The caves are about an hour outside town. Though the drive itself isn’t all that bad, it feels like forever considering I can make it in fifteen in my wolf. If I weren’t coming back before dark, I wouldn’t need the truck. While the drive can be nice, the run through the intertwining woods and bountiful fields is indescribably amazing.
Before I knew it, I was turning onto the same familiar dirt road, leading up the mountain to the Red Moon pack caves. We are all raised in the caves until we are old enough to go out on our own. Your representative would have to give you permission before you could ever leave the caves. My representative wouldn’t even think about letting me out until I was sixteen. He was a complete idiot when it came when it came to standing up for the omegas, letting everyone walk all over us. He would cower in a corner while the higher ranks would beat us and steal the little amount of food we had. Goddess, I do not regret beating him to a pulp when I challenged him. I role my eyes as I park my truck, just remembering that incompetent fool makes me angry.
I look out my windshield at the stone archways of the Red Moon caves. I am definitely not looking forward to this meeting. Taking a deep breath, I make my way toward the meeting hall at the back of the caves. If I wasn’t raised in these caves it would take me hours to find my way, however, knowing where I’m going it should only take me five minutes. I was lost in thought when I heard a faint whine from the halls to my right. I look back in the direction of the meeting hall, if I stop to investigate, I will be late for the meeting. I chuckle slightly at the thought before following the sound. A few more minutes won’t hurt that grumpy Alpha and I don’t care even if it does.
My hearing must be getting better because when I finally found the source of the whimpers I was at the farthest cave. I took a second to smell the air before approaching the situation. The tang of blood in the surrounding air almost covers the faint, yet unfortunately, familiar smell of apples and cinnamon. However, it could not even hope to mask the smell of rose and lemon that engulfed the area. I should have known it would have something to do with Anik.
Even though I already knew what had happened, I questioned him gently “Let me guess. Anna-James?” I bent down to be closer to the small, trembling figure that hugged the wall. My lips curled as I tried to be as caring and comforting as I could. Vibrant golden eyes looked up at me through black strands of medium length hair. Anik didn’t speak but, nodded slowly. Letting out a large sigh I looked down at my watch, I’m going to be a lot later than I thought.
Great.
“Alright. I’ll deal with her, but first, lets get you to Mrs. Holly.” I tell him as I stand up straight. “Can you walk on your own?” He nods and starts to stand as well. He’s a little wobbly so I stretch my arm out for him to balance himself with. With his hands holding tight to my arm we make our way to the center of the Omega caves.
When we get there Holly already has the first aid kit ready. I smile softly as I remember all the times when she had to patch me up. She looked almost exactly the same as she does now. The only difference is that she was always mad at me for getting in a fight and would lecture me. Right now, she is looking at Anik with sorrowful empathy.
Holly has been like a mother to every omega in this pack. She always had a familiar aura and warm smile. Every time you saw her she had her light brown hair pulled back in a bun at the base of her neck with her pink glasses framing her reassuring forest green eyes.
She came up to us and gently reached for Anik. He fell into her immediately. Holly lead him into her cave while petting his hair and whispering softly to him. I could see her place him on the pile of furs at the end of her bed before turning around to talk with me. Not after assuring him that she would be back I’m sure. In all honesty, I’m blocking out the conversation. Being late to a leader meeting by five minutes isn’t such a big deal, being late by what will be almost thirty is. Goddess, Colt is going to have a field day with this one. At the thought of our Beta Representative, I instinctually role my eyes.
“If you keep doing that they’re going to get stuck back there.” A honey like voice calls to me.
I chuckle, “You’ve told me that my entire life, but it is still yet to happen.”
We laugh for a moment before she speaks again. “Anna-James is getting out of hand, Alin.”
“I know, I will deal with her later. Her father’s reputation can’t save her this time.”
Anger burns in her eyes, “I don’t care who her father is!!! This is unacceptable!!”
All of a sudden, my head echoes the sound of the Alpha’s screaming voice. “I swear if you don’t get in this meeting hall in the next ten minutes, I will demote you for a month!!!!”
I role my eyes and kiss Holly on the forehead. “I know, I love you but I need to get to this meeting before Alpha stone loses it even more than he already has.”
“Alright sweetheart, I love you too. Don’t get in too much trouble, you hear?”
“Yes, ma’am.” We wave to each other as I start running to the meeting hall.
