It had been a couple of day’s since we last talked, not a single letter had appeared in the transporter, I had guessed he just didn’t want to talk to me anymore. Or maybe he was going through some troubles, he had used all all of his vacation time from his work, and now there was nothing else he could do but suck it up and get his but moving once again. It had only been a couple of weeks that he had taken off from his schedule, that’s why I could stay with him.
I called his work just to see if he had showed up today, and he had, thank god, but he wasn’t sending any other letter’s, so I really don’t know if I should be the one sending letter’s to him or just wait for him to respond.
That is until my phone rang, a facetime request from him.
I had to accept.
“Hey, I was just thinking about you,” I said
“Oh really?” he spoke, he was out of frame, presumably getting things ready, he was on his laptop, I was on my phone. “What did I ever do to become this important?” he asked, rhetorical question of course. Still he made me smile.
“I don’t know, you figure it out,” I said, kinda playing along, he finally came in frame, he had his glasses on, he normally wore contact’s. A smile cam through him, this was probably the first time I saw him smile in the span of two weeks.
“Hey, um… listen,” he started. “I just wanted to thank you, you know, for all the things you did for me, you really didn’t had to do all the stuff you did, yet you did, and I’m just really thankful for that,” he said, was this the reason he was calling me?
“Don’t even mention it, it’s what friends do,” I said.
“Yeah, friends,” he said.
“You needed help, and I couldn’t let you be alone like that,”
“Always the healer,” he said, I smiled, it was true.
Suddenly he took an 80 degree turn and started talking to me about something else. “Anyway, I have to tell you something,”
“Oh, what is it?” I asked.
“Remember those pendant’s, the matching one’s we got, I don’t even remember where we got them from,” he said, almost with haste.
“Yeah I remember,” I said.
“Do you still by any chance have your’s?” he asked. “Something weird happened with mine,” he said, curiosity got the better of me and I instantly started searching for it, I held my phone with one hand and used the other one to search through my drawer’s, then I remembered where I had placed it, quickly sawed through my room cabinet’s and finally found it.
“Here it is,” I said holding it up to the camera, in between my finger’s, he held up his too.
Almost as if on cue, the pendant’s started glowing. The ruby from the inside showed.
“Woah,” he said.
“What’s going on, why are they activating again?” I asked.
“I don’t know, but something’s going on, and I don’t think it’s about us,” he said.
These pendant’s, we never truly understood them, their potency, and why they worked their magic, we used to use them to pull little pranks, and get us out of trouble, stop time and get more study time, things like that, but when we broke up, they stopped working, I realized that they would only work if we were together, nay they only worked if we loved each other.
These pendant’s never let us lie. They were almost like our protector’s back in the day, they helped us achieve things we could never on our own, and they were the cause of our world almost coming to an end, but now, they were activating again, and we didn’t know why, that’s what scared me the most.
We hanged up but promise to write if anything happened, I held the pendant in my hand, it’s shiny stone glimmering with a pulsing beat.
We still don’t really know how they work to this day.
“I need to know, please tell me what you want,” I spoke to it, sitting down on the floor of my tiny apartment. “Please, just show me, just show me what you want from us,”
It didn’t, and it stopped glowing. I sighed.
Non the less I threw on a new lace around the rock, and old leather black string I had lying around and tied it around my neck.
