Rina's home life became even worse in the next few days. They were mad at her one moment and the next they wanted to chat.
Of course, chatting with her didn't seem to include her saying anything. Naive as she was, she still tried to express her opinions and was either ignored, misunderstood or humiliated.
She didn't know why she even tried but somewhere deep down she wanted them to acknowledge her. There was a need in her heart for these people to at least once listen to her and hear what she had to say, but all was in vain.
It seemed to her that they simply didn't think of her having any opinions even when she tried to express them. That made her angry with herself because she really needed to speak, she was generally a very talkative person, but she had no one to talk with.
When she tried to speak with her friends or her family, they shut her up or talked over her or even worse just didn't hear her. Even though that kept happening she couldn't help but try from time to time but it was no use.
They were bound to shut her down no matter how good her argument or opinion was. It was a bit frustrating for her, but she got used to it, it was nothing new.
It was so difficult for her to crave the attention and warmth, and to know she would never get it, but she put it in the back of her mind in a little box with a warning label "DO NOT OPEN".
Instead of thinking about all her needs and the way her family treated her, she tried to focus on more practical problems she had to solve, such as her small invisibility problem.
On the one hand, it felt good to help someone out, but she still wasn't comfortable with something she wasn't able to explain.
All her life she was taught to put things into certain categories, to be able to better understand them. Now she was faced with something that she couldn't put into any specific category, that she couldn't explain, and she was terrified.
Even after everything she had been through, she could honestly say that nothing frightened her more than the thought that she couldn't control her own body.
After all the injustices she had lived through she was always happy that she could at least rely on her body and her mind. If she didn't rely on anyone else she couldn't be betrayed, she couldn't be hurt.
Suddenly, her whole world was turned upside down. She could no longer trust her own body and that hurt her more than it would any other person.
Other people had someone they could support them, but at that moment Rina only had herself, and she couldn't even control her own body. It made her so sad but at the same time so angry with herself, with the world.
Why was fate so cruel to her? First, her dad, then she had to leave her great-grandma behind, her own family treated her like a stranger, and finally she had to deal with the problem she didn't even understand, alone.
Shaking her head, she tried to get rid of those thoughts and regain focus.
Once she was back in her room, she pulled out the books she bought and started doing some basic research about how normal blood should look under the microscope.
She decided that would be her first step because she already understood how to use the microscope, she just needed to check a few things to make sure she knew exactly how the blood should look like.
It felt ridiculous to her that she was even doing that, but she didn't think she had a choice.
She had never broken the rules before, but having enough of a reason to do so made her feel better.
Thinking about it the whole night she decided to wait for the lab to be empty out and then to turn invisible and sneak in. Turning invisible on command was still a big challenge, but she thought she could do it.
After that, she would draw some blood and then check if everything was normal with her blood cells.
If she found everything normal, she would move to another possibility, the supernatural one. But if there was something wrong with her blood, she thought she would have to go see a doctor no matter how strange they would find her.
She didn't want to be a guinea pig, but she couldn't see any other solution. It was impossible for her to deal with that alone, but she never planned on telling her family about it, except for great-grandma, if she ever saw her again.
The next day, school was relatively normal, as much as it could be for Rina, but she was still very restless.
After the classes ended, she hid until she turned invisible with slightly less effort than before.
Upon becoming invisible, she slowly sneaked towards the lab, although she knew no one could see her. It was just strange for her, although she was metaphorically invisible all the time, she couldn't get used to the fact that she was physically invisible.
Once she got to the lab she took everything she needed and pricked her finger squeezing a huge drop of blood just to be on the safe side.
She prepared everything and put the blood under the microscope.
Just as she was about to take a look, she thought she heard something, so she turned around but the only thing she saw was an empty room.
Confused, she went back to work ignoring the sensation that she was watched.
It was impossible for anyone to notice her or to be there, so she decided to ignore it.
That was until she felt a hand on her shoulder, on her invisible shoulder at that.
