“Well don’t you two look cozy?” The sound of Michael’s voice startles me awake, which in turn startles Will awake, too. Will’s legs were tangled in mine, one arm thrown over his eyes while another was lying on my stomach. He grimaces, sitting up and scooting away from me, but remains on the hospital bed.
I pull the thin blanket up to my chin, scowling up at Mikey. “Why did ya have to go and wake us up? I was comfy!” He ignores my whines, stooping down low to look me in the eyes.
“So… you’re feeling okay, I’m guessing? Are you experiencing any nausea? Sore throat? Pain or soreness? Fatigue or numbness?”
I interrupt him before he can list any more symptoms, nodding and reassuring him by saying, “I’m fine, bro,” with a smile. Before Mikey’s face can crumple as Will’s did, before he could break down at the fear and stress I had caused him, I sit up, throwing my arms around his neck. I ignore the flaky blood that coats his neck and face, as well as his shirt, quietly mumbling, “You saved me, Mike. You’re the reason I didn’t die. Thank you.”
“What are best friends for, kid?” He pats me on the back, pulling away to study my face once more.
Will remains silent, staring at the blanket.
“So… should I leave you guys? I wasn’t interrupting anything, was I?” Michael smirks, throwing a glance Will’s way.
“Besides our wonderful nap? No, I wouldn’t say you were interrupting. We had our ‘oh so touching moment’ when I had woken up. Isn’t that right, Will?” I grin at him, and he finally looks up, a crooked smile on his face.
“Well, we never did finish what we had started outside of the gas station…” He gives me a look, one that sends hot fire up my spine and makes my skin flush red. I sputter, my usual cool immediately leaving me.
Michael laughs, slapping Will on the back. “Oh man, I haven’t seen him this flustered since the time he tried to ask that girl to a dance in middle school!” Mike is cracking up, and Will gives me a grin.
I cough, quickly changing the subject. “Anyway, when can we leave? We still have to find and question the target.” I cross my arms, waiting for the two to compose themselves.
“What, you just got shot and now you’re ready to be up and off again?” Will seems surprised, as if he hadn’t heard of my reputation back at H.Q.
I shrug, looking over at Mikey as I wait for an answer. He, of course, already knew that no argument could be made to get me to rest longer, so he didn’t waste his breath. “The doctor might need a little convincing, but I’m sure we can get you out tonight. I dunno why you always heal so fast, but with the surgery and your weird voodoo magic, you seem to be all healed. Just give me a sec, guys, I’ll be back in a couple minutes. Hopefully.” Michael quickly leaves, the door clicking shut behind him.
