Keith’s POV
“Dude! I got to go home.” I throw the comic on the couch.
“You’re still come to Blake’s party, right?” Michael sets aside his comics.
“I don’t know, man. My brother’s kind of sick and my dad…You know, always busy.” I shrug.
“It’s Blake’s birthday.” He reminds me.
“Yeah, I know.” I sling my backpack on my back.
“She is going to be pissed.”
I roll my eyes and exit his room. I am running in a hurry downstairs and see Mrs. Anderson slicing a meatloaf in the kitchen. I am starving.
“Bye, Mrs. Anderson!”
“Keith!” She calls after me.
“Here, I have packed some meatloaf in there.” She offers me to take this blue container.
“Thanks, Mrs. Anderson!” I wave her goodbye.
Michael only lives two blocks away from my house so I will be home soon. The rain is pouring really hard. I am not even sure if I can drive in this weather, but I can't leave my siblings home alone. I drive slowly and very carefully. After one eternity, I arrive at my house.
“Kenny? Kat?” I call after them then locking the door behind me.
“KEITH!!!!!” Katherine is running into my arms.
“Hey, Snow White!” I lift her up. “Where is Kenny and Keaton?”
“Keaton is in the hospital with dad.” Kennedy emerges from the kitchen.
“WHAT?!!” I look at Kenny and then back to Kat.
“Daddy took him to the hospital this morning.” Kat informs me.
“You could have told me.” I walk with Kat in my arms into the living room.
“I texted you.” Kenny glares at me.
“My phone died.” I explain to her.
“Yeah, right.” She rolls her eyes.
I put Kat on the couch and take my phone out to charge it. I need to call my dad to check on Keaton. Kennedy told me that he had a fever last night but I thought it was just a fever.
“Dad? How’s Keaton?!” I blur out as soon as he picks up.
“He is okay. We’re going to be home soon. Are you home?”
I sigh a relief. “Yeah.”
“Okay, where is…”
“Dad? Dad?” I look at my phone and the call’s ended.
His must be running out of battery. Like always. Thank the God, Keaton is okay. I was really worried. I put down my phone and join Kennedy in the kitchen.
“Here!” I put the meatloaf down on the counter.
“Meatloaf!” Kennedy cheers. It’s her favorite.
“Yeah. How’s the baking day?” I fill my glass with milk.
“It was great. I sold all the cupcakes.” She answers with a full mouth of Oreo.
“I thought you’re going to sell Brownies.”
“No, Daddy left the Brownie in his office.”
“Classic.” I roll my eyes.
I gather my bag and head upstairs. If dad’s going to be home soon, maybe I can still make it to Blake’s party. It’s raining, but I hope it will stop soon. I open my small closet and look for my favorite Superman Jacket. This black one I am wearing already smells like shit. I slide the hanger one by one but my Superman jacket is nowhere to be found. I throw my head back just when I remember that it’s still in the Laundry room. I didn’t pick it up from the dryer when I left to Michael’s house.
I slam my closet door and walk downstairs to the end of the hall to the laundry room. Kennedy and Katherine are laughing along with Sponge Bob on TV, and I can’t help myself to giggle. I turn the door knob and swing open the laundry room only to find a woman in a bright red bra. She was sliding her t-shirt on to her arms when our eyes meet.
Her wet hair is as red as blood and wavy. Her eyes are fierce brown with thick faded brown eyebrows. My eyes stuck on her small heart shape face then to her full red lips. When my eyes drop further, she is defensively covering her amazing lady parts with her t-shirt. She crosses her hands in front of her chest and take away all the greatness from me.
I can’t move. I am stuck by this beauty. My eyes are fixated on her beautiful face. Who is this woman? She can’t be here at my house uninvited. Oh, she must be the Nanny. I am standing still without making any noise or any move. The woman is coming from me. Oh, God! She walks gracefully towards me with her eyes staring at me. The closer she gets, the harder my heart is beating. All the things in mind shattered when she shuts the door and locks me out.
