As Raphael leaves, I swing my legs over my bed’s ladder, hopping down. It looks like there’s one other enby in my cabin, except for Jacob, maybe.
“Hey, it’s Fyre, right?” I lean against the bed. “I didn’t get to introduce myself earlier.”
“Oh, yeah.” They got to the cabin at about the same time as me. “Uh… Camp?”
“Yeah! It’s probably an easy name to remember.” I smile, pausing for a second. “So, are you also nonbinary?”
“Yeah, I guess. Me and my siblings were raised gender-neutral, so that’s kinda what I grew up with.”
“Really? That’s so cool! They just tossed a gender on me at the hospital, and I went with that until a few years ago.” I half-joke.
They smile. “I was actually born at home. My mom’s a midwife, she helped deliver all of us.”
“Whoa. How many siblings do you have?”
“Uh, I’ve got an older sister, she’s at Camp Prism, too. And then I have six younger. Do you have siblings?”
“Yeah, but not that many. I have two younger sisters.”
Fyre nodded. “Cool. I gotta work on unpacking some stuff.”
“Oh, yeah, okay.” I nodded back hastily. “I should do that, too.”
They seem nice. I climb back up to my bed, sitting to look over the cabin.
The sisters, Calbridge and Leah, are by the dresser to my left, putting away their clothes. Jakyb and Fyre are to the right, having a calm conversation.
“Since I have the bottom bunk, it makes sense for me to use the bottom three drawers.” Fyre seems like a very straightforward person.
Gayforward. Queerforward? I smile to myself.
They’re very blunt, but Jacob doesn’t seem offended. He nods. “Um, okay, cool beans. And we can share the top of the dresser if you want. Put decorations or something.”
Fyre smiles. “Yeah, that’s a good idea.”
There’s a dresser between my bed and their bed that isn’t being used yet. I lower my bag to the ground, climbing down after it. If I don’t get exercise from running around camp, I’ll get it from this dang ladder.
“Hey, if anyone needs more room, I have some extra drawers.” I say loudly.
I don’t have enough clothes for six drawers, and no one else gets that many.
“I think we’re good.” Fyre replies, thankfully. It’s weird and quiet in the cabin as everyone is finishing unpacking.
I transfer my clothes quickly, since they were already folded in the suitcase. “Hey, do you guys wanna play a game?”
Jacob looks up. “Yeah, sure!”
I smile at him. “How ‘bout Never Have I Ever?”
Fyre raised one of their eyebrows. “Isn’t that usually a drinking game?”
What?
“Uh, yeah, maybe sometimes?” I shake my head. “I’ve always just played it the normal way.”
They blink at me. “What’s the normal way?”
“With the fingers?” Calbridge chimes in from behind me. “I’ve played it like that a couple times.”
“Yeah, with the fingers!” I nod at her. “You put a finger down if someone else has done it.”
“Wait, what?” She looks confused. “You put a finger down if you haven’t done it.”
“Yeah, that’s how I play it.” Jacob adds. “Except my family plays it with shots of hot sauce.”
“See, that makes sense!” Fyre exclaims. “There has to be stakes, or it’s not as fun.”
I sigh. “Maybe we could just sit around and chat? We can take turns asking a question for everyone to answer.”
“Sure, okay.” Calbridge says.
“Great!”
I sit down on the floor, leaning against my ladder. Jacob and Fyre sit next to each other in the middle of the floor. Calbridge sits by her bunk, and Leah slides off the bed to sit by her.
“Okay, I’ll go first!” I announce. “What’s your favorite movie?” I look over at Leah and her sister.
Calbridge furrows her eyebrows. “Hmm. Probably Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I like animated stuff.”
“Yeah, me too!” Jacob exclaims.
She smiles, and looks at Leah.
“Oh, um…” Leah chews on her lip. “I like the Harry Potter movies.”
“Cool, me too.” I look at Jacob.
He answers almost immediately. “I like the movie Ponyo.”
Fyre looks at him. “What’s it about? I haven’t heard of it.”
He lights up. “So, it’s a Studio Ghibli movie, and it’s about this, like, little fish princess who runs away from home and washes up on shore. She meets this boy, and he puts her in a bucket and names her Ponyo…” He pauses. “I don’t wanna spoil everything, but it’s really good. You should watch it sometime.”
They nod. “I’ll remember that. My favorite movie is Holes. It stayed accurate to the book.”
Jacob nods. “I read the book in school, but I haven’t watched the movie.”
“You should.”
He smiles. “I will if you watch Ponyo.”
“Deal.” Fyre is blunt, again, but they smile back.
I wait a moment, then say, “I really liked the movie C.R.A.Z.Y.”
“What’s it about?” Calbridge asks.
“It’s about a gay guy who’s struggling to accept his identity. It has that early 2000’s vibe, which I’m a big fan of. My mom had to skip a couple scenes, though.”
Fyre nods at me. “Sounds wild.”
I smile at them. “Do you want to ask the next question?”
“Yeah, sure.” They clear their throat.
