By the time I reach my room, I'm a weeping mess. I can feel snot running out of my nose, but I can't even bother to wipe it away. I just faceplant on my pillow and stifle a guttural scream. Soon I’m heaving with sobs and don’t even care how loud I am. No one’s going to disturb me. I stay this way for ten or twenty minutes, losing all concept of time in my sorrow. When I finally lift my head and grab a tissue from my nightstand I notice my laptop is still open, and a couple of the guys are on videochat. I grab my headphones and turn on my mic, but not the camera.
"Hey hey hey you crazy kids," I say, going for casual but sounding a bit like a clown trying to be too hip. "What'd I miss?"
"Nothing much," Sunny responds, sitting up straighter and tucking a chunk of black hair behind her ear. "Way to be afk forever though! I thought I was gonna catch you and then it was just Jonah for the longest time."
Jonah rolled his green eyes. I’m always surprised they show up so green on my screen. "So sorry to disappoint, Sun. Must have been torture."
"You know you missed her too! He was already on video when I got here, so I thought he was trying to reach you but you were already muted when I got here a couple minutes ago. It said he muted you, so I thought you were here but he said you just left it all on." I inhale sharply.
A private message pops up in chat. It’s Jonah: Hope you’re okay. No one else heard.
"You make me sound like a total creeper," Jonah whines at Sunny. "I just wanted to video chat today. I've got the house to myself so I can do whatever we want!"
Sunny wrinkles her nose. "Sounds like the start of one awkward live-cam sesh. I'm not tipping you, Jonah." I laugh out loud, and to Jonah I type: thanks. It could be either Sunny or me, but his face goes a shade pink and he grins a bit wider.
"I'll throw you a bitcoin if you take it off," I joke, and he lifts his shirt just enough to cover his eyes.
"Not worth a bitcoin," Sunny complains. "Give us the D." Jonah falls back on his bed, exiting the screen and leaving us to stare at a blank wall. Sunny laughs so hard she struggles to breathe. Laney appears and quirks an eyebrow at our antics.
"So, did I come at a bad time, or?"
Sunny wipes at the tears starting to form in her eyes. "You came at just the right time if you're here for a show. Jonah's trying a solo cam show for us today. He accepts tips in bitcoin, check, or paypal. But don't try to give him advice for tips because he does not like that at all. You’ll get the banhammer." A single finger appears in Jonah's screen to flip Sunny off. "You know just how I like it, baby," she coos, and Jonah groans with annoyance.
"Well, if we're done turning Jonah all shades of red, I wanna hear the latest on Ana! Patrick dig anything up?"
"Not yet, but we'll see. Let me check my email."
"No cam?" Laney asks. "I wanna see your pretty face!" Sunny agrees, loudly, so I click my cam on and salute. In my shitty webcam, my eyes don’t look too alarmingly red and puffy at least. I look more tired than freshly cried out. Jonah sits back up for a moment until Laney adds "Yeah, that brought him back," and he flops back again while rolling his very green eyes.
"No emails from Patrick, but I see there may be hot singles in my area,” I joke.
"Good think we got all those emails for penis enlargement pills," Sunny says with a shrug. "Guess they'll come in handy"
"Not all of us need to use them!" Jonah says from his hidden spot, and it earns him a wolf whistle from Laney.
"Prove it!" Sunny and I say in unison, and fall into more peals of laughter.
"Man, I miss when it was a video chat of one. Just Jonah, sitting by himself, not being roasted or harassed by mysterious internet vixens. It was a simpler time." He sits back up, face uncovered.
"You'd tell us if we really bothered you, right Jonah? I don't ever want you feeling truly uncomfortable," Laney says, always the cool-headed one.
Jonah nods. "Yeah, don't worry. They're only teasing. If I ever got upset I'd just sign off like Sunny did after the Broncos brutally lost--again."
"Bite me, J. Jonah Jameson!"
"You're going to need to pay for an in-person session for that!"
Appeased, Laney continues with me. "Any new developments today?" she asks.
I shrug. "Kay's still here, acting like she belongs. Mom doesn't even act like anything is up, and now she suddenly wants me to go visit my dad in prison this weekend. I haven't even seen him since he got arrested--I've skipped every bit of court."
All three of them sit with their eyes wide. Jonah whistles. "Heavy," he says, eyes sympathetic.
"Yeah, yeah," I say, knowing all three were squirming in their seats, "This is a Patrick division question. He's the only one who ever visited his murder parent. Most everyone else never got the option."
Jonah shrugged. "I mean, I guess I could, but I never really thought of it seriously. I don't think I ever would. But I know Laney and Sunny don't get the choice."
"I wouldn't have," says Laney.
"I would have," Sunny whispers in response.
"I guess it's really just up to you then, Ana. Listen to your gut," Laney says. "Maybe you could use the closure."
"Or maybe you could get more information," Jonah adds, and I like the way he thinks.
