Sitting in class, I couldn’t concentrate on the lesson at all! My mind was racing all around that guy. Since we started meeting, I didn’t know very much about him, he’s a third year, same as Jasper, and a Technology Engineering major. He plans to have his own company but that’s as far as he went with it, I never see him hang out with anyone so maybe he’s just focused on his studies like I am.
But even so, I still have Jas by my side. He doesn’t talk about growing up as a kid, just said he has a loving family back home. That’s about all I know when it comes to his life, we mostly talk about likes, dislikes, and things like that. He loves coffee, doesn’t like sweets very much but eats them on occasion, loves spicy and sour foods, doesn’t drink soda or tea at all, enjoys the gym, doesn’t like being in cramped spaces, prefers to spend his time quietly in nature, and I never know what he’s thinking and that drives me crazy the most.
I don’t know hardly anything about him, so why am I so interested in him, and why did I get so flustered today?! He invited me to the movies, and I don’t know what to do!
Then I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Huh? Oh, hey Jones. What’s up?”
Krystal Jones is a good classmate of mine. We don’t hang outside of class but she’s a wonderful classroom friend.
“You look distracted. What’s going on?”
She was looking at me with her big honey brown eyes.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry I’m just not really into it today. I think I might leave early.” I wasn’t lying, I really wasn’t feeling class.
Also, I could afford to skip a class, Jones would let me use her notes which is wonderful.
“Well looks like your lucky day, because your super sexy best friend is trying to get me to point you in his direction! Go ahead, I’ll give you the notes later!” She had a warm smile, wavy brown hair that just barely passed her shoulders, slim figure, and just an inch shorter than me.
If she wasn’t so focused on her current boyfriend and classes, I’m sure we would hang out and have a great time, but I didn’t want her to have to divide up more of her precious time. I smiled back at her,
“Thanks Jones. I’ll make it up to you!” I grabbed my stuff and walked out.
“Hey Jas! Why aren’t you in class right now?” It’s not like Jasper to not be in class when he’s supposed to.
“Oh, I had a class that let us take our exam a week early so we could prepare for other classes. I finished early so I thought I’d pick you up and we could grab a bite.” Jasper grabbed my hand. I realize what he’s doing now,
“Are you hiding from someone?” I shot back at him.
“Ah, I’ll pay for it if you just look like my loving girlfriend while we eat.” His smile didn’t fade, he was so good at faking a loving boyfriend look.
And to top it off, he knows my weakness!
“Honey! I’ve missed you so much! I’m so happy you came to pick me up!” I beamed at him while I grabbed his arm, he’s paying for my food so the least I can do is help him out right?
That’s what friends are for after all.
As we walked to the diner a girl stepped in front of us.
She had dark hair to the middle of her back styled in elegant curls, hazel eyes, full lips, make up placed perfectly on her face, about my height and curvy body. She had a form fitting blouse and skirt on with ankle boots with a heel on them. She looked very girlie as opposed to my ponytail, solid black long-sleeved shirt, straight legged jeans, and vans.
She looked sad and furious at the same time, I recognized this look, it’s the same look that so many of Jas’ hook ups have given us when he uses me to scare them off. Tears filled her eyes and her voice started to choke as she spoke to us,
“So, this is what I am to you? We slept together, it hasn’t even been three days and you ignore my calls and texts because you get with some plain looking girl?! What is wrong with you Jasper?!”
Yep, I knew it.
A hook up gone wrong and now he’s dragging me into it like always.
“Well, I never said I was interested in dating you. I also told you not to expect anything from me and you said you didn’t care you just wanted to be with me, am I wrong?” Jasper said sounding indifferent.
He always did this when girls wouldn’t let go, if she kept pressing the issue, he would turn cold and really hurt her to get the point across. He’s a playboy and it doesn’t even bother him.
She wasn’t even holding back the tears after his response,
“But, I thought if you got to know me you would change your mind!” I’ve heard this conversation so many times I could recite it to them, but I usually stay quiet until it gets out of hand.
And Jasper spoke again,
“That’s your fault for having false intentions about me, I never agreed to any of those thoughts in your head. Now move along, I’m trying to grab a bite to eat with someone special too me.”
He was cold this this time, the look on his face wasn’t as cold as he made it look though, he just wanted her to forget about him.
She went to open her mouth to speak but she stopped. Then, she looked at me, and our eyes met. I didn’t break the connection I never do. I know what the next part of the conversation holds, it will either be a warning that he’s using me the same way he did her or it will end up in her wanting to fight me to prove she would be a better fit at his side.
“Usually I would want to fight at this point, but you didn’t break eye contact with me even once so I’m sure you’re prepared to fight and don’t show any fear. Also, I’m wearing a skirt so it would be more embarrassing for me considering your attire is better suited for rolling around on the ground. You heard our conversation,”
her voice had stabilized by this point, but tears were still running down her face,
“He slept with me three times total and was gone the next morning with a text on my phone saying our time together was over. It’s embarrassing to be played like this but he’s right, I did create my own intentions in my head. He will do the same exact thing to you. You’re obviously going to do what you want, but if you don’t wanna be in my position by next week I’d walk away if I were you.”
She gave me this warning like she wished someone had given her the same warning. I was hungry so I wanted the confrontation to be over with.
So, I decided it would be best to thank her and go on our way.
But Jasper had one last rude comment he wanted to make because he’s an asshole and sometimes I just want to punch him.
He wrapped his arm around me and didn’t falter,
“I told you, I’m trying to go get some food with someone special to me, I never once told you that you were special to me. So, who do you think you are to “warn” a complete stranger about something that would never happen to her?”
The girl got upset, walked passed us, and whispered to me,
“I hope you don’t let him hurt you.” And she continued to walk.
I looked up at Jasper as we started walking toward the diner,
“Say it, I know you want to Kai.”
He knows me so well,
“I wasn’t going to say anything because I’ve already said it so many times but, you asked for it: If you would settle down and stop sleeping with girls and getting their hopes up, you wouldn’t have to go through embarrassing confrontations like this and wouldn’t spend so much money buying me food to play along.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know, but I like buying you food and I’m a man. I have needs. You won’t understand until you get some experience in this part of life so I’m not going to try to explain it.”
He said it so monotone because it’s the same conversation we always have.
Lately though, since I started having coffee with Daemon, I’ve thought about what it feels like to care about someone who isn’t a friend or family.
Thinking about this, something slipped out of my mouth,
“I hope when that time comes, that I’ll never deal with a playboy like you.”
Shit.
I didn’t mean for it to sound so cold. I was so shocked we both stopped walking.
I didn’t dare look him in the eyes because I already knew what waited for me if I did. He took his arm off me and kept walking,
Shit.
“Uh, Jas I didn’t mean for that to sound—”
“No, it’s okay. You’re right Kai,”
he stopped and looked back at me with business smile,
Shit.
“I hope you never have to deal with someone like me.”
Shit.
It was the first time he ever cut me off.
“Now, I promised you food so let’s go; you’ve gotten hangry.”
I just nodded and followed. I’m such a terrible friend, I shouldn’t have said something like that.
