Chapter 6: Cecily

I don’t understand the redhead. I don’t think she’s all that bad, I know there is good in all of us, but she seems to hate me. I think I know why though. It’s because I’m a royal. She’s a fairy, so someone just decided that we had to hate each other. Life is so tiresome, trying to figure out what to do around who and when. I try so hard to be nice and good but my brain is hardwired to treat everyone as inferior. I look around the room. Nothing much, just some bunk beds with thin, flimsy mattresses and one tiny mirror. I blanched at that sight! Only one mirror! And I doubt they have all of my beauty supplies! Plus, who will dress me in the morning? I try not to think that these people didn’t think of any of those things! My parents would be mortified.

Just the thought of my parents is enough to make me fall onto the bed. I hold back a sob, but I can feel it on my lips. I’ve lost so much in the past 24 hours. My parents, my title as princess. I sigh, but that doesn’t help much. I wish I could just go back in time, but only super powerful Fairies can do that. When I finish setting up the bed I hear a bubbly voice over the intercom.

“All new trainee’s please report to the Cafeteria for orientation! If you don’t know what I mean by ‘new trainee,’ that's a good sign you should head over to the cafeteria!”

Since I don’t know what she means by “new trainee,” I put my stuff down on the nearest bunk and head out of the dorm, trusting that there will be people to guide me since I don’t know my way. I head down the hallway and see another person who looks about my age. He has dark brown skin, curly hair, and strikingly blue eyes. Honestly a handsome combination, but I don’t feel that way towards boys. He’s looking at a map on the wall. Good, hopefully, he can help me.

“Um, excuse me, sir, do you know where to go to the cafe-

“Cafeteria! Sure, follow me! I was just making sure I’m headed the right way myself. My Talent is cartography, you see, so I felt it wise to memorize a map of the area. What's your Talent? Oh, I’m Jackson by the way.”

Goodness, that was a lot to take in. My...talent? I guess he meant what that tall guy addressed me as when I first arrived...the medic? I don’t even know. Luckily another announcement comes over the loudspeaker, saving me from having to answer Jackson. He seems like a nice guy, and I guess I should make other friends besides the redhead. I shudder at the thought of having her as my only companion. I suppose that other girl would be suitable but she doesn’t seem to say anything. Also, the fact that she is the necromancer is quite strange.

“...so I’ll see you in 5 minutes!” Oh, great. I missed the announcement. I suppose I shouldn’t be late. It's bad for my image. I start walking down one of the hallways and Jackson has the audacity to grab my hand.

“Sorry, but, the fastest way to the cafeteria is that way…” I yank my hand out of his grasp and head the direction he pointed to without looking back. Rude? Probably, but I’m the princess so these peasants deserve it, and he did grab my hand without permission. I hear him run up behind me.

“...I’m from Aerica, just west of here. But I moved to Ethiomalia last year, on the coast of Artifacia. Also, turn this way. By the way, I think I recognize you. Could you know why, or is it just me?” He thinks he recognizes me!? I’m the princess of Frangland for crying out loud! Ugh, don’t people read or watch the news these days? My parents death has to be-

Suddenly all the pain I was feeling 20 minutes ago comes back. My chest hurts. I can't breath. I see the ground spin beneath me and black dots swim at the edge of my vision. I see Jackson standing above me, a look of concern on his face. Is he saying something? I can’t hear anything. I feel tears stream down my face. Suddenly the ground rushes up to meet me and everything goes dark.

In a world filled with magic, certain people have special talents. Talents are increased skills in an ordinary skill, or magic to do one of the Five Arts (Necromancy, Whispering, Teleportation, Bending, and Searching). Follow Calanta, Cecily, Flannery, and others on an adventure through a new world. Happy reading!

P.S. I will be using different languages in this book...you should be able to get what the characters are saying but if you can't, google translate! Also, one of the characters is Arabic and ideally she would speak Arabic but because English writes left to right and Arabic writes left to write (correct me if I'm wrong) I couldn't get the formatting right to use Arabic as a language in the book. Also, I use Google Translate and Duolingo for every language but Spanish, so if I have any errors please don't hesitate to correct me. Thanks!
