Jack and Alex charged. Their swords clanged against each other and Jack pushed Alex multiple times. Lindsay and Anna showed up.
“What is happening?!” Lindsay demanded.
“The final fight. Hopefully,” I replied.
“C’mon Jack!” Lindsay yelled. Jack turned his head. The worst move he could have made. Alex kicked Jack right in the stomach and sent him flying.
“I’m going to feel that in the morning," Jack said.
Jack got back up to his feet and charged at Alex. Alex kicked Jack again, harder this time. Jack went flying again. Alex kicked Jack again. This time, Jack could barely stand. He fell.
“Time to finish this!” Alex yelled.
“Wait!” Jack yelled at Alex.
“What?” He replied.
“There is one rule you forgot in fighting."
Alex laughed. “And what might that be?”
“You can’t hurt the shorter one."
“What? That makes no se-”
Jack grabbed his sword and stabbed Alex right in the chest. Alex’s face went gray and he closed his eyes for the last time.
“That was easier than I thought it would be,” Jack said, standing up and wiping the sweat off of his hands.
“That’s what you thought!” Alex said.
“What? I thought I just killed you!” Jack replied.
“You thought I wouldn’t be prepared? Silly child, there is a bronze plate on my chest."
Alex grabbed Jack’s sword and threw him across the pavement.
“Jack! No!” Lindsay screamed. Jack crawled backward, so we could see his face. He had a huge gash on his right cheek and it was gushing blood.
“Alex. We can talk about this, right?” Jack tried to negotiate.
“Not in a million years,” Alex replied. He swung down his sword, but Jack was able to dodge it by millimeters.
“Chill out!” Jack yelled.
“Don’t talk to me like I’m your pet!” Alex shouted back. Alex swung down on the other side, missing Jack by another millimeter.
“Just stay still!” Alex roared at Jack.
“Never!” Jack yelled at Alex. Alex swung down a third time. He missed Jack’s head, the sword coming down on his arm instead, leaving a long, deep gash.
“Chill out! That hurts!” Jack moaned in pain.
“Does it look like I care? No! Because I don’t care if it hurts or not. You are going to die today one way or another!” Alex yelled at Jack in the voice of a madman, one defeated far too many times. One that would never back down.
Suddenly, Lindsay appeared behind him, having somehow gotten a hold of a sword.
“I used to hate that people always overlooked me. Now I realize that it’s actually a blessing,” she snarled as she held the sword against his throat.
A drop of blood slid down, glistening in the faint light.
“C’mon Lindsay. You’re better than this!” Alex said.
“Since when am I better than this? My chance to kill you, once and for all, and you expect me to throw it away?” Lindsay asked in disbelief. I realized that Lindsay was far braver than I thought.
“You don’t want to do this. I know it. Deep inside your heart. I know what really happened the night your parents died in that fire. You started the fire,” Alex said, trying to manipulate Lindsay.
“How… wait… what…” Lindsay tried to form a complete sentence.
“I watched the whole thing unfold. You put gasoline on the house and threw a match on it," Alex continued. Lindsay was frozen. She didn’t move. She just stared right into Alex’s deep blue eyes.
“Join me, and you will never be afraid of what might happen when the police find out."
To my surprise, Lindsay started laughing. “That story is as riddled with holes as you’re about to be. I was actually at a friend’s house."
Sarcasm crept into her voice. “But thank you for that not at all painful memory."
We’d all been too absorbed in the conversation to notice Alex’s hand snaking across the ground. His fingers closed around a shard of broken glass, which he brought up to Lindsay’s face, slashing across it.
She cried out, letting go of Alex and clutching her wounded cheek. Blood was already seeping between her fingers. Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the blood. Anna and I ran to help her.
“Now you have messed up,” Jack said as he grabbed his sword and smashed the butt of the blade into Alex’s head. Alex fell to the ground and Jack caught him in a chokehold. “Now, shut up and die already!” Jack yelled at Alex.
“I... will… never… die… easily!” Alex tried to get out.
“Yes, you will. After what you did to Lindsay, you’ll wish you’d have never come to this island in the first place,” Jack replied. He tightened his arm more and more with each passing second. Alex grabbed the same shard of glass and cut Jack’s arm with it.
“Ow!” Alex took advantage of the situation and twisted out of Jack’s arm.
“You finally decided to let go of me. Now, I will leave,” Alex said.
“Not today, you won’t!” Jack yelled and charged at Alex.
“Bye-bye,” Alex said as he threw a gas bomb down and disappeared.
“Where did he even get that?” I choked out once the smoke cleared.
“Don’t know. Wherever he got it must have been a smoke bomb store or something like that,” Jack said, sarcastically.
“Jack?” Lindsay asked.
“Yeah, Lindsay?” Jack replied.
Jack turned around, and Lindsay kissed him right on the lips, again. I averted my eyes.
“What was that?” Jack asked.
“For sticking up for me,” Lindsay replied.
We walked back to the bunker and got inside. We got the sink to work as well, so we helped Lindsay wash off the blood and dried tears.
I went to get towels, but I stopped in front of Jack’s room. He was looking at a picture frame, which I guessed was the picture of his parents. Maybe he taped it back together.
“If only you were alive,” Jack said to the picture. I kept watching Jack until Anna yelled at me to get the towels. I ran, got them, put them next to the sink, and went back to Jack’s room.
“You okay, buddy?” I asked him.
“Eh. I’m not okay. I miss my family. They would be so proud of me right now. I finally got a girlfriend, I got friends, and I have survived on an island teeming with dinosaurs for nearly two years,” Jack sighed.
“Same here,” I replied, trying to be helpful. We walked out of Jack’s room and saw Lindsay cooking lunch.
“Hope you’re hungry!” Lindsay said. She had a scar on her face, but it wasn’t as bad as we all thought it had been. Head wounds bleed a lot. I remembered reading that somewhere.
We were all hungry, but we didn’t know what Lindsay was making.
“Chicken. The type that I make, not the one Alex made,” Lindsay said.
“Hopefully it’s better than Alex’s,” Jack groaned. Even though Jack and Lindsay were together, Jack still didn’t like Lindsay’s cooking.
“You better enjoy it then,” Lindsay replied.
“I thought you weren’t supposed to trust a skinny chef,” Jack grumbled under his breath.
“Starve, then,” Lindsay replied offhandedly.
“Fine. I’ll eat it,” Jack replied. The chicken was actually really good. Probably because it had been the first good food we had had in a while. We ate lunch and relaxed for a couple of hours. It had gotten a little bit warmer outside, so Jack went to practice with his sword.
“Guys. You might want to come out here,” Jack said. We all hurried outside, where it had started snowing again, despite the warm weather only moments before.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Jack Silvercauther and his team of losers,” someone said. We could see a figure in the distance, but we couldn’t tell who it was.
“Who are you!?” Jack yelled.
“I am only a figment of your imagination, and your nightmares,” The person said.
“What do you mean by that?” Jack asked.
“I am your worst nightmare."
“Prove it!”
“Fine,” The person walked out of the shadows.
It was Seth.
He was standing about 20 feet across from Jack.
“Seth? You... died. I saw you die!” Jack yelled at Seth.
“I told you before. I am just a figment of your imagination and your worst nightmare."
Jack grabbed his sword and got into his attack stance.
“Two can play this game,” Seth said as he grabbed something out of his pocket. It was a… stick?
Yep. A stick. He broke the stick in half and the left side grew out a sword and the other side he put back into his pocket.
“Oh, it’s on," Jack said.
Lindsay grabbed his arm. “Don’t die," she commanded.
“I’ll try not to,” Jack replied.
Jack and Seth charged. Seth got the first injury when Jack sliced him in the leg. Then Jack was cut pretty badly in the chest.
“C’mon, Jack! Just give up already!” Seth said.
“Not in a million years!” Jack yelled back. Their swords clinging sounded like a never-ending tolling bell. Jack looked weaker than Seth.
Seth grabbed the butt of his sword and jabbed it into Jack’s head. Jack fell to the ground.
“Jack!” I yelled. I wanted to run up there and kill Seth for Jack. The only problem was that I had nothing to defend myself with. I had a bow with no arrows. Besides, their duel had brought them too far away for me to reach them in time to save Jack. My best friend was going to die and I couldn’t do anything about it.
He was trying to crawl over to a tree, but the thick snow was stopping him.
“You stupid, short kid. I don’t even know why Lindsay loves you. All you are is a weak, little brat," Seth said to Jack.
“Well, at least I have a girlfriend! Who loves you? Oh, that’s right: nobody!” Jack yelled at him. I have to say, that was a good comeback.
“Do you ever just shut up?!” Seth demanded as he kicked Jack in the side.
“Ow!” Jack howled.
“Jack!” I could hear Lindsay shout.
“I’m ending this,” I said to Lindsay. I ran towards Jack, but Seth shoved me against a tree and held the sword up to my neck.
“Chill out!” I yelled at him.
I looked over and saw Jack getting up.
“I hope you like pain!” Jack yelled as he smashed the butt of his sword into the back of Seth’s head. Seth moaned in agony, falling to the ground.
“Gosh dang it! That hurt!” Seth yelled.
Seth stood up and grabbed his sword, which was on the ground next to him, having fallen from his hand.
“This has gone far enough!” Jack yelled as he ran up to Seth.
Jack clashed with Seth for a good four minutes, neither seeming to have an advantage, until Seth was too tired to stand.
“Fine. You win,” Seth said.
“Let me kill you if you’re really giving up,” Jack said to Seth.
“That would be too easy, wouldn’t it?” Seth replied.
“What do you mean?” Jack asked him.
“Goodbye, Jack,” Seth said as he smashed a smoke bomb to the ground, just like Alex had.
“NO!” Jack shouted, but it was too late. Seth had gotten away. That was one of the closest times that Jack had ever come to dying.
“What did Seth mean by saying that it would have been too easy to kill him? I still don’t understand,” Jack muttered.
“I have no idea. Maybe he was working with Alex,” I suggested.
“Wait. On the boat to the island, the person said that the Indosougatus could shapeshift into other things, like people. Could it be possible that, maybe, Seth… wasn’t really Seth?” Jack replied.
We all froze. We didn’t know what to say.
“Could be possible, but I’m pretty sure that dinosaurs can’t handle swords,”
“If Seth was actually the Indosagthus, it would have to have practiced for a while. It must have been really determined to be Seth, maybe to freak us out,” Lindsay suggested.
“That seems like a lot of work just to freak us out, unless…” Jack’s voice trailed off into silence.
“Unless what?” I demanded.
“Maybe it really does work for Alex,” Jack muttered, fear creeping into his voice.
“His army of dinosaurs must be much bigger than we thought,” Lindsay whispered, the determination in her voice blending with terror. “What do we do?”
“Guys? Look,” Anna said from behind us. We turned around to see at least twenty different hybrids advancing, with Alex standing in front of them, leading them.
“Looks like you met some of my friends already," Alex said with a smirk on his face.
“Like who? I didn’t know you had any friends,” Jack said, trying to anger him. We had learned that Alex always lets his rage make him careless and easier to defeat.
“Shut up, Silvercauther, before I let my dinosaurs eat you," Alex said, trying to control his anger.
“You know my last name! Awesome!” Jack taunted. “Now let’s see if you can figure out the first one. I’ll give you a hint: it starts with a ‘J’”
Alex lost it.
“SHUT! UP! I do know your first name. Your first name is Jack! What do you think I am, a dog? An idiot? You?” Alex demanded.
“Yep. You are definitely an idiot dog, just like me," Jack replied, trying not to die of laughter. Lindsay, Anna, and I couldn’t help letting out little chuckles.
“Spinomoloch! Come here!” Alex screamed. We figured that it was a Stiggy with spines, but it turned out that it was a Spinosaurus with the head of a Stiggy.
“Oh crap. We are dead," I said. It roared, and we all stepped backward a couple of feet.
“Chillax!” Anna yelled at her father.
“Daughter! Come here, now!” Alex said, trying to persuade Anna to go over to him.
“Never,” Anna replied coldly.
“You stupid child. You never listen to me. And by the way, you’re adopted," Alex said harshly.
“Really?” Anna asked.
“No, stupid. That was the point," Alex replied harshly once again.
“I’m going to kill him today," Jack said, determined.
“Really? Well, if you’re that confident, then come at me,” Alex challenged.
“I will. Wish me luck,” Jack said to us.
“Jack. If you die, I just want to say that I love you,” Lindsay said.
“Don’t worry about that. I won’t die,” Jack replied.
He started walking towards Alex. Then Alex snapped and the Indosagthus jumped in front of Jack.
“Hello, Jack. Good to see you again,” the dinosaur said.
“Good seeing you too. Now, it’s time for you to die once and for all,” Jack replied, readying his sword.
“I’m pretty sure that will be much harder than you think,”
“Well, let's see what happens then."
Jack and the Indosagthus ran at each other full speed.
