Chuckling, Matthew lowered his arm, holding Lee’s hand as they both took a step backward. He led the siblings out of the conference room and back up the stairs they were escorted down earlier when they thought they were meeting the Alpha. When they got to the top of the stairs and saw the party was still going on, Matthew explained that they had one every year the week before the new school year started.
Matthew drove them home, asking about why they had moved to town but unlike his brother, he was not interrogating them, instead, he was curious about Leah’s life and who she was. When they arrived at their new house, Alex jumped out of the car and ran inside as fast as possible, wanting to reassure their mother that they were safe and nothing bad had happened to them. Leah didn’t want to leave the car; she didn’t want her time with Matthew to end.
Leaning across the center console, Matthew caressed Leah’s face, saying, “I don’t want to leave you.” Feeling Leah lean into his hand at his statement, he continued, “You know what this means, right? You know what’s happening between us?”
Smiling at his concern, Leah replied, “Yes. I may be a loner, a young one at that, but I do have connections to other wolves and packs. Another Alpha explained it to me when I came of age; he’s like a father to me so he wanted me prepared when it happened.”
“Good.” Taking a moment to stare at her, Matthew finally said, “I think your mother is waiting for you and I have to speak to my father about this and my brother.”
Letting out a small chuckle, Leah took a quick look behind her to see that her mom was waiting on the porch for her to come inside. Turning back to the wolf in the car, she said, “I’ll see you tomorrow then, so we can speak to your father.”
Leah finally dragged herself out of the car and made her way to her mother, who was still standing in front of the house. Turning back toward the wolf she had just left, she saw him watching her, making sure she was safe before he pulled away from her. Leah watched his car disappear before finally following her mom back into the house. Too distracted by everything that had happened with Matthew, Leah didn’t notice her mom watching her, waiting for an explanation of why she was out with Alex and not home. Taking a seat on the sofa that came with the house, Leah finally noticed the silence and looking up, saw that her mom and brother were both scrutinizing her.
For almost an hour, the siblings took turns telling their mother about their drive and what had happened when they arrived and where they had been. In the middle of their story, they called for pizza since none of them had had a chance to eat dinner and the siblings were taken before making the call earlier. When Alex got to the part of Matthew and Leah's meeting for the first time, their mom swiveled her head to stare at Leah. Knowing what her mom was silently asking, Leah smiled and nodded, saying that they could talk about it in the morning.
After their retelling of events, the three moved their bags into their new bedrooms before helping each other make beds and set up pillows and blankets. By the time they finished, it was nearing midnight and they had all had a long day, so their mother declared lights out and sent them all to bed. When Leah got to her room, she realized she needed to make two calls before going to bed, knowing that both males would be waiting for her call, already on edge since she was late in calling them.
Leaning back on her new bed, Leah scrolled through her contacts, finding the first name she had to call and smiling at the reaction she knew was coming. Pressing the call button, she didn’t have to wait for more than two rings before a gruff voice called out to her, “Took you long enough to call. I was getting ready to call in the cavalry, daughter.”
