down. "I wanted to talk to you about a case I picked up while on patrol duty."
"Oh, that is great, Detective. It's your first case, must be exciting, how is it going?"
"It's great, sir. In fact the man who reported the situation to me is filing the information report outside as we speak."
"Yes I did see you with another gentleman talking to Constable Sharma a few minutes ago. Sounds like things are going quite well. Is there anything I can help you with regarding this case?"
"As a matter of fact, yes sir. I have been observing the activities of our targets for some time, and I require a search warrant on a Mr. Dhruv Tiwari and a Mr. Jatin Malhotra."
"Dhruv Tiwari?"
"Yes sir, that's his name."
And then Captain Singh stared at my face for like five seconds with his mouth open. Did I say anything wrong?
"Fair enough," Captain Singh put his glasses back on. "Let the reports get filed, and then you can tell me where he is, so we can go and search his apartment."
"You're coming too, Inspector?"
"Of course, anything to help," he smiled. "It's your first case, I'd love to accompany you, and assist wherever possible. Let me know when you're ready to go."
"Thank you, sir," I stood up. "I'll be right back as soon the reports are ready."
I walked out of Captain Singh's office and saw Amit talking to Jay near my desk.
"Hey," Amit fist-bumped me, "How did it go in there?"
"Amit, can you do me a favour?" I asked. "I need to find out who's assigned parking duty for today."
"Alright sure, that's not a problem. Let's go to my desk."
"Hey, what did the S.H.O. say, Fard?" Jay asked as we walked. "Did you get the warrant?"
"I think so," I shrugged, "But he said he'll be accompanying me during the search."
"What? Why?"
"I don't know, Jay. I'm trying to figure that out myself."
"I think he just wants to mentor you," Amit suggested. "Y'know, show you how it's done!"
"I doubt that," I said. "I think I'll just roll with it."
"Here we are!" Amit turned on his computer. "Let's find out today's parking duty guy."
"Let's do," I sat down next to Amit in front of his computer.
"Okayy..." Amit said as he opened up the personnel database. "Today... Parking duty was assigned to..."
Dramatic pause.
"...Nobody."
"What?!" I exclaimed. "Why's no-one on duty today? Worli needs at least two officers on parking duty at a time."
"In fact, Fard," Amit opened up some new tables and started scanning them. "Nobody has been assigned parking duty for four days straight."
"Where have I heard 'four days' before," Jay said.
"Something's wrong, guys," I stood up. "Something is very wrong."
"Should we talk to the S.H.O.?" Amit asked as he shut down the system.
"No, don't say anything to Singh," I said, "Not before I get some more things figured out."
"ASI Khan?" I heard Captain Singh say from his office.
I turned to find him outside his room at the door, "Yes, Inspector?"
"Are we ready to go?" he asked.
"Yes we are, sir," I replied. "I'll get a car ready for us."
"Okay, I'll be with you in a minute."
"Very good, sir."
