Lara’s POV
“Yeah, who told me to move into New York but went on a trip with her husband when I was actually unpacking in my new house anyway?” I roll my eyes to the phone.
“I forgot that her cousin’s wedding is in Hawaii.” Michelle giggles.
I almost copy her giggle, “I mean it’s Hawaii! How could you forget?”
“I am here, anyway.” She keeps giggling. “Now give me a ride to school!”
Michelle is the Queen of forgetting. I am not sure how she manages to remember that I am her best friend all this time?! She was the one who convinced me to live in New York. I only agreed to her idea because I thought that we would be neighbors, but the house next to hers was sold to another person who apparently offered more money than me. Even though we don’t live in the same neighborhood, our houses are only ten minutes’ drive apart.
“Get in!” I disconnect the call and roll down my window.
As soon as she gets in my car, Michelle squeezes me tightly and wiggles me to the right and to the left. She squeaks out of excitement.
“I…can’t breathe!” I pretend to suffocate.
“Mwah!” She kisses my cheek. “I missed you so much!”
I retreat myself far away from her to pretend that I actually am upset because she left on the day I moved in, but I quickly give up and give her a huge bear hug.
“Where is Dominic?” I ask Michelle.
“He got a call from the hospital this really early morning.” She rolls her eyes.
“Well, you married a doctor!” I giggle then start driving.
“We were in the middle of something.” She gestures her early activity with her husband using her thumb and her point fingers.
“EW!!!” I tease her.
Actually, I was expecting that she would get mad, but she didn’t. Instead, she crosses her arms on her moderate chest and narrow her eyes on me. I choose to roar my engine and hit the road.
“What?!” I glance over to her then back to the road again.
“How long?” She pops her question.
“How long…?”
“How long has it been since that special night in Miami again?”
“What do you mean?” I know where this is going.
“AH!” she claps her hands. “Five months!”
“Mish!”
“You need to get laid!” She throws her burnt orange hair over her shoulder.
I roll my eyes.
“Seriously, I could hook you up with Dom’s friends.” She gets super excited to match making me with apparently everyone she knows.
“Err, I don’t know.”
“Oh, yeah. You like nerds.” She pouts. “You need a boring librarian or someone who’s reading thick books all the time.”
“You like nerds too, that’s why you married Dom!” I snort.
“Uh, I know!” She raises her hands. “Maybe a History teacher in my school. He’s a bit boring but he has a nice body.” She whistles.
“Mish…”
She cuts me off, “Or maybe the Math teacher. He has killer jaws and dark slick hair, just like you’re favorite.”
“I hate Math.” I grunt.
“You know what?! Dom’s cousin’s friend is actually a book editor. He’s cute and tall and shy and…”
“Mish!” I cut her off.
Michelle is biting her lips. Probably feeling sorry that she couldn’t stop talking, and she just realized that I didn’t need her to be a match maker in this early morning.
“I am sorry.” She pleads.
“What kind of school is that anyway to have handsome teachers anyway?” I try to change the subject. “When I was in high school the male teachers were either bald and fat or old and hairy.”
Thankfully we laugh it off.
Michelle tells me to turn the car to the right and park right behind a bright yellow school bus. I was expecting a big green yard and a brick building just like our high school back in Seattle, but no! This uptown school has no yard at al,l and it looks more like a luxurious building. If the words ‘KINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL’ are not printed on the glass doors, I am not going to believe it.
“WOW!” That’s all I can say.
“I know, right!” Michelle nods her head.
“It’s full of hot teachers! Nice!”
“Hey! You’re sitting next to one of them.” Michelle snaps her fingers.
I roll my eyes and pretending to be disgust. Michelle swats my arms, and we can’t stop laughing. I miss her so much! We are struggling to stop and when we finally do, my eyes are caught in a meadow underneath the dark sky.
“Lars!” Michelle snatches me back before I am trapped.
“What?”
“Who are you looking at?” Michelle looks out of the window, then quickly back to me.
“Nobody.” I keep my head down.
“You know Keith?”
“He's my neighbor.” I am panicking.
My eyes go back outside the window to find him again still leaning against the grey wall and still glaring at me. I remember that t-shirt from Saturday night. His thick black hair is looking so soft, and his ripped jeans are showing part of his thighs.
“OMG!!” Michelle drops her jaws. “Don’t tell me that his father is your hot new neighbor slash editor?!!”
I bite down my lips and shrink myself into the seat.
“You little bitch!” Michelle swats my arm again.
“I know! I know!” I find myself guilty.
“He saw your freaking tits!” Michelle freaks out and laughs at the same time.
“I know!” I bang my head to the steering wheel.
“Well, if you bang his dad, he would see your big tits too.” Michelle can’t contain her excitement.
“Are you really a teacher?” I narrow my eyes at her stupid joke.
“He’s the one that was rude to you at that family dinner, right?!”
“Yup.”
“He was really nice, you know. A brilliant student. Always got an A, well he still does. It’s just that his attitude has changed that much.” Michelle informs me.
“He was nice?!” I almost scream.
“Oh, yeah. Like a real gentleman.”
“Really?” I don’t believe her for a second.
“He turned into a true trouble maker after an incident at school, two years ago.” There is no energy in Michelle’s face any longer. Something bad must have happened.
“What happened?”
“Nobody knows exactly what but her husband punched in the face right at a football game.”
“So, the whole school was basically there.” I assume.
“It was really bad.” Michelle nods her head. “We all assumed that his dad had an affair with the teacher.”
“You never told me about this!” I protest. "And how do you know all of this? You're literally new here."
“Six months in here is enough to hear about gossips!"
I honestly don’t know what to think. Kyle seems like a really nice guy. Maybe it was only a misunderstanding.
“Your brain must be defending him by now.” A mischievous smirk is drawn on her face.
“No, I am not!” I defend myself.
“Yes, you are! You always fall for bad guys.” She laughs.
Michelle continue her laughter as she opens the door. She knocks on my widow just right after I started the engine. I know what she’s about to say, but I roll the window down anyway. She pops her head in and put a smirk on her pretty face.
“I know what you’re thinking.” I remind her.
“Yeah? I know you want to bang that hunk!”
“Michelle!”
“Love you, big tits!” She half laughs and blows me a kiss.
“Love you, big ass!” I copy her laughter.
