Surviving till dawn

Chapter 8 (Nyo’s POV)

Chapter 8 (Nyo’s POV)

Jun 01, 2020

After collecting all the useful items from the corpses we headed back to the camp. “We’re back!” shouted Semion. “Finally, we were getting worried because it was taking so long,” Katelyn said. “Yea, we were ambushed by a group of beasts.” “What!? Are any of you injured? Ukia come here!” “Coming! What’s going on?” “They were ambushed. So who has the worst injuries?” Semion raised his hand and went with Ukia to sit down at the cave entrance.

Suddenly there was a bright greenish light and I could sense the mana in the air starting to gather at that point. Magic? Healing magic to be precise. I didn’t think anyone other then Katelyn was able to use magic. I looked over at Dayxo with a questioning gaze. As if feeling my stare he turned around to look at me. “Ah you must be pretty confused right now.” I nodded. “Well Ukia is one of the few people able to use healing magic. Now you’re probably wondering why we didn’t heal you right? For some strange reason she’s only able to heal an injury if it’s not older than a day. Yours were clearly older so she wasn’t able to help.” “I see. But I thought only fairies were able to use healing magic.” “

He looked at me bewildered. Shoot I said to much. “Where did you hear that, how could someone living in this forest for years know about the other races?” I gulped, quickly think of something. “Ah, uhhmm…that’s because…I once met a wandering merchant who had accidentally stumbled of the road and ended up near our village. He stayed for a few days and told us all sort of stories.” Was that believable? He came a bit closer and whispered in my ear. “I know you have a lot of secrets and you don’t want to tell us yet. That’s totally fine, we’re not going to pry. Just know that you can tell us anything okay?” I stared at him for a bit before we got interrupted by a huff from Katelyn.

I pulled away blushing a bit. “Stop flirting and get your asses over to Ukia.” “We weren’t-” Dayxo began, but was again interrupted by Katelyn. “Sure you weren’t, now hurry up.” He nodded and headed over to where Ukia was still seated near the entrance. Katelyn gave me a knowing look as she walked over to the items we gathered. What. Just. Happened.

After Dayxo was done it was my turn to get patched up. There was one problem though. The injuries I gave myself had mostly already healed, because of my superior healing abilities. One of the few quirks of being half demon I guess. Although when they’re to bad my body just shuts down, which is quite dangerous when you’re in the middle of a battle. It also takes up a fair amount of mana, although normally that’s not really a problem. Sadly although I have quite fair amount of mana I’m unable to use it well, because I’ve never received any training.

“Oh you don’t have a lot of injuries,” Ukia said. “Yea I didn’t have to fight many, so I was pretty lucky I guess,” I answered. I heard Raok huff and mumble under his breath: “That’s because the only thing you can do is run away.” No one else seemed to hear what he said. I’ll just ignore him I guess. It’s better to stay low anyway. “There all done.” “Thank you Ukia.” “No problem,” she smiled. A fairy huh. Haven’t seen one in a while.

It was slowly getting darker and darker. We all gathered around the campfire and ate our meal. It was strangely quiet and I could feel eyes staring at me. I looked around the circle. It looked like they wanted to say something but were keeping it in. Oh right I’m supposed to decide whether I leave or not tonight. After finishing my food I put down my bowl and looked at Dayxo. “Have you decided?” he asked. “Yes…It’ll take you guys at least a week to get out of the forest, so I’ll stay with you until then. I can’t go with you any further because I still have to look for my companion.”

“What if we find your companion within this week?” Ukia asked. “Then I’ll ask him what he thinks.” “Hmm, alright. If you do decide to stay with us after this week, we would be more than happy to have you join our team.” Dayxo said. I smiled at them. “So why were you guys in this forest anyway? Normally people only stay on the outskirts.” I asked them. “Ah, well we got a very special request from the guild to gather certain items for a special potion. Most of the ingredients can be found in this forest so that’s why we’re here.” “Aha.”

We all talked late into the night, until everyone was tired and went to sleep. I took the first watch. Tomorrow I’ll leave this place with them. Maybe I should leave a message for Fenir in case he follows my scent all the way back here. Yeah I’ll do that, hopefully I find him soon.
