The Stalker

Ebony Pin by Christian Shower

Ebony Pin by Christian Shower

Jul 01, 2020

Today's review is Ebony Pin by Christian Shower. Ebony Pin is a remarkably written story based on lesser-known Chinese myths. Ebony Pin is an enjoyable combination of Alice in Wonderland and The Lord of the Rings. With the main character being a rabbit named Yu'er, it is evident that this story is exceptionally creative. Christian Shower does a fantastic job of writing this story, even though there are a few issues this story could improve on.

In all honesty, when I first read the description of Ebony Pin, I was not excited to read this novel. Many clichés were scattered within the description of Ebony Pin. Using clichés in any form of writing can be a significant issue. When an author uses a cliché in their writing, the author sounds dispassionate about their story. "Join Yu'er as she embarks upon a journey of adventure and self-discovery." Is the first sentence written in the description of Ebony Pin, which is a common platitude (cliché) in the writing community. Clichés sound sloppy and unprofessional; they can make any person turn away a perfectly well-written book.

What really flips my button when I read a book is when people use the second person. While the second person can work for some people, it is very uncommon. The second person can sound mediocre and inadequate, which negatively impacts the entertainment one may have when reading a story. The second person was used in the first few episodes of Ebony Pin, and like countless other novels, it did not sound pleasing. The difficulty in using the second person is that it is a very complicated concept to grasp in writing. It is not easy to maintain the narrative of using the second person in a long piece of writing.* Luckily, later episodes were written in the first person, enhancing the quality of this novel.

What I thoroughly enjoyed about Ebony Pin is that the story is very “Mad Hatter”-esque. Each page is like a piece of art on its own. Each character is colorful and filled with diverse characteristics that make them seem real. Christian Showers does an excellent job portraying emotions in each of his characters. The whimsical characters and compelling plot both lead to a very imaginative and entertaining story.

Even though there were various issues in the first few episodes of Ebony Pin, the next ones are gripping. Each page is filled with an intricate spider web of plot and perfectly placed details. One of the things which many people struggle in is finding a way to speed up time without it sounding messy and jumbled, which Christian Shower managed to do very well. Christian Shower has written a complex story with unique characters. From reading the description to finishing this story (so far), my expectations were exceeded. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone to read this novel.

Song Recommendation of the day:

Big Spender by Shirley Bassey
Both Shirley Bassey and Peggy Lee sound great when they sing this song.
