Chapter 4 (Yukine)
Breakfast this morning was nothing out of the ordinary. Grab some breaky, head to the swim team’s table then eat. Honestly my whole day was ordinary, nothing really happened. I guess during English everyone started teasing Mr. Fenfeild because one of the kids noticed he was wearing an engagement ring but that was about it. Last period was math. It’s probably the subject that I’m the worst at, it’s the bane of my existence honestly.
When school finished I waited for the hallways to calm down and headed down the stairs and to the pool. Since I missed out on yesterday's swim practice I wanted to get a practice in today. The swim team practices around twice a week normally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but when there’s a competition we practice almost everyday. Joining the school’s swim team was probably the main reason why I wanted to go to Brisbane Johnson College. I’ve always admired professional swim athletes ever since I saw my first swim race when I was five years old. I thought it was so cool how they glided through the water so fast and swam like a torpedo in the water. It’s what made me wanna do competitive swimming in the first place. I may not be the number one swimmer on our team but I can at least say I’m one of the best.
The school invested a lot of money into the swim team because it was probably one of the only things that the school was really known for and good at. The school’s pool was an indoor heated pool that was located next to our gymnasium. Once you entered it was very humid and it was very refreshing during Autumn and Winter to have it nice and warm. The school would usually shut the heaters off in Summer though because of how hot it gets. Australia’s really weird. It can be scorching hot during Summer but freezing cold during Winter.
When I entered the pool it was very humid but since it’s Summer the pool’s heaters weren’t on. The building was empty apart from maybe a janitor or two. I walked down the front of the pool to head to the changing rooms that were across from the pool. The walkways of the pool were still damp from when the janitors cleaned. The school’s pool is open 24/7 for the swim team to practice but if you want to use the pool for other purposes apart from swim training you need permission from the school’s head sport teacher. When I walked inside the changing rooms I entered one of the shower stalls and changed into my swim gear. I usually just wore some long long black jammers that had a simple pattern near the ankles for training, because boardies caused too much drag and I didn’t feel comfortable in speedos or regular jammers. I then took a quick cold rinse to refresh my body and walked outside. I walked along the side of the pool to the other end where the diving blocks were located.
I set myself on one of the diving blocks and looked up at the timer clock in the middle of the building and waited till the hand hit zero. I then dived into the pool and swam. I imagined it like it was a race, a 100m swim and I was in the lead. The stands were filled and I could barely see my opponents because of how fast I was going. I reached the opposite end of the pool signifying I was at 50m. I flipped and pushed back with my feet torpedoing to the end then switched to freestyle once I started to slow down. My arms were swinging and my legs were kicking in unison. I was a machine that couldn’t be stopped. I saw the end of the pool and reached for it. I then snapped out of my imagination once I touched the wall. I looked up at the time and saw that the hand had already gone around one minute and was already at the twenty second mark. One minute and twenty seconds, it wasn’t my best but I guess it was pretty good, I can do better. I trained for about a few hours until I realised that I missed dinner. I stopped and climbed out of the pool. I walked over to the changing rooms and sighed. I guess it’s instant ramen tonight.
I reached the front of my dorm and the time was around 7:30pm and dinner was at 7:00pm so i guess I missed it by a long shot. I put my keys through the door lock and opened it. I came inside and saw that Taj seemed to be drawing something on an IPad and had a bunch of paper on his desk. He was so concentrated on what he was doing that he didn’t realise that I had entered. I looked over his shoulder and saw him sketching some sort of comic page onto his IPad. He was really good at drawing and he seemed to have a very mature anime style. Just by looking at that one page it seemed interesting. I looked around his desk and saw other pages spread all over his desk he was using for references.
I put my hands on his shoulders.
“BOO!”
“OH MY GOD!” He screamed and turned around to look at me.
“You piece of shit I think I had a heart attack!”
I bursted out laughing and almost started crying. He just sat there and stared at me like he was going to kill me. I calmed down after a while and looked back at him.
“I’m sorry it’s just there was a perfect opportunity so I took it!”
“Ok fine I guess it was a good scare,”
“By the way you’re really good at drawing do you think I could read a few pages of what seems to be a comic you’re making?”
He then realised that all his comic references were spread out on the desk and his work was exposed. He quickly turned around and gathered his pages together and chucked them in one of his drawers and hit the off button on his IPad.
“Never! It’s probably not even that good,”
“Oh come on! It looked really interesting!”
“No!”
“Ok fine! By the way have you eaten anything?”
“No I skipped dinner,”
“Guess we both can have instant ramen!”
“Yep!”
He gave me an innocent smile and then turned around to finish packing up his stuff. I grabbed out two cups of instant ramen out of one of my drawers and a jug. I went inside the bathroom and filled the jug with some water plugged into a power point next to bed and waited for it to boil.
When I was finished I asked Taj if he wanted chopsticks or a spoon and fork, he said chopsticks. We then ate.
“Well how is it?”
“Pretty good for instant ramen!”
“Thanks,”
“Your welcome!”
He continued to eat and it was kinda, adorable?
