Today's review is Prometheus Reanimated, I have been reading Prometheus Reanimated for a very long time, and it is one of my favorite novels. Prometheus Reanimated is a story primarily based on two characters (Mr. Graves and Mr. Gears) as they try to solve two mysteries in Arkham, Massachusetts during the early 1900s.
This novel is one of the most professional novels I have ever read on Tapas. Sarah Massey’s writing on each page is very intricate and very well thought out. The style of writing which Sarah Massey uses (old fashioned dialogue) helps portray the 1920’s-1930’s aspect of this novel. Writing in any form of old dialogue can be difficult, not many people know how to make themselves sound historical in their writing. It is obvious when reading Prometheus Reanimated, Sarah knows how to use this form of writing to her advantage, and she does this very well. There was an issue in the writing which was due to several grammar oversights, which confused me, but never took away from the story’s energy.
While the writing in this novel is incredible, there is a small hitch in the description. The first line in the summary is cliché, being “You shouldn't believe everything you read but then again maybe you should.” This is a line that is trying to add tension to the writing, but as it is very commonly used, it tapers the attention of the reader. Clichés take away from the quality of writing. For Prometheus Reanimated's description, it did affect my interest in the story. This sentence does not add to the already well-made summary, which brings both tension and excitement all on its own. Without this cliché, I believe that the description would be exquisite.
Sarah Massey has created a beautifully intricate fantasy world with characters that have such depth to them. One of Sarah’s characters, Mrs. Upton, briefly appeared in this story, but quickly one could understand her. Her kindness and her troubling backstory made her loyal to Dr. Halsey. She protected his items from people she believed would like to frame Dr.Halsey for these murders. I found Mrs. Upton a very complicated character even though she only appeared for a few pages. Sarah Massey pulls all of her characters to life and makes the reader understand them through their actions and thoughts. Through her beautiful writing, you can see that Sarah has thought through every aspect of every character she writes. It is this attention to detail that makes a story worth reading.
Something I found interesting was the use of the third person in Prometheus Reanimated. Sarah Massey did an excellent job using the third person in her novel. One thing I have seen many times on the Tapas Forum is a poor use of the third person. I have seen many people use it as a device to explain what is happening in their story, not showing the story's progression from different angles. Sarah used the third person as a storytelling device, she pulled her readers into her story. She used the third person to show her characters' emotions from their perspective, which is something not many writers can do well.
One of my favorite things about this novel was the pacing. (Yes, a very nerdy thing to enjoy) A problem new writers face is the need to continue the story quickly so they can get to their climax. This is why many writers end up writing about seven thousand words when they are trying to write a full-on novel. Sarah Massey wrote with such subtle grace that it took a realistic amount of time before the main action began. For a story to seem more realistic, it needs to have time to stir the excitement of the reader, the reader needs to have a basic knowledge of the main characters. Sarah Massey showed her readers who her characters were. She let the readers sympathize with them, then she began the action, which allowed her readers to understand why the characters acted the way that they did. Sarah Massey masterfully paced her novel, which inevitably created a fantastic story.
Prometheus Reanimated has been something I have especially enjoyed reading recently. Sarah Massey completely immersed me into her book of glamour engines and the mysterious Society of Modern Literature. She is an incredible writer with a fantastic imagination, I hope to see much more of her writing in the future. I am very excited to read much more of this novel. I whole-heartedly recommend this novel to anyone.
