Alistair and The Unknown- The Upside Down

Curiosity Got The Cat

Curiosity Got The Cat

Jun 15, 2020

(Kitty)

The chubby cat wandered through the alleyways, heading for the trees. She suddenly lifted her head up in the air, sniffing quietly.

Dead animal

She crept down to the storm wash, following the putrid scent. She pushed the log out of the way, revealing the rotting cat carcass. The cat had been brutally killed, it's face ripped off in a hasty manner. Its insides poured out on the concrete, staining it with red blood.

Kitty immediately thought of the human, knowing she would have to show him.

-------------

(Alastor)

"Hey, Bugs can I borrow your bike? Looks like it's gonna rain again." I said to him, walking over to where he was leaning against the wall.

"Sure, I'll just walk," He gestured to the rusty old thing that was bound to fall apart one day.

"Why don't you ever bring it home?" I asked, suddenly curious. Bugs shrugged.

"I stole it, remember? My mom would beat my ass if she found out," He crossed his arms.

"Oh yeah," I frowned at him, flipping up the kickstand and cycling over to to the hole in the fence. I ducked, nearly running over Kitty who was standing in the path.

She rarely ever came this far.

"Why are you here?"

She meowed, running down the slope and stopping at a fallen log. I squinted at it from the top of the hill, seeing something red. Blood?

I stopped at the foot, letting the bike fall to the ground already running to where she was sitting. I lifted the log, nearly dropping it again after I saw what was under it.

A carcass of a cat was strewn about the place, obviously killed by something big. The blood was already washing away from the small drops of rain that were already falling from the sky.

"Come on, something will eat it," I said to Kitty. She jumped into the basket on the handlebars.

I rode through the trees, hearing distant thunder.

I rode faster, not wanting to be electrocuted. I reached the strip of asphalt and began to see more and more houses and trailers.

It was bit dark already, daylight savings and all that jazz.

I looked up and locked eyes with a ten-foot-tall monster-like thing that was standing in the way, staring at me with its bleach-white eyes, glowing eerily like the moon. It was like a shadow when it was sunset, but freakishly tall.

I swerved to avoid it, crashing into a flower bed.

I could feel my heartbeat racing when I looked up again, but it vanished into thin air. I shook my head, I was probably imaging things again. I have forgotten to take my pills this morning.

Kitty meowed, pushing her wet nose into my bleeding palm.

I smiled at her, picking up Bugs's bike again, wincing at the pain.

I shook my head again.

-----------

I slammed the door behind me because it never seemed to shut right.

Josh was on the couch, the news on the small TV.

"Did you take your pills?" I asked him, setting my backpack on the counter.

"Mhm," He answered, which is all I ever get from him. I shut off the news.

"Don't need that to scare you again," I mumbled.

"Hm?" He grunted, pointing to my scratches.

"Oh, I just fell," I lied, not wanting to scare my fragile brother. I snatched my apron from the chair, readying dinner. I relaxed, cooking is my element.

I loud bang from the front room startled me, nearly making me drop the pan I was holding.

Josh had fallen, probably because of his leg again. I sighed, helping him up and leading him back to the couch.

"Stay here, okay?" I looked into his cloudy eyes, knowing he couldn't see me. I lifted a hand to stroke his cheek, to let him know that I was there. I headed back to the kitchen and turned off the stove, plating dinner.

I finished up our nightly routine, the same process I went through every day to take care of Josh.

I helped him to his room, suddenly feeling fatigued.

"Dad, d-d-dad, he's g-gone," Josh whispered into the darkness, his misty eyes filling with tears. My brother sometimes had flashbacks from the army.

"No, he's okay," That was the only way I could get him to calm down. I grabbed his hand, leaning against the side of the bed.

Josh whimpered.

The exhaustion was almost too much to bear.

"Your okay,"
