“You don’t- I needed you, and you weren’t there!” He backed away, his hands pressed against his chest as if that might stop the emotions from ruining his heart.
“But I’m here now, mon trésor.” The other guy was approaching, his eyes full of pain, full of regret with the knowledge of what he had done.
Unspoken words seemed to flow between them, and galaxies full of feelings passed over their faces. The other man wanted nothing more in the world than to take him into his arms, to kiss away the heartbreak that was so clearly illustrated in his actions.
But he wasn’t allowed to do that anymore. He wasn’t allowed to hold him as the sun went below the horizon, he wasn’t allowed to bring him a mug of coffee in bed. He couldn’t hold his hand in the park anymore, and he couldn’t run his hands down the body he knew so well.
“It’s too late for that.” His words were a whisper, and his voice cracked when he said them. His face and posture were crumbling, and he looked like he might fall and dissolve into the very ground on which he stood.
“No.” The other man’s face was full of horror, full of fear. “No- I- I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Please, just give me one more chance, mon étoile. I can make it right, I know I can!” His hands reached out in front of him, reached out to hold the man he loved more than life itself.
Too late.
“You broke me.” The words were meant to come out as an accusation, but they were only muttered with resignation. He knew this was the end.
The other man visibly flinched at the words, and never had anyone looked so anguished in their entire life. Never had anyone wished to turn back the clock, never had anyone wished to undo their mistakes as much as he did. Never had anyone started to fall apart on the inside, never had anyone begun to degrade with the knowledge of the consequences of their actions.
“Please. I- I need you. I can’t live without you, tu es tout pour moi!” The other man’s voice went up in pitch, and his eyes were starting to go wild, starting to go mad with the knowledge he had ruined the one thing in life he was living for.
“And yet,” His voice wasn’t angry, even though he secretly wanted it to be. It was only raw with grief and heartache, and the heaviness of someone who has been crushed into pieces. “You disappeared. You left me alone, with no way of contacting you. You left me for two months in darkness, in silence.” His eyes filled with tears, even though at this point he had cried so much he wasn’t even sure if there were any tears left to cry.
“It was a mistake. Chéri, please. Je t’aime.” The other man’s voice was raw with unfiltered longing, and if you looked close enough, you could almost see the cracks in his skin, the fissures appearing rapidly, tearing him apart.
The other man was hardly aware of what he was saying at this point, but he was bargaining, bargaining wildly for the man he could see the universe in. “Never again, never again would I leave you. Je ferais n'importe quoi, anything for you to come back to me. I made a mistake, I know I did. S'il vous plaît, let me come back to you.”
His heart should have been cracking in half watching this man plead for him, but it had already cracked months ago, and it was too late for it to break again.
But his voice still cracked on his final word to the man he once would have crossed mountains to be with. “Goodbye.”
