Murphy's Law

Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven

Aug 02, 2020

The boy flinched, startled by the crash. The girl who'd fallen over stood shakily, a stunned expression plastered to her face. The people standing around us started whispering, glancing excitedly at Alistair, who had gone back to being about as aware of his surroundings as a houseplant. I was in utter disbelief, but I tried not to show it. I'd been a total ass to him earlier, so my mind was in a flurry, thinking of ways to befriend him. Why? Because he must be under a lot of pressure, and I wanted to support him, of course.

I bit my tongue trying not to laugh out loud. The only reason I'd ever befriend someone was if there was something to gain by doing so.

Clearly, I'm not a very good person.

I pushed myself off the table I'd been leaning against. I headed towards the cult-like circle of senior girls surrounding him. He glanced up at me with dazed eyes, cheeks splotchy and red from the alcohol. "Come on, I think you've had enough," I laughed, stepping into the circle. He shook his head stubbornly. "No," he pouted. The girls giggled at his childish behavior, and I resisted the urge to slap him. Instead, I smiled and hauled him to his feet. Alistair stumbled forward, leaning all his weight on me. I held on to his shoulder and we hobbled towards the door, grabbing his coat on the way out. His admirers grumbled disappointedly as we exited the room.

"Hey, I don't know if you remember me, my name's James," I smiled at him. He smiled but didn't say anything. "Uhm, what's your address?" I asked. He just giggled, leaning onto me as if he was going to go to sleep. I refrained from slapping him sober and instead looked in his coat pockets. I found a wallet, which contained an address scrawled onto a piece of paper that looked like the back of a receipt. I awkwardly typed it into Joogle Maps while making sure Alistair didn't faceplant into the ground. (Tempting as it was to let him fall)

The whole journey took an hour. This idiot lived so far away that we needed to take not one, but two buses. To make matters worse, as we were walking towards his place, he--

"uHp-bleghhhhh"

He vomited on me.
