A/N: At the end of each chapter I will post my entire thought process out in an author's note, that way not only you guys can see how I order my ideas, but also as a recap for me and to keep track of my demons and their personalities/powers/what they do.
Devyn was awoken the next morning by loud chatter outside his door. Demons were yelling and laughing excitedly. But Devyn wasn't. Frankly, he was annoyed by being woken two hours before his lessons began. With a thump, his feet hit the floor and he was headed for the door. Once he swung it open, the demons turned to look at him fearfully, the noise disappearing all together. Without a word, he glared at them as they mumbled their apologizes and rushed down the hallways to get away.
Huffing, he slammed the door shut and laid back down on the cot, the coldness soothing against his skin. He would lay here for a little while, until it was time to go. However, when he woke from his nap, he was already thirty minutes late for his classes. "Shit!" He hissed as he glanced at his clock, jumping from the bed. At least he was still dressed, he wouldn't need to change his clothes. He would work in this for now.
Sprinting, he hurried to the library to find his tutor. However, when he got there, there was a sign hanging on the door. "Do Not Enter. Library Closed Until Further Notice." Devyn groaned as he turned around to look for someone familiar. His heart pounded in his chest as he panted, looking for anything that might tell him where to go.
Never had his lessons been cancelled, and he didn't expect today to be any different. But there was something off. There was hardly any servants around at all. Usually they crowded the hallways, trying to clean up every boot scuff. Now there was only five at the most sulking around. Had he missed something?
Quickly, he headed to his father's throne room. If anyone knew what was going on it had to be him. However, when he got there the doors were bolted shut. Growling, he kicked the door with his boot. This was ridiculous! Just when he was about to turn away, the door cracked open and a small servant girl poked her head out.
Her face paled when she looked at him, and she quickly casted her gaze to the floor before ducking back inside. Devyn heard her mumble a few words before the door was open wider, inviting him in. Confused, he slowly entered the room and looked around. Mostly the higher ranked demons were in the room. Pandora*, Hiro*, and Abigar* stood beside Ren, their arms folded behind their back. A few other unrecognizable demons with horns and large fangs stood to one side of the wall, most likely security guards.
"Devyn, stand next to Abigar," Ren called out from his throne, looking completely bored. Devyn nodded and followed his father's orders. Abigar didn't even acknowledge his presence as he came to stand next to the other demon. After a moment, Ren stood, his crown glistening off the lights.
"Some of you may of heard, but we have finally created a portal that the Exorcists aren't aware of or haven't been able to pinpoint. Therefore it is completely safe for demons to enter and exit at their own risk."
Excited chatter filled the room before one of the guards along the wall pulled out a rod that cracked with electricity. The talking stopped and was then filled with the rustling of fabric. Devyn knew exactly how they felt. His heart quickened at the thought of being able to see the Overworld again. There had been some things he had missed.
"However, I'm sending the first group to finish a mission there, something long overdue. After that it is free for public use." Ren took a step forward and motioned to them. "Hiro and my son, Devyn will be the first to go."
Abigar snorted and curled his lip slightly, but it was covered by the sounds of the rest of the demons in the room. Too excited to contain themselves, they began to cheer and laugh, even as the guards eyed them closely. Hiro beckoned Devyn closer, his one red eye twinkling.
Devyn had never talked to the other demon, but he had seen him a few times. He was Ren's second in command, so he was always along side the Ruler of the Underworld. He had heard about how Hiro had lost his eye on the front lines of a war fought a hundred years ago. But they had never had a real conversation with each other.
"How does it feel going back home?" Hiro called out over the roar of demons, slinging his arm over Devyn's shoulders. The word felt strange to hear. Home.
"This is my home now." Devyn called back, looking out over his people. Without him, they would be lost after his father's passing. This was his purpose. Becoming an Exorcist had been his father's dream.
Hiro only laughed at his comment and patted his back. His teeth poked out from his bottom lip as his he brushed his spiked black hair back. Devyn frowned as he glanced around the room, looking for Pandora. Once he found her, he pushed through the group of people blocking his way. He waved her down and she smiled at him, waving.
"How does it feel to finally go to the Overworld?" She smiled, folding her arms across her chest. "Your lucky that your even allowed to enter through the portals, considering everything your background."
Devyn only smiled and nodded. "I was surprised too. I would have expected Abigar or even you to be picked for a mission."
Pandora only threw her head back and laughed. "Hiro and Abigar can't stand each other! No way they would be permitted to go on a mission together."
Devyn only frowned as he glanced at the two demons. They were two completely different demons, but that didn't give them an excuse. Maybe something happened in the past, during the war perhaps. But he wouldn't stress about it too much. It wasn't any of his business, so he wouldn't pry.
Pandora tapped him on the shoulder, startling him. "Your father is waiting for you. You should go talk to him."
Devyn nodded as he made his way to the corner of the room with Hiro in tow. His father only tilted his head in greeting as he continued to watch the rest of the people enter and exit the room as they pleased, joy and excitement written plain on their faces.
"You two will be leaving as soon as this group leaves." Devyn blinked in surprise as he turned to face his father. "I suggest you two finish up anything you need in the next hour or two."
Devyn nodded as he pushed himself off the wall, heading towards his room. Pandora must have seen him leaving, since a few moments later she was beside him again. "You two are leaving now? What exactly are you supposed to be doing?"
Devyn shrugged. "I'm not sure, but whatever it is it must be important. That still doesn't explain why I was picked, especially if it's this important..."
Pandora only tapped him on the shoulder as she followed him to his room. He quickly changed into something that would make him seem more human. He chose a pair of ripped blue jeans and a grey t-shirt. It would be hot out this time of year.
Once he was finished cleaning up, they headed back to the throne room. When they reached the doors, they said their goodbyes and parted ways. "I have to finish something up for you at home. Maybe it can help you with your powers!" She had said as she waved goodbye to him.
Hiro and Ren were already standing beside a glowing purple circle on the floor, a beam of dark light radiating off of it. Ren nodded as he entered. "Good. So you both are ready to go then?"
Confused, Devyn took a position beside Hiro. "Wait, what exactly are we supposed to be doing there? I haven't been told anything."
"Neither has Hiro. I was waiting until you got here to explain everything, so I wouldn't have to say it twice." Ren regarded the portal with distaste. "You'll be entering through this portal. It should lead to a wooded area, a place where no one should see you two coming and going. Once your there, I need both of you to enter the Exorcist HQ."
Devyn and Hiro glanced at each other, both in shock. They were planning on an attack? Now of all times? Devyn's heart sank as he realized why he had been picked. He had been training to be an Exorcist at one point. Of course he would know something about their headquarters.
"I want a close estimate on how many Exorcists are there, as well as shift changes. Note any back exits and hidden escape routes in the entire building. Don't get caught, and gather as much info as possible without jeopardizing your mission. If you feel threatened at any time, leave and come back with what you've found."
Hiro saluted as he made his way toward the portal opening. Devyn followed closely behind, wary of the portal. He hadn't remembered his first time going through the portal, so he didn't know what to expect going through it.
Ren turned and waved them away. Hiro flashed a grin as he jumped feet first into the portal, Devyn gawking beside him. His stomach turned into knots as he slowly stuck a foot into the portal, his body sinking like quicksand. He quickly stuck his other foot in as he felt the warmth envelope his body, and his conscious slowly fading.
It felt like hours before Devyn was slowly pushed up on the other side of the portal, Hiro standing over him with his arms crossed and a grin always plastered on his face.
"Sleepy?" He asked as he reached down to pull Devyn out by his shirt. The portal reached for his feet, trying to pull him back under. "That's a side affect of the portal, you'll get used to it eventually."
Get used to it eventually. It was an awkward thing to hear. Even though he had been in the demon world for a while now, and his human life had slowly begun to fade from his memory, he still felt out of place at times. Like he didn't belong here either. And he didn't. He was a half-breed, and half-breeds had no place in this world. They were neither demon or human, and one species wouldn't get over the fact that he had the opposite running through his veins.
"Almost there..." Hiro whispered, shushing him. Even though the trees hid them perfectly from view, they could still get caught if any of the guards decided to investigate any noises they heard.
