“I thought you were dead!” Anna screamed.
“It’s called acting, sweetheart,” Alex cackled.
Alpha was on the other side of the destroyed infirmary. We ran as fast as we could, disappearing into the woods. Alpha followed us, catching up quickly.
“Stop!” I yelled. We had reached what we thought was a clearing but was actually a thirty-foot cliff with lava at the bottom.
“Hold up!” Jack yelled. We all stopped and stood there, looking into the cavern of lava.
“We’re screwed,” I said. Alpha was behind us, then there was a loud bang. Alex and Alpha had just caught up to us. Alex jumped off of Scar, and Scar and Alpha charged each other yet again. Alex walked towards us and pulled out his sword.
“Why won't you just die already?!” Jack demanded.
“Because I’m one of the strongest people on this island,” Alex scoffed.
“Well, obviously. There are only, like, five people on the island, and we’re just kids, brilliant,” Lindsay taunted.
Alex had no words. “Uh...well...um...too bad!” He shouted eventually.
“Nice comeback,” I laughed.
“Shut up, child!” Alex fumed.
“Oh my gosh! You know my general age! I guess I’ll just have to die now!" I pretended to faint.
Alex screamed in rage. “How dare you make fun of your superior!”
Lindsay burst out laughing. “Because an old guy hiding behind a dinosaur is so much better than us!”
This is when Alex lost it. He ran up to me and pushed me into a tree.
“Ow! What was that for?” I asked, but before I could get a reply, I looked over and saw Scar and Alpha still battling each other. They locked heads and Alpha was nearing the edge of the cliff. Scar was beating him. Scar was pushing Alpha closer and closer to the edge. Then, with one final shove, Alpha fell. It felt like someone had punched me in the gut. I ran to the edge to see him hit the lava. He had just fallen a hundred feet into boiling lava. He screeched in agony before he went under.
“NO!” I yelled.
“Finally. That stupid dinosaur of yours is dead," Alex said laughing. I kept looking into the lava. Then the pack of Tyrannoceratops tried to attack Scar, but he was too strong. He either threw them off the cliff or ate them. Scar was now looking at Alex.
“Good job, my creature,” Alex said. “And kids, I will see you later." He mounted Scar, and they left.
“Alpha is… gone?” Jack asked.
“Yes," I whispered.
“How could a Tyrannoceratops die like that?” Jack asked.
“I… don’t know," I replied.
Jack shook his head, trying to clear his mind. “I have an idea on how we can get rid of Alex."
“Okay. So what is this big idea of yours?”
“A bomb. A small one that can destroy even the strongest of people,"
“How will we get one and how will we power it?”
“And with five of the rarest gemstones in the world. Benitoite, Blue Diamond, Red Diamond, Emerald, and a White Emerald. Each has a certain chemical. Those chemicals, when put together, will create one of the strongest explosions in the world. I’ve already made a bomb with five slots, one for each gem," Jack finished.
“How do we get these gemstones?” Lindsay asked.
“Certain creatures will have them in their possession. Probably the strongest ones. Like, the Indosougatus may have one. Scar may have one. I don’t know which others have them," Jack replied.
“We need to defeat Scar then. Right?” I asked.
“Maybe. Or maybe it doesn't have a gem," Jack replied.
“Okay. We need to kill the Indosougatus then," Lindsay said.
“Yes. Maybe. I don’t know. We just need to find them. I’ll keep them in this for now," Jack said as he pulled out a small sphere with five slots, each one named. There was a bigger slot in the middle named White Emerald.
We decided to walk around to see if there was anywhere the Indosougatus was hiding. We made it to the cage where we thought it was hiding. We went inside. The cage was wrecked and there were bones everywhere.
“Keep moving. We need to find one of the gems," Jack said.
We walked for a while, but then reached the end of the fence.
“Dang it. A dead end,” Lindsay said. Well, she said it loud enough to make something come towards us. We heard a stick break and we turned around. We saw glowing yellow eyes. We had found the Indosougatus - er, it had found us.
“Hello, Jack. How are you today?” It asked. Jack froze.
“What do you want?” Jack said.
“Just wanted to know why you are in my home,” the dinosaur said.
“We want the gem. There! In your tail!” Jack yelled.
“You’ll have to kill me first!” It yelled and jumped on top of Jack.
“Get… off… me!” Jack yelled. Lindsay grabbed her bow and started firing shots, but the arrows harmlessly bounced off the dinosaur’s scales.
“Jack!” Lindsay yelled. She ran up, grabbed Jack’s sword, and stabbed the creature right in the back. It squeaked in pain but turned around to face Lindsay.
“Hey! Big head! Look right here!” Jack yelled. It turned and Jack was able to kick it right in the chest. It flew backward about 5 feet.
“You can’t hurt short kids," Jack said. It looked back at Jack, Lindsay, and me and growled at us. It pounced again, and Lindsay threw Jack his sword and he thrust it right into the creature’s chest. This time, it didn’t squeal. Its lifeless body hung on the sword.
Jack pushed the body off the sword. He went to the tail and forcefully pulled off the gem. It was the Blue Diamond. One gem down, four to go. Then the creature we thought was dead did something completely unexpected. It snapped its head back and grabbed one of Jack’s legs and pulled him into the trees. Luckily, Jack still had his sword in his hand and was able to stab the dinosaur enough to make it let him go.
“I’m going to feel that in the morning,” He sighed. Lindsay ran over to him and gasped when she saw his leg.
“Jeez. Didn’t know a dinosaur had that much strength. We need to find a way to bandage this before you bleed out,” she said, sounding very worried. The wound must have been worse than it looked. I still couldn’t get the thought out of my head that Lindsay could be in love with Jack. That didn’t make sense to me. I shoved the thought out. I’d deal with it later. But still! He was a coward, he was short, and he was weak. He wasn’t very brave, and he wasn’t that smart. I just don’t know who could love someone like that.
We made it to the visitor center and decided to get some sleep.
I woke up to the sound of the door closing. It was two AM. I went to the bathroom. When I got back though, Jack and Lindsay were gone. I started looking for them. Then, I saw them sitting outside, looking up at the stars.
“Jack. I’ve been meaning to tell you something,” Lindsay said quietly.
“What?” Jack asked.
“I… I’m in love with you,” Lindsay admitted.
I kept eavesdropping for a while. They confessed to each other. I would have barfed, had it not been the girl I was in love with talking to my best friend. Then Jack stood up, slowly and cautiously. He could stand, just not run or walk without assistance or something to hold onto. Lindsay leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. I froze, not wanting to watch but unable to look away. They wrapped their arms around each other and leaned even closer.
It felt like someone had punched me in the gut. I could see my face in the reflection of broken glass, and it had just looked like I had just witnessed a murder. I stepped away from the window. I couldn’t handle this anymore. I walked into my room and sat on my bed. I couldn’t sleep for hours.
I woke up again at 6 and saw them laying across the room from each other. I knew what happened that night. They probably thought that nobody had been watching, but they were wrong.
“Jack. Lindsay. Up and at it,” I said. But this time, I wasn’t yelling like normal. It felt like nothing would ever be normal after what happened last night. Lindsay stumbled out of bed and towards the bathroom. Jack stood up and walked over to me with the assistance of giant sticks that he sometimes used as crutches.
“Yeah. I’m up," Jack said.
“What the heck is wrong with you?” I demanded.
“What do you mean?” Jack replied.
“Come outside with me and I’ll explain,” I told him in a voice that gave no room for objection. We both walked outside.
“You kissed her last night. Lindsay!” I all but shouted at him.
“First off, she kissed me!”
“You kissed her back! I told you I loved her, and you kissed her back!”
“Secondly, it’s not my fault that she loves me and not you!” He yelled. I stopped talking. My stomach hurt. She didn’t love me. She loved him, that idiot!
“I hate you. I HATE YOU!” I screamed at him.
“What? Was I going to steal your lover! No! She loves me! Not you!” Jack yelled back at me.
“Guys? What’s happening? I heard someone shouting,” Lindsay walked outside, yawning.
“You kissed Jack last night. WHY!?” I yelled at her.
“What? So? How does that affect you?” She asked.
“I- I’m… I’m in love with you,” I murmured.
“Well, I’m sorry, but I don’t feel the same about you. I don’t love you, and I never will!” Lindsay yelled. Jack and I froze.
“What?” I asked.
“You heard me! I love Jack, not you!” Lindsay replied. I stopped glaring at Jack and looked at her.
“Why?” I asked again. I felt like a two-year-old saying ‘But, why?’ I hate feeling like that.
“How do you expect me to explain? I just plain don’t!” Lindsay said.
“Fine. I’ll just leave then because, apparently, nobody wants me here,” I said.
“Wait! I never said I wanted you to leave!” Jack yelled at me, but it was too late. I was already walking away and didn’t turn back.
I didn’t stop until I got to the beach on the other side of the island. I finally got to the beach and sat down, wishing a helicopter would come and rescue me and only me. I hated Jack right then. I wanted to shove him right into Scar’s mouth!
I started crying, not the broken arm kind of cry, a depressed cry. Like my entire world had ended, which it felt like it had.
I sat down on a smooth rock and looked out on the ocean. The island was huge. I didn’t even know how long I had been walking for. I stood up from the rock and started walking towards the water. Then, I noticed something. It looked like a scrap of a helicopter, but it was larger. I flipped the piece of metal over and saw two words right next to each other. The scrap said Jurassic Kingdom and had the skeleton of the T. Rex on it. It was a part of a jeep. I looked around for any other scraps to see if it was another piece. I couldn’t find anything else. No more metal, no glass, no doors, no nothing.
I gave up and sat down on a rock. At least, I thought it was a rock, but it was way hotter than a normal rock. I wiped off the leaves and vines. It was a jeep! The paint was coming off, but I could tell that it was in good shape. I was surprised by how good it looked though it hadn’t been used in a year. The key was on the floorboard, so I put it into the ignition. On the fifth time of me turning the key, it sparked and started working.
“Oh my goodness! It actually works!” I said to myself. I couldn’t wait to tell Anna, Lindsay, and Jack. Then I remembered what had happened that night. I kept looking at the wheel. I pushed down the gas pedal, and it shot forwards. I pushed down the brake pedal. It was working like it did a year ago. I drove down the dirt road, which was now filled with leaves and grass. I drove until I reached the park. It had looked the same when Scar and Alpha fought each other for the first couple of times.
I looked around to see if there were any dinosaurs. I didn’t see any at first, but then I saw what looked to be a herd of Dreadnoughts, but then, I saw plates on their backs and spikes on their tails. It was a herd of Stegonoughts! One of the biggest hybrids on the island.
I got out of the jeep to watch them pass. I didn’t see the little one until it ran into me. I kneeled down to pet it. Its mother wasn’t happy. I saw the mama charging at me, so I jumped back into the jeep. Spikes landed right next to my face. The mama then flipped over the jeep.
I was stuck underneath the two-thousand-pound jeep.
Then I heard something. A voice.
“Kyle! Over here!” the voice yelled. I recognized it immediately. The voice belonged to the one and only Jack Silvercauther.
