Kai always enjoyed his morning strolls through the woods, especially when the sun was just rising. The earth was slowly waking from its slumber. As he walked past, the plants and animals couldn't help but reach out to him. They drew as close as they possibly could, wanting to be in his presence as he picked herbs and hummed a wordless melody.
Cora sat up above in a tree, watching as Kai took his time greeting all living things around him. It was quite endearing to watch and brought a smile to her face.
Kai looked to the trees trying to locate his familiar as he felt her presence and her amusement through their bond. "Good morning Cora!" The soft-spoken man said to the barn owl.
"Good morning Kai. It seems that the flowers are exceptionally chatty this morning." Kai chuckled, "That they are. Such attention seekers."
Kai was about to turn around to start heading back to his cabin when an uneasy feeling pulled him to the side and further into the forest. "Cora, can you go up ahead and scout out the area please?". Cora nodded her head and let her large brown and white wings cut through the sky. The uneasy feeling intensified. He felt it in the pit of his stomach and deep in his chest, making him grimace.
Somethings wrong.
Cora quickly landed on the closest branch near Kai and said with an urgency in her voice, "There's a wolf up ahead, he's injured and bleeding out!" Kai immediately quickened his pace, now sprinting to the injured wolf before it was too late.
As he got to the clearing he saw the wolf. Blood and puss dripped from an infected wound on his underbelly. The poor wolf was on the brink of death.
Kai approached the injured wolf, using a calm and steady voice to soothe him so that he could get close enough to heal him. He crouched down right in front of the wolf and laid his hand atop of his head, relieving him of his pain.
Once the wolf fell asleep, Kai teleported them back to his cabin, right into his medical room. He quickly set up shop, grabbing all the ointments, elixirs, and surgical equipment he would need. The scent in the air was mainly blood but it was mixed with the scent of silver. With that assessment, he got to work.
Once he got the most life-threatening wound situated and healed shut, he let out a breath of relief.
"Subcinctus"
The sound of bones cracking and rearranging filled the air as the wolf involuntarily shifted into his human form. He thoroughly cleaned the rest of the wounds all over the man's body, expelling the last traces of poison.
When he was satisfied with his work he walked out of the room with the man's hovering body following close behind to a spare bedroom. He covered the man up with a blanket and quietly left the room to let the man rest.
---
A soft orange hue illuminated the room as dawn swiftly approached. The man on the bed began to stir awake. Slowly his eyes fluttered open. It was so quiet he wondered if he was still dreaming. He cautiously sat up and scanned the room. He was in a relatively small room with light grey walls. On the right of his was a nightstand that held a vase of flowers and a large glass of water.
Reaching for the glass of water, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was.. off. He tried to remember what events had occurred for him to wake up in a strange room, trying very hard to jog his memory, but once the cold water touched his dry lips, all he could think about was how fucking thirsty he was.
He was placing the cup back down when he caught a glips of bandages wrapped around his torso, and that's when it hit him,
he should be dead.
Instantly fear flooded his system. Where was he? Shouldn't he be dead somewhere in the woods? He wondered why he wasn't in any pain or how long was he out for. Another thing that came to mind as he assessed his body, why was he naked?
When he heard a voice clear their throat, he quickly pulled the quilt back atop of him to shield his exposed body. He looked up to see those memorizing green eyes he had saw in the woods.
"Hello, I'm glad to see you're awake."
A warning growl rose to his throat but to his surprise, his wolf was not growling with him. Even though he was with a stranger in an unknown location, his wolf was calmly sitting in the back of his mind. He was very confused. "Where am I? and who are you?"
Kai gave the man a warm smile, "My name is Kai, and this is my cabin. I was on my morning walk when I spotted you in a clearing about two miles from here." Kai stepped into the room as he spoke and set a tray of food down on a chair by the dresser. "You had quite the injuries, but you should be all healed up by now; may I take a look?" he gestured to the man's torso.
He gave a small nod to Kai, "Sure, how long was I out for?"
"Oh, about eight hours." Kai unwrapped the bandages to reveal a scar that looked months old. "Whoa, wait what!?" The man was visibly shocked. He moved his hand to poke at the scar, "how is this possible?" Sure he had healing abilities but never would it a life-threatening wound heal over like that in eight hours!
"Yup all healed," Kai said in a cheerful voice. He grabbed the tray of food and laid it on the man's lap. "I hope you're hungry."
---
Tristain tried very hard to keep his focus on chopping wood, but no matter what, his gaze kept finding its way back to Kai who was sweeping the porch of the cabin. Four weeks had already passed and the man knew little to nothing about Kai, whereas Kai knew everything about himself.
Tristian was an Omega. In some packs, an omega was one of the worst things you could be, and unfortunately for him, he was in a pack that thought omegas were worthless. He was treated horribly, getting physically and verbally abused since he was a child. Then all hell broke loose on his mate's eighteenth birthday.
She was the future Beta.
She was so excited the days before her birthday; she couldn't wait to find her mate. But when the day came and her eyes locked onto Tristian's, she rejected him.
He tried to run, there was nothing left for him there. He was a few months older than her and on his birthday, when he had not felt the mate pull, he got weirdly excited. He has had the biggest crush on the future beta since elementary. She was the only one who didn't treat him like actual garbage and at times stopped people from hurting him. He always wondered if they were mates but he never encouraged the thought very much, just in case.
Turns out he was right but it didn't even matter anymore, she made it perfectly clear that she did not want him, going as far as severing the bond completely. Before he made it to the end of the pack's territory, a larger wolf barrelled into his side and pinned him to the ground. Then there was a whole group of them. They beat him, some fighting in wolf form and others still in their human form using their fists or silver knives to cut into his skin. He somehow managed to get away and had wandered through the forest all day and night in a daze.
Kai didn't say anything as he told his story, and when needed, Kai pulled him into his embrace and soothed him. He felt safe in the stranger's arms. When he stopped crying and began apologizing, Kai stopped him and told him that he had nothing to be sorry for. As he finished his food he began to get very sleepy. It wasn't until Kai was tucking him into bed that he realized that the man was humming a lullaby and with every note, his eyelids became as heavy as stones.
He brought the wood into the house and began setting up to fireplace for later that evening. "Thank you so much for your help Tristian."
He turned back to see Kai entering the house with a small bouquet of wildflowers and smiled, "No problem, it's the least I can do."
Kai was very grateful for the extra pair of hands in the house but it saddened him to think that it was time for his new friend to go, his healing period has come to an end. The next day he brought up the question of Tristans stay and future plans.
"What do you think I should do?" Tristian asked quietly. He knew he was overstaying his welcome. Kai was such a good man and here he was taking advantage of his hospitality and kindness.
"Tristian, as much as I have enjoyed your company, your life isn't here with me. You've been through so much and are stronger than you know. I have a list of packs that will accept you with open arms, rank and all. After breakfast would you like to take a look and talk about it more?" Tristian nodded and Kai placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, leading him towards the kitchen.
After breakfast, Kai went on in great detail about packs that he thought would be the best fit for Tristian, letting him choose which he preferred. Kai packed him a light travel bag and walked out to where Tristian was patiently waiting for him. Tristian bowed his head low to Kai in gratitude. "Thank you, for everything."
"It was my pleasure, Tristian. I hope you find happiness in your new life and are open to love and new experiences. May the Goddess be with you, my friend."
Tristian looked back up at the man he has gotten to know for the past three weeks for the last time and returned the genuine smile, then he went on his way.
Kai waited until Tristian was quite a long way before closing his eyes. When he opened them, Tristian was nowhere in sight. He let out a breath and just kept staring out in the direction he was walking in.
"He will be just fine. You and I both know he will have a joyous life in his new pack. You did all that you could for him." Cora said to him as she landed on his shoulder. "Yes, I know." She was right, by the end of the day, he would be apart of a new pack who will shower him with the love and affection he had sadly missed out on. His time spent with Kai would be nothing but a faded memory. He wouldn't know that he was just teleported two thousand miles away; he wouldn't remember specifics of the cabin, of Cora, or of himself, just as Kai made to be.
It was best that way.
"Alrighty then!" he clapped his hands together, "are you ready for our next destination my sweet Cora?" Cora let out a loud exaggerative sigh as she leaned her head back to look up at the sky, "Do I have a choice?"
Kai chuckled and began walking back into the cabin, continuing to coo at his familiar. They bickered like an old married couple.
Once Kai closed the door behind them, an invisible bubble formed around the small cabin and with a snap of Kai's fingers, the cabin was gone. The only thing left in its place was a small, delicate, flower.
