Later that day, after lunch, Roja is on her way back to her room when she starts to notice that she’s in the wrong hallway. She remembers her door being the fifth one in the hallway, but this one doesn’t even have five doors! Trying to figure out where she went wrong, she looks around for someone she knows. Why is this house so big? How many rooms are there? “Roja, are you up there?” Lola asks and Roja affirms. “You took the wrong stairs! Don’t worry, just go to the last door on your left and you’ll get to the right hallway that way!” Lola replies. Relieved, Roja walks to the last door on her left. She hesitates for a short moment. What if Lola meant the last door in the other direction? She takes a deep breath, hoping that she chose the right door and opens it.
As she enters the room, she notices right away that this is not the way to the hallway that leads to her room. However, she is impressed by what she sees. In front of her is a room full of books, some chairs and a couch that surrounds a fireplace. Roja is amazed by the number of books here and the seating accommodation looks cosy. However, in the back of the room, she sees Jason picking out one of the books. Thinking that he wouldn’t allow her to be here and hoping that he hasn’t seen her yet, Roja turns to the door to leave. As she’s about to open the door, Jason shouts her name.
Roja flinches and turns around to see Jason walking over to her. “I’m sorry, I was looking for my room,” she mumbles, trying to avoid eye contact with him. Jason takes a deep breath, remembering what his mother has told him.
“It’s fine, you can stay. This place is big enough for all of us,” he says while trying to give her a slight smile. Spending time with her will hopefully help him find out more about her and her connections to Dexter.
“Do you like reading?” he asks to break the uncomfortable silence between them while they are still standing close to the door.
“Yes, it’s what I’ve done in my free time to get my mind off things…” Roja explains.
Jason nods, “Well, you can come here whenever you want.”
“Really?” Roja asks in disbelief and excitement. “I mean… that would be really nice,” she adds, pushing her excitement away. Jason smiles at her. That was the first time he saw her a bit happy.
“Just get a book and sit down wherever you want, Anne keeps the fire burning all evening and sometimes even in the afternoon,” Jason explains. Roja nods and follows him to the large bookshelves.
After picking a book, Roja sits down on the couch. Jason sits down on a chair opposite to Roja and acts as if he is reading his book. It doesn't take the girl long to notice that he keeps looking at her. “Does he think I don’t notice him?” she asks herself while trying to stay focused on her book.
Just a minute later, Jason puts away his book and looks at Roja directly, “Roja, can I ask you something?” She nods while putting her book on the couch. “I found out that you were with a family called Smith for some time,” Jason starts.
“How did you find that out?” Roja asks a bit shocked.
“I have my ways,” he replies. Discretion was something he only knew when it concerned gang-related business. “What do you remember about that family?” he asks. Roja sighs. She isn’t ready to tell him about that family.
“I’d rather not talk about that,” she mumbles, hoping that Jason won’t get angry at her.
“I know it's difficult for you,” Jason says with mostly fake but also with a bit of real compassion in his voice. “Maybe we can talk about it later?” he suggests.
Roja decides to ignore the question, “I’ll go back to my room now.” She doesn’t understand why he keeps asking about that. She leaves the book on the couch and heads to the door. When she passes Jason, he stands up and grabs her wrist carefully. Right away, Roja apologizes even though she’s not sure what she is apologizing for.
“No, I’m sorry. I’m clearly not good at being sensitive. I shouldn’t pressure you to tell me anything,” Jason admits, still holding Roja’s wrist. Roja takes a deep breath before looking at her wrists. He immediately pulls his hand away.
“Let’s sit down and talk about something else,” Jason suggests and waits till Roja sits down again. After an uncomfortable silence, Jason tries to start a more joyful conversation, “I guess Lola really enjoys your presence. She normally never invites girls to go shopping with her.”
“I’ve never been shopping,” Roja admits while trying to find out if he’ll let her go. Ric never let her leave the house. However, this is not another foster family. “Can I ask you something?” Roja asks hesitantly.
“Sure, go ahead,” Jason replies.
“When will I have to leave?”
“I’m not going to send you back to Ric!”
“Sooner or later, everyone left me or got rid of me. I just want to know before I get too used to… this,” Roja explains, trying to keep her tone neutral. The thought of losing this new-found peace is stuck in her mind. This family has no legal obligation to let her stay.
“Trust me, I’m glad you’re here right now. Lola likes you, Oren likes you, even my mother likes you!” Jason says while starting to laugh about it. How could this girl be a spy? How could he even think that this is a possibility? “I’ll learn how to have a conversation with you without getting upset or pushy. I know I can be a jerk sometimes but I’m just careful around strangers. But you shouldn’t suffer from that,” Jason admits. For a moment, he feels a very similar kind of peace that Roja is feeling.
“It’s fine, I’m okay,” Roja tries to assure him.
“I know you’re not. You don’t have to pretend to be alright around me.”
Roja tries to hold back the tears that she feels in her eyes once again and hopes that Jason doesn’t notice. At that moment, his phone beeps. As he looks at it, he explains, “I have to go now, I’m needed at work. You can stay here if you want to.” With that, he rushes out of the library, leaving the peaceful atmosphere behind. Roja gets back to reading, trying to escape her reality like she always does. It’s difficult for her to believe that everything could be good from now on.
