Aaron closed his eyes in fear waiting for the pain and blood and the end of everything, but it didn’t come. He slowly opened his eyes and looked down to see it was a retractable knife as he sighed in relief Em joined Olivia in laughing at him. It’d only been a few minutes and he was sick of this duo. He came here to be serious and learn and give information, not be laughed at. If he was looking to be made fun of he’d have stayed at school to be bullied after classes.
Though they were annoying and unfortunately important, if this were a normal case, he did think Em was sort of cute- “ewwww” he looked up to see Em staring at her wrist where the words “She’s sort of cute” had appeared “Ew ew ew” Em began trying to rub away the red words. Aaron tried to hide the fact that he knew it was he who had caused such words, but Em noticed and angrily glared his way “I don’t like boys! You- you dumbass! Ugh!! Eww.”
Once Em had angrily slapped and yelled off Aaron’s ear and Olivia had convinced her to let it go (along with making a reference to an ice centered children’s movie) and whispering about what Aaron thought he heard was ‘experiments’ Em left into a blue doored room and re-entered with a box. She put on rubber gloves from the box and handed him an empty notebook off the table different from the one she had been scribbling in before. “Everything you know. Put it there. Tell me when you're done.” she then silently plucked a strand of hair from his head and put it in a baggy. She had him spit in a vial too and asked to draw blood which he declined without hesitation. Before leaving the room she picked up a walkie talkie from the box and muttered to it “We’ve got work, Cindy” then put everything back into the box and swiftly took it and left into one of the various doors this one a violet color.
Looking at all the doors, each Aaron realized, was a color of the rainbow though out of order. He wondered if it was intentional or not and if they had meaning or if it was simply a part of the fun and games Em played, the longer he spent with her the more insane she seemed. She seemed so cool and nonchalant and level headed at school to him, so.. What the hell is this new and terrifying demeanor she holds? Dexter was right, thought Aaron, she truly is a wild card. What costs would he be risking with such an unreadable pawn? And Olivia. She was an entirely unknown factor. He didn’t realize Em was close to someone let alone this close. It could ruin his role. This new pawn could ruin his life and family. She seems to not be much involved but knowing she’s here and obviously in hands on placement she seems closer to the answers than even old Cindy, but Cindy wasn’t an issue she could easily and unquestionably be put on her death bed. He’s done well with his act so far, but how long can he act with such prices and such an unpredictable girl and the strange sources she has that even his intel didn’t know about.
This ‘goth princess’ was nothing of the sort it seemed. And how many masks was she wearing? Wondered Aaron. He could’ve spent this time looking around the room he was in but this room was obviously a distraction to hide when the rainbow doors meant and held.
His mind kept wandering to Olivia, the trans girl fidgeting in front of him. She shouldn’t be here. Based on his intel, she shouldn’t exist, but she’s here and his original plan is screwed because of her and Em’s odd mannerisms.
Gods if his family had stayed quiet the government wouldn’t be on their backs like this! But hopes are for societies with freedom, not ones ruled strongly by a government that commands every aspect of their world.
“Unfortunately Artmias isn’t a country of freedom. It’s a country of closed doors, isolation, and citizens who don’t even know there are other countries aside from this experimental hell. And the “president”! My that idiotic figure he doesn’t do anything but speak. The men and women and non binaries behind him are those that truly rule, but every fake country needs a fake leader I suppose. Do not be fooled by what horridness this country seems to go though, for like in a country of slaves the people here too have a sort of underground way. A network for people, items, intel, and most of all… Notebooks! Notebooks full of answers, truths, and experiences. All hidden, but not so easily and not so simply. Don’t be deceived by the simple story pages, but see the unspoken world that is behind even your eyelids or living on the back of your hand.”
Olivia read interrupting Aaron’s thoughts. She held a poor beaten old notebook with a fraying once red now pink ribbon hanging from the open pages. She had a bag at her feet and delicately held the book with care. “I knew the man who wrote this…” she mumbled for Aaron to just barely hear. “He was practically my own father…” she quietly breathed “i can’t believe Em has kept this… it must hurt her so much to reread her Papa’s words… especially since her dad moved on to Kara after the incident.” Aaron put on a puzzled look as he quietly contemplated these words and what important info on Em he could get from this naive girl. She seemed to notice his expression and went on to explain “Uhm… Em’s Papa died in an accident and her dad recently remarried… so uhm yeah…” Aaron nodded to show he understood. “How did he die?” Aaron asked, carefully picking his words. “I believe she will share when she chooses to, sorry.”
Then Aaron saw her. Cindy. Gods that old hag had been running from the government for so long. She was right here now he could get info from her, but unlikely. Also Em is his job, not Cindy. Shit. Though Aaron as Cindy glanced at him with recognition. “Careful with this one” she said to Olivia motioning at Aaron and then continuing on towards the violet doored room. Olivia looked confused and Aaron portrayed a confused look to match when she glanced his way. He had a lot on the line and this idiot noticing he knows something wasn’t an option. Sure it felt wrong to him to lie and act innocent, but in the end only Em would die, and that was better than all his family including his newborn sister.
