My mothers words from my childhood whispered to me, a cold shiver seizing my body linked to what I had just fallen witness to. I was confused about what and why they had all been talking, a prisoner who had been kept strictly within a metal container in a dark room on the wenches bed, a ruthless pirate captain and a divine being. But, there were two things that I was certain about amidst the chaos and confusion, the woman saturated in heavenly light was definitely one of the Erinyes' sisters and Captain Axel Dieters' love had become cursed.
"What is it?" I heard Captain Axel Dieter ask hungrily as he stood concealed from my view. I had never heard the Captain sound so desperate and vulnerable, he was always composed and stoic in the way he carried himself around; I continued to eavesdrop.
"As a result of your cursed love, Captain, there has been much debate in Olympus, realm of the Gods, that it is not fair to your lover who unknowingly has endured eras of encounters with you Captain Axelius Dietres, to be separated to only then commence the chaos all over again in a never ending loop that has been going on for eras as you are able to recall Captain-" My heart skipped a beat, what kind of chaos had I gotten myself into? "- the gods would like to extend to you a metaphorical olive branch, where you are to decide the path you wish to take, here on this path lies the same fate you have faced these past years, decades, centuries, eras, and on this path lies a destiny, a rebirth, where you are to give up the treasures of the divine you have stolen from, for your love to be cured. Your beloved 'wenches bed' will be awaiting you on either path."
There was a long pause, where no one spoke, I stood nervously hidden in my spot.
"This is all your fault Dieter" It was Dante who had bitterly broken the silence with his mutterings "we could have ruled the world you and me, the two most powerful beings of the many seas. But no. You just had to go fall in love with that wench-" But before Dante could continue reciting his thoughts comically he was quickly cut off by an aggravated Captain Axel Dieter.
"This is exactly why I had you locked up in that tin can, after you went to go manipulate and seduce them, earning their trust, only to go kill them! And do not pretend like the first time we both laid eyes upon that supposed 'wench' you refer to, that you didn't fall in love when you first set eyes on them, the foul greed that had plagued the both of us had been alleviated once we-"
"Enough." The furie commanded "I have no time for your mundane bickering, the path you choose is to be decided when you lead your gang of hoon's to this exact location and walk through one of these paths, it is time I departed." And with a clap of lightning that splashed its frightening yet brilliant brightness onto the caverns walls, the furie was no longer present.
"What are you going to do, Captain Axelius Dietres" Dante mocked dryly, his eyes lingering on the Captain as a means to intimidate him. There was no response from the Captain as he thoughtfully wandered his way back to the camp site buried in the cave.
It was morning, where the sun could be seen peeking through a sliver in the roof of the cavern. The crew members had been instructed to clean up the camp site by an impatient Captain Axel Dieter this morning, before the sun had even come out. I had positioned myself on the outskirts of the chaos of frantic crew members packing up, I had sat myself on a rock, curiously observing the alloy box which contained Dante. We were currently standing idly at a fork in the road, this time I lagged behind the group so I could assess more deeply what was going on.
This was Captain Axel Dieter's big decision, I wasn't exactly sure which paths they were exactly but I knew what they led to. Everyone silently watched on as Captain Axel Dieter intensely stood at the head of the group, his hands behind his back, the cogs within his brain visibly turning.
I wasn't exactly sure what power the Captain possessed, but I had come to the assumption that whatever force that had prevented me from plummeting to my death that day I had fallen from the plank to my 'inevitable doom' had something to do with Captain Axel Dieter, but it has left me with the question, why? I have also come to understand that if he comes to the decision to choose the path of his 'rebirth,' he surrenders what power he possessed and I am certain the Captain's decision also impacts the man restricted in the confinement of the metal box.
We slowly follow behind the Captain as he hesitates making his way into the path on the left.
It's funny how I even ended up becoming so immersed in this circumstance that doesn't even involve me, I was just a knight in Lilydale serving his country and trying his best to earn honor and respect, admittedly dressing up as the princess hasn't been the most noble way to ward off pirates but through getting held as a captive amongst this mess I got the opportunity to witness a divine being in real life that my mother talked about in the stories she used to tell me.
The path ahead is now, not only figuratively but also in a literal sense, uncertain. Although the decision the Captain has lead us into doesn't directly affect me I still have to endure their company until I lead them to the treasure of Captain Poison Jack and bide for my freedom so I can return to Lilydale and see that the princess is safe.
The best part is that I had not a clue as to where the riches of Captain Poison Jack could be retrieved.
"Boy!" Captain Axel Dieter hollered from the head of the mob of us trailing behind him, everyone's faces snapped onto me and I quickly scuttled to the Captain as I realized he had beckoned for me.
"I prefer to be referred to as Sir James, Captain" I stated proudly, the knighted name I was bestowed by the King of Lilydale himself, as I reached Captain Axel Dieter at the head of the group. I looked up to the Captain to find his intense emerald gaze looming over me, his piercing eyes and stoic expression reaching into my soul.
"And I wish to be referred to as 'the Adonis of the many seas' but we don't live in a world where we get what we want." He commented dryly whilst plastering a sweetly feigned smirk to his face.
"In all due respect, Captain, my preferred name is a reflection of the truth..." I decided to stop as I witnessed the metamorphosis of his expression, muffled coughs from the group lagging behind resonated throughout the cavern. If looks could kill I would've been pierced into the caverns wall by the daggers shooting from Captain Axel Dieter's eyes. And then abruptly he grabbed me by the neck of the flowery night gown and pounded my form to the rigid surface of the caverns wall, everybody suddenly came to a halt.
"I could disintegrate you into nothing with the flick of my gaze" Captain Axel Dieter seethed, the captains ragged breath fanning my face due to our proximity "I did not summon you to insult me. Try it again and you'll never see daylight." I gulped down the bile that wedged itself in my throat, the Captain licking his lips as his emerald eyes bored into me.
With one final shove he released my form. I feebly collapsed to the ground as I peered up at Captain Axel Dieter hovering over me.
"I want to inform you that I haven't forgotten about our little deal that we bargained for your life, once we reach my ship you are expected to lead the way to the riches that once belonged to Captain Poison Jack." And with that, I was forgotten in the crowd. As the Captain moved forward so did his crew members, leaving me in the dust.
After travelling for what felt like the equivalent to a century, we finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Once we made it to the opening where the pool of light had awaited us, the Wenches Bed sat expectantly for the Captain as it waited anchored at sea, while a small rowboat awaited us at the shore.
"We will travel in groups of five, myself, Dante, Jack, the boy and Sebastian will be the first to board the Wenches bed" the Captain commanded "the row boat will be transported between the wenches bed and the shore by Sebastian who will deliver you all in groups of four. Now lets hurry up."
I cautiously made my way toward the row boat, the gravel adorning the shoreline prickling the soles of my feet. As I arrived Captain Axel Dieter roughly binded my wrists with rope, the rope biting into my skin due to how tightly the Captain had bound my wrists. I bit back my pain as I glared at the Captain while deploying myself into the row boat my seat beside Dante who was decorated in chains. Captain Axel Dieter was the last to come onto the row boat.
Sebastian was a muscular man which was probably why he was instructed to row the boat, my arms looked like twigs compared to the tree stumps that Sebastian had for limbs. As we continued rowing toward the wenches bed, tapping had begun to erupt from below the row boat, at first it was random, nothing to become curious about, but then it became more radical.
With a loud sigh Captain Axel Dieter turned his attention to look beyond the row boat, and as he searched for the source of the tapping which was becoming more fervent, I noticed Dante fiddling with his chains from beside me, in which he eventually escaped free from the knot connecting his bound wrists to his bound feet, and then with one fluid motion he hooked his arms around my neck and flung the both of us over board.
