The Only Thing I Did Wrong

Jason

Jason

Jun 06, 2020

The next day I went out to go meet Jason. He was two years older than me and Vanessa; best thing about him is that he cares deeply for Vanessa a lot more after their parent’s disown Her. He was the only one who kept in touch with her and always keep up with our family. He would come visit at times and adores our children. Its going to be hard to get him to my side, but I hope he thinks the same way as I do.

We were meeting at his house; he was still a bachelor at his age and quite enjoys it. “Hey David, you’re here early,” He said answering his door. “Come in” he said with bed hair and obviously hungover. His house was a mess but that was a norm at his place since he often throws parties. He always had a way with the ladies, and it just seems to had gotten more intense with the influx of Kpop fans around the world. No wonder he doesn’t mind the bachelor life, still I do hope he settle down one day.

Making my way to the living I answer “Yes, I had something I needed to tell you and wanted your opinion.” He was in the kitchen looking for a water cup and replies “Important enough to come by in person on a weekday?”

I sat down on his couch and said “Yes.” He motions if I wanted any water and asked, “Well what’s up?” I shake my head feeling the guilt in my chest and the bead of sweat rolling down my head and answered, “You see I’m having an affair.”

He almost spitted out his water, slamming the cup down shattering it everywhere and rushed me “You’re doing what now?”

Trying to get him off me, I reply “I said I am having an affair.” He punched me squared in my face and proceed to say, “I told you David to never hurt my little sis, now it seems like I have to keep my end of the bargain!”

I land on my ass while I started to laugh hysterically. “What so damn funny,” he questioned angrily grabbing my collar again raising me to my feet. “I hope you can keep this up, because I will need you to do your part soon.” I snickered removing his hands off me and sitting back down on the couch.

Confused he remark “What are you saying. Did that punch knock your brain out?” I sat there gleefully answering “Nope not at all. My mind is as clear as the sky today. I have something else that is very important to tell you and you must promise to do what you just did to me if I told you. Can you do that?”

Angrily he grabs my shirt collar again and dragged me up onto my feet once again. “What are you blabbering about?” I looked him straight in the eyes finally letting it out “I’m dying. Or better yet I am going to die soon.”

Clenching tighter onto my shirt he questions “What are you talking about?” Removing his hands from my shirt collar I sat down and replies “I am dying…” taking a second to take a deep breathe, “I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.” He angrily yells out “Stop lying this instant David, you look fine.”

“I AM NOT GOD DAMN FINE OR LYING,” I screamed at the tops of my lungs with tears streaming down my cheeks “You think I want to lie about this. You think I would ever truly cheat on your sister who I can barely live without. You truly believe that if I had another choice, I would pick what I am doing now.”

Jason who was had a feeling of wavering slowly sat down on the couch. He and I did not say anything again we just sat in silence. He hesitantly questions “How long do you have left?” Taking a deep sigh, I replied “Maybe less than a half year… depending on the cancer.”

“Isn’t surgery an option?” He said looking to the ground not able to look me in the eyes. I just shook my head and answer “Not anymore.”

“Chemo?” he softly said. I sigh again and said “probably just keep me alive a tad longer.”

Fidgeting his fingers, he remarks “Isn’t there any way out of this?” Laying back on the couch I answer, “From what I know probably not at this moment.”

He slams his fist on the coffee table and yells out “DAMN IT ALL. Why you of all people?” Patting him on the back I replied “I don’t know either. But are you willing to help me in my final wish?” He was silent for a moment before answering “…. what do you want me to do?” Glad that he was willing to help I smile and said “Perfect, I want you to punch me just like how you did earlier when you hear the news of me cheating on Vanessa when she finds out.”

Confuse still he reply, “What why?” I was silent for a bit just trying to keep my emotion in check, “Because I need her to become stronger. I want her to become more independent from me. We been together so long that I think we both can’t truly live apart from each other and she finds me cheating on her will make her rethink her life and be able to live without me.”

He gave me a weak angry look “That’s cruel man.” I had a weak expression and reply “I know it is, but it’s something she needs to go through. Because how will she survive with me dying if she can’t survive me cheating on her. I want her to curse my name, I want her to hate me, dread me, and worst of all I want her to wish for my death. Only then will she be able to live on without me when I truly pass on.”

He once again looks away and said nothing. I pat him again and said “There is still so much I wish I could do, but with a time ticking right now I don’t have much choice. If I could live with her till, we are gray and old I would. Still this is the only life I got right now and I don’t want her to live this life dreading over mine.”

“…..” speechless, he sat there racking his brain over everything.

I slowly said with confidence “I know this is hard to swallow, but I need you to be stronger and help me. I know this is extremely selfish but this is all I can do right now.” He was contemplating all of this before finally saying a low “…ok...” I instantly lighted up and reply “Great, because we have another hurdle to get through.”

“And what is that?” he questions. I said with a bit of a devilish smile “We need to get your parents to forgive Vanessa and be involve in her life again.”

He instantly looks at me with a shock expression and states “Tsk, you’re delusional. Maybe you’ll get my mother but my dad is to stubborn to move an inch from any decision he made.”

I gave him a thumb up and answer “Don’t worry I’ll do anything to get them to do so.”

Scratching his head, he shook his head “Well best of luck to you then.”
