Chapter 6: Controlled Shifting

Chapter 6: Controlled Shifting

Jul 16, 2020

I'm Back Everybody! (Mason's POV)

“Good morning sleepy-head” Blake sing songs to me from the window sill. I groan and throw my pillow at his head. He easily doges it. “C’mon, I’ve got to teach you how to shift and stay in control of your instincts. He pulls me out of bed despite my protests. I grumble as I grab clothes and head for the bathroom.

Once I'm showered and dressed, Blake leads me to the basement. Our basement is unfinished and all the walls are made out of cement. There are dead mice in the corners and it definitely doesn’t smell the greatest. “Okay, no window for you to escape out of or things to break!” Blake looked very proud of himself for thinking of this, and I have to admit, this really is a great Idea.

“Okay, now shift.” I will my body to shift and feel my body remold itself. I open my eyes and I’m much closer to the ground once again. I look up and see Blake standing there a bit worried, as though I was gonna attack him. I honestly wanted to pounce and it took all of me not to. Slowly, he reached his hand out to scratch me behind the ears and I was putty in his hands. I purred out in delight and rolled over onto my stomach, making him chuckle.

I was very content with the attention I was getting when I scent caught my nose. Abruptly I stood and slowly stalked towards the door of which we came from, sniffing at it. “Mason, I’m home!” It was Peyton! What was she doing back so early!? It was only noon. I turned back to Blake as he had yet to teach me how to shift back. He seemed to have caught the message because he bent down to my level and whispered in my ear; “Just imagine your human self and imagine switching back. I imagined myself and felt my body retake its form. I still have no idea how I keep my clothes.

“Stay here.” I whisper to Blake as I make my way back upstairs. Peyton was in the kitchen texting on her phone. There were bags of groceries sitting on the counter. She looked up from her phone as I entered the kitchen. “Heyy little bro. Do you think you could help me put all of this away? I got to go home early since I haven't had a day off in nearly a month so I went grocery shopping on my way back!” Peyton seemed totally relieved and worn out. I unpacked the groceries myself after forcefully convincing Peyton she needed to shower and rest. At this point she was gonna work herself to death. Heh, death. It’s kind of funny to think about, but I’m an immortal being now, aren’t I? Peyton was going to grow older, maybe find someone to settle down with and have a few kids. Eventually she would die, while I would stay here. The thought made me sad so I tried my best to think of other things. Like, why I haven't been craving blood yet. Or what’s gonna happen once I do? Would I attack Peyton? Or maybe one of my friends? If I do it in broad daylight, which I seem to despise more and more with each passing day, I’ll go to jail for sure. Or maybe I’ll be experimented on.

I was abruptly pulled from my thoughts when I heard the basement stair creaking. Blake peaked his head out from the door, looked around and whispered “Is it safe to come out?” I nodded, putting the last of the groceries away and going to flop onto the couch, turning Netflix on. scrolled through the categories for a while before deciding on Coraline. That movie always gave me the heeby jeebys as a kid. I curled up in a blanket to watch the movie. Around five minutes in, the couch sunk down and I looked over at Blake. He had kicked his shoes off and was now sitting criss cross applesauce on the couch. He looked completely intrigued by the movie and that made me chuckle. I fell asleep near the end, while Blake still seemed wide awake. It seemed horror movies were his thing. And don't even try denying that Coraline was scary as hell. Well, maybe not hell, but what would I know? I've never been to hell. heh.

This is the first of three books in this series.

19 year old Blake is a vampire and trying to start a guild. He's hanging out in his usual area, when he smells something sweet. Turning the corner happens to be 17 year old Mason. Completely human. Or so they thought. Maybe these two had met somewhere a long time ago. But the question is...where?
