It has been about a month since the gathering. Syun had already been a member of the adventurers guild. She's also out of her town for the first time in a long while and she's eager to face the world head on. Her title as Slayer Protector made ripple not only to the elven community but to others as well. As if in that name came the fame, and also the job request. Many have been posting and waiting to be fulfilled by her.
But Syun knew that she's no expert. In her mind she only killed the elven bear because she got lucky. Right now she's only accepting jobs that are suitable to her experience and not her title. That led her to her current job, on a farm house in the edge of Sonata. The farm house is owned by a elderly couple between a dwarf and an elf. They plant a variety of limes and lemons which is known to be the most delicious in the whole country. The farm is about ten hectare, mostly it's filled with lemons but over time the couple learned to diversify, they started adding potatoes and other root crops. The couple not only hired Syun but also a few laborers and farmers because today starts the week of harvest.
They call out the maximum number of people to help them with harvesting and planting of crops and fruits. The work started early in the morning when people would harvest them and before noon they would begin to fertilize the land. In this day in age jobs like this can be done by gigantic machines but the couple refuse to do so. They say that the manual labor gives the fruits their daily nutrition, and they might be right. Each of the buds are blessed before being planted individually by them. As the workers toiled, Syun now wearing the hide of the great elven bear as a cape looked over them just as a part of her job.
It had been three days since Syun received this job request. The rating and pay are small but that is enough for her. The job description read 'looking for a farm assistant' to a normal adventurer accepting this job would be an insult to them, but Syun dug deeper and found that this was posted by an elderly couple so she decided to accept it. Her employer didn't realize that the fabled hunter protector was the one to do their job.
Syun was informed that during harvest time there is a swarm of giant lemon rust mites that appears and tries to take the entire harvest. Her job is to make sure that the swarms don't reach the farm. That's the reason why she has been making routine rounds around the farm so she can make sure that her employer's property is safe. As she finishes her final sweep of the place she is greeted by the elder elf.
"Is everything alright, Slayer Protector?" The elf asked Syun.
"Yeah, and please call me Syun" She replied. "I have to be honest, I thought this place would at least be visited by a swarm or two. Yet so far there's nothing." She added.
"Well if that is the case then we are certainly lucky. The gods have given us what we wanted."
As they finished the conversation Syun heard something. It was like a strong gust of wind. They both looked surprised, then they looked over the field and saw a moving cloud. But it was no cloud, it was the swarm of bugs. Syun took out her gun, it was a SPAS-12 shotgun.
"Get inside now" Syun ordered the elderly as she descended down to the farm.
The workers were still standing beside the basket full of their harvest. Syun went over them and ordered them to carry the basket back to the storage. As she got closer to the swarm she aimed her shotgun at the swarm. Then she fired at it. The bullets removed a chunk of the swarm but few bugs came to replace the dead ones. It continued for about five shots. Syun reloaded her gun, the swarm saw this and formed into a pillar that lunged towards her.
She briefly paused her reloading, took a pair of lemons and fired at the attacking swarm. As she shoots she gradually moves aside. Syun used her mouth to peel off the lemons and squeezed the juice onto her body which made the bugs follow her. She ran away from the farm, she hopped out of the fence and into the open field. The swarm now attracted to the juice she poured to herself are chasing her. She fired the gun as it continually charged at her. She rolled her way out of there and continued to fire.
The swarm formed into a cloud again. Syun fired at it, but instead of dying they just disperse and reform. Syun thought it was weird. She fired again and the same thing happened. She paused for a while, her intention was to make the swarm charge after her. As the swarm flew in she covered herself with her cape. A soon as the swarm hit her cape she felt nothing because of the elven bear's unbreakable skin. She fired at the bugs that were close to her. They fell down, she then moved away from the swarm.
As she ran she saw a woman standing there. The woman was still and looked at Syun. Syun shouted at her to move out of the way. But instead of moving the woman raised her hand and swept it aside. In sync with her movements were the swarm. It swept Syun away, sending her flying a few meters back. The woman raised her hand again. The swarm this time flew towards Syun's face, hitting her and sending her back a few steps. As Syun recovered she looked at the woman. The woman calmly walked towards her. She saw a few bugs crawling around and out of her skin.
"What the hell" Syun said out loud in the sigh of the woman who turns out to be her enemy.
