“You look stunning, Beth,” Izzy said, smiling at their step sister.
“I just can’t believe we finished in time! And with only a tiny bit of padding, too,” Beth squealed.
The two were just finishing up in Beth's room after quickly returning home from the tailor’s. Izzy was finishing up fixing Beth’s straight hair into a low, braided bun while Beth completed her makeup.
“There,” Izzy smiled as they placed the crystal hair piece around the bun with the flower teasingly poking above the complicated braids. “Now it’s time to show Chandra.”
Beth squealed. “There’s no way she can say no once she sees me!”
“I must admit, Beth. You look far better in this gown than I ever would.”
“I do agree.” Beth gleamed up at Izzy from the vanity stool. She took one last look at her delicate makeup of slightly rosy cheeks, shimmering blue eye shadow, and pale pink lipstick before standing and heading out of Izzy’s room.
The two made their way down, Izzy significantly in front of Beth, to the foyer where Chandra and Tiffany were waiting.
Tiffany looked beautiful, if a little over done, just as always. Her full, green, silk gown with court-length train, nicely bustled, split open in the front to show intricate floral embroidery on the white underskirt. The embroidery continued up the bodice. The bodice had no boning in it, but it was clear that Tiffany was wearing a very tight corset underneath as there was no way anyone’s breasts could defy gravity like that without some type of help and her waist was almost inhumanly small. The deep sweetheart neckline was accentuated by her off-the-shoulder flutter sleeves. Her golden hair was piled high on her head with a few, strategically placed curls accentuating her face and shoulders. She paired her dress with pale pink gloves that reached up to her biceps, a delicate gold choker with a pink pendant, matching earrings, and heels made of green silk, embroidered in pink, with a three-inch heel. Her makeup was heavy-handed with rosy cheeks, a deep pink smokey eye, overdrawn lips in a flattering mauve color, and lashes thick enough to rest a pen on.
Chandra was dressed in a more matronly way, though she was clearly also dressed to attract a new husband. Her navy blue velvet gown only had a small amount of puff to the skirt, instead falling nearly straight to the floor with an intricate bustle and a delicate sweep train. The bodice sported a stiffly structured corset ending just above the bust line and the fabric continuing up to her neck where it ended in a deeply split bateau neckline. The Juliet sleeves were tastefully gathered at the top and ended at bracelet length, to show off a delicate, gold bracelet on her right wrist and simple, white silk gloves. She passed up on a necklace to wear large, gold chandelier earrings that nearly reached her shoulders. Her hair was tastefully pulled up into an intricate bun at the crown of her head. She completed the ensemble with a pair of black leather shoes with a tasteful one inch heel.
“You two look just stunning,” Izzy said to announce their arrival. “Perfect to snatch some husbands.”
“What on earth do you think you’re doing,” Chandra practically spat. “We are leaving and you're wearing your gardening clothes?!”
“Yes, but look at what Beth is wearing.”
This was Beth’s cue to descend the staircase. Tiffany let out a startled gasp and Chandra’s mouth fell open. She turned her stare back to Izzy.
“What did you do,” she whispered angrily.
“My friend owed me a favor, and just so happens he’s also the tailor’s apprentice.” Izzy beamed at their step mother. “Doesn’t Beth look stunning?”
Beth’s smile was starting to falter. She was certain her mother would still make her stay home.
“Please, Momma,” Beth quietly pleaded. “We worked so hard today to make this work. I’ve never looked this pretty before!”
Chandra’s anger faltered at her daughter’s plea. “Of course you look gorgeous, sweetheart,” Chandra cooed. “But you are still not of marrying age.”
“I’m not trying to get married, Momma. I just want to go and meet some new people, see the palace, and enjoy the grandeur. This might be my only chance!” Beth’s eyes started to tear up.
The tears worked and Chandra’s anger at Izzy visibly cracked. “Well, it would be a waste not to use that gown, now that you’ve made it unwearable for Bella,” Chandra said before turning to Izzy. “You got out of the ball, but do not expect that this will not come with some form of punishment! I don’t know what yet, but it will not be pretty!”
“I’m absolutely terrified,” Izzy sarcastically returned. “Now, you better hurry or you’ll be late!”
Izzy gleefully ushered their family out the door to the waiting coach. They waved them off with an over-sized grin plastered on their face. Once the coach was out of sight, Izzy skipped back into the house, hastily closed and locked the door, and dashed upstairs.
