They sat in silence waiting for Pride to arrive. Rose looked inquisitively between the two. Knowing something had changed in the split second that passed. She tugged on her gloves as she sat in anxious silence. Her eyes stilled and stared at the ground.
The sound of a boot hitting the ground echoed through the room. Pride stepped out of the portal. The abyss of black swirled to a close behind her. The sigil fizzling out. “What do you… want?” Pride’s voice pittered out as she noticed Envy. Her gaze shot towards Wrath. Glaring down at her.
“She caught me,” Wrath said curtly. Looking at the wall.
“Can you do anything right? Anything at all?” Pride groaned in annoyance. Pinching the bridge on her nose.
Wrath closed her eyes. Get mad. Get mad. Get mad. She repeated in her mind. She opened them again. “Maybe you tell me what the fuck we are doing then I’ll actually give a shit and put in effort!” Wrath yelled. She slammed her hand on the table. She enveloped her face in rage. “Envy said she’ll give us what we need. All you have to do is tell her what the hell you are planning!” She slid herself back down into the chair. Leaning back and staring daggers into Pride.
“I can’t trust you with anything.” Wrath worked hard to contain her joy at this phrase. Pride sighed. She pulled out a chair and flopped into it. Pride looked between the three of them. “Let me explain what I’m doing to you idiots. Since I clearly cannot trust you to do anything on your own.” Pride stared at Wrath in subdued annoyance.
“What the actual fuck Pride!” After Pride’s explanation Wrath began pacing around the room. Envy stared down at the table with a somber look. Folding her hands in her lap. Pride tapped the table in annoyance. “You started working for the angels!”
“I had no choice,” Pride hissed.
“You think Lucifer is going to care about that,” Wrath snapped. She sank down on the floor. Her face in her hands. Pride observed her human looking at her concerned. Wrath grew quite. Her voice hushed in fear. “What do you think Lucifer will do to us if he finds out?” She turned towards Pride. Anxiously searching her face for answers. Pleading without words for something… anything!
“Well, it’s too late for any of us to turn back now.” Pride leaned back into the chair. The pain in her head was returning. The three of the starred in brief shock at her statement before being once again overcome with despair. Thousands of thoughts ran through Rose’s head. She knew she would end up in Hell eventually because of her deal. She tugged lightly on her gloves under the table. Fearful of what the devil might do to her for aiding the angels. Most of the ones that did weren’t destined to end up down below.
Envy looked up. Her face was much more reserved than usual. Red locks following down her grim face. “How did you end up in Heaven?”
Pride sighed as she ran her hand through her grey locks. Her eyes sharpened as she stared with annoyance at the table. “Vanity.” Wrath and Envy looked shocked. Rose began walking around her apartment. Fiddling with objects to try and release the anxiety she was feeling.
“This is about what you did to her, isn’t it?” Envy sighed. Her body became rigid in the chair.
“What do you mean by that?” Pride observed Envy. A rush of anxiety came over here. “Is there something else other than sending me to die. What is Vanity doing?”
“She’s been making moves in Hell with your absence. Nothing out in the open. However, she is bugging our palaces with listening devices.” Envy slowly relaxed. Their conversation seemed to interest Rose as she sat back down. Envy sighed. “If she was brazen enough to send you to Heaven though I fear what she might be doing that I didn’t notice.”
Wrath slammed her hands on the table. “I’ve got a solution.”
“We’re not killing her… yet,” Pride scoffed.
“And why is that?” Envy cut in. “She’s bugging the palaces. Even if we are asked for an explanation which is a big if. It won’t matter. Not like she is of any use to Lucifer. No one will care.” She shrugged.
“Oh trust me, I very much want to do that,” Pride said with deep intensity. “Let’s say we find her, what do we do? The obvious answer would be what we all have done to get rid of troublesome demons, holy water. Neither of you can possess people. I don’t think this human is a priest and I can’t waste much more of my magic. We can’t exactly just get an underling to bring us the water. Who knows who in your palaces is a spy for Vanity.” Pride looked between them. “Our best chance would be to have the human-” Pride motioned to Rose. “Get some holy water from a priest then look for Vanity.”
“Like she’ll let us find her,” Envy sighed.
“Exactly.” Pride flopped down on the table. “She’s being sneaky so she won’t come after us directly. She only confronted me when she knew she could get away with it.”
“Why exactly is she doing this to you guys? I mean bugging places, trying to kill you getting spies, and whatever else she might do. Sounds like a lot of work for what?” Rose stared at Pride.
It thinks it can talk to me. Pride thought. “Probably trying to undermine our power. If Lucifer doesn’t see us fit he’ll probably replace us. Since Vanity was kicked out because we were so similar she would probably be the next pick for my job.” Pride did her best to sound as annoyed as possible. Don’t want it thinking it can have a conversation with me. I already have to deal with these two.
Rose turned her head to Wrath. “All this is over a job? Nothing else happened?” Wrath shrugged.
“Before my time.” She turned her gaze to Envy who shook her head.
“Only Pride, Lucifer, Vanity, and Apathy were there.” All three turned to Pride.
She gave a long groan before leaning her head on her hand. Which rubbed small circles into her temples. “Fine, I’ll tell the story.”
