Rosie and I were colouring at the table when my phone rang. Pulling it out of my pocket I nearly screamed when I saw the caller I.D. It was for the prison where Nathan was being held. I wanted to ignore the damn thing but I couldn't. He had never called me in the entire time he was being held in the prison. Picking up the call I walked away from the table where Rosie was. She didn't need to hear anything that might be said. Putting the phone up to my ear I heard the automatic message saying I was getting a call from an inmate at the prison and push one to accept the call. Pushing the one I waited to hear that voice I still remembered to this day.
"Hello, I'm looking for Zev Martin."
"Speaking, who is this?"
"I'm unsure if I should be sad you don't recognize my voice Zev."
"Nathan Harris. What reason do you have to call this number, also how did you get it?"
"Still as bossy as you were."
"Hardly. You know any contact with me is against court orders, yes?"
"I am aware, I only wanted to let you know I'm sorry for trying to kill you. I've read you are doing well for yourself now. A doctor, not like you wanted, but a doctor no less."
"I am doing well. Yes, I'm a doctor now. I just heal minds instead of bodies."
"I'm happy you are well, anyways I'll go. I'm sure you don't want to speak to me any longer."
"Thank you for your call, Nathan. Please get your life together and have a long life. Please don't contact me again."
Hanging up the phone before he could say another word my hands were shaking and my heart was racing. Fear. That's was what ever-present in my mind and soul at this very moment. I heard Jackson before I saw him. He was colouring with Rosie at the table when I came back. Walking into the bedroom we were sharing I went into the bathroom and opened the medicine cabinet. Out of all the pills I had in the cabinet none of them would give me the instant relief I wanted. Jackson was standing in the bathroom door his eyes taking in my entire being.
"Are you ok? Zev you look in destress."
"I am."
"How can I help?"
I could hardly read the labels of the pills. I was panicked so bad. I listed off a few different medicines I wanted out of the cabinet as I sat on the toilet seat. Jackson found them all and gave me the pills. He filled the glass on the sink and gave it to me. After taking the four different pills my hands still shook wildly. It would at least me a half-hour before the pills gave me any relief.
"Come here."
Jackson walked forward and I warped my hands around him and laid my head on his stomach. My eyes closed and my ear on his stomach I copied his breathing and listened to his heartbeat until I calmed down slightly. Jackson looked so deeply concerned when he knelt and took my face in his hands.
"Zev, What happened? Why are you like this right now?"
"I want to tell you. I want to. But I can't."
"Zev, Why can't you be honest with me, and just tell me."
"You will kill him."
"What did he say to you."
"He just wanted to tell me he was sorry and that he was happy I'm well. He didn't say anything to make me feel so scared but I do. I'm still terrified of him."
"Zev, you know just as much as I do that he traumatized you, he could be a saint now and your still never going to trust him."
"Please don't hurt him---"
"Shhh, Zev I won't hurt him. You have my promise."
"I told him not to contact me again."
"Good, He's not supposed to have any contact with you anyways."
"He was aware. He wanted to apologize. I don't forgive him for what he did, and I know I don't have to."
Jackson hugged me again his hug so much deeper this time. It confused me how much this man ruined my logical brain. I inhaled his scent and just held him. He was comforting. I enjoyed the feeling of his arms around me and mine around him. I could get used to this. Maybe.
"Are you ok now Zev?"
"Yes. I think so."
He went to move from the hug and I sighed. I didn't want to have to let him go. I could have hugged him forever. Or at least a few more minutes. He dusted his knees off and took my hand pulling me up off the toilet. Rosie was at the table still. She had coloured so many pictures. When she saw me got off the chair and hugged my leg.
"You're ok now?"
I looked down at her large round eyes and smiled at her, picking her up and setting her on my hip I gave her a proper hug.
"Yes, I'm ok now. Daddy made everything better."
"Daddy always does."
"He does doesn't he."
"He fixes all my boo-boos, he can fix yours too."
"Maybe I'll let your daddy fix mine too then."
Rosie was such a cute kid. She was so sweet and innocent. Jackson was so sweet to her, I often found myself enjoying watching them interact together. He was such a great father. Jackson smiled at Rosie as she showed him all the pictures she coloured well we were in the bathroom. He stopped looking at her pictures for a split second and our eyes met. I saw something in his eyes I hadn't seen before, It was like content with the current situation. I wasn't as content, I wanted something that was dangerous for us.
Rosie went to her bedroom to grab something. This was my chance to at least fuck up my head on my own terms. I walked towards Jackson and grabbed his chin lightly tilting it up and pressing my lips to his before retreating just in time for Rosie to come back.
Take that, Mr. Chance.
