Ananke is the greek personification of inevitability, compulsion, and necessity. Strepheim “to turn”
Age: 28*
Origin Region: Lugos
Rank: Legatus
Loa Abilities: shadow / “the divine dark”
Family: mother Aksana, father unknown. Half-sister Velinius, half-brother Salim (deceased)
Design:
- Kanna has auburn hair that leans on red and grey eyes with a black ring around her irises. She has fair skin and freckles.
- She is roughly 5’3, which is below average for people from Lugos. Her height isn’t always immediately apparent. She carries herself with an air that makes her seem taller, and her height is usually not noticed by others unless/until they come very close and realize they have to look down to see her. She is far from dainty, though. She is strong, her musculature balanced and defined.
- Kanna’s coloring is unnerving to most people. Her skin is too pale, and while copper brown hair is uncommon (Aksana, Velinius), her own leans too far to red. Her grey eyes are unique to her alone.
Clothing:
- Kanna tends to wear whatever is available. She doesn’t care if her clothes match or fit properly, just that they cover her. She usually wears a leather cuirass that provides her with some measure of protection from another lethal blow.
- As the Second, and later the Legatus, Kanna wears the Palamidia’s battle dress, armor included, as opposed to the relaxed (Vahn, Haru) or formal (Osawa, Velinius) dress others prefer. However, she often wore it “sloppily,” leaving the sides of her armor loose and her shirts untucked. The Legatus jacket, which denotes her rank and is heavily embroidered, reaches to her ankles. She tends to just shrug it on, buttoning it only for meetings/confrontations.
- Kanna is always armed. She keeps her knives sheathed at her hips at all times.
Scars: Kanna is a battle tested and hardened soldier, which comes with its share of (physical) scars. However, the most prominent scars she bears are:
- A scar that bisects her right eyebrow. It is her first scar, and is from her childhood when she was pushed down stairs.
- Her right shoulder, moving down her back. She blocked a blow meant for Haru. He took it partially to the chest, but she was able to prevent fatal damage from being dealt to him.
- Left side, below her ribs. While her other scars are “normal,” this one radiates lines of gold, like veins.
Story
- Kanna is Aksana’s third and youngest child, and her father is unknown. Velinius is her oldest half-sister, and she had a half-brother, Salim, that died before she was born.
- She was taken from her mother as a child because Aksana was deemed unfit to care for her. Aksana suffered from a deep depression and grief after the loss of Salim, and her refusal to reveal who Kanna’s father was was seen as another symptom of her “madness.”
- Due to the nature of her powers, Kanna was placed in the care of the Palamidia and raised by committee. No one knew exactly what to do with her, and Velinius saw an opportunity to take over Kanna’s day-to-day schedule/care.
- Kanna was introduced to war before she was even a teenager. Velinius brought her into her first battle when she was 11.
- Kanna met Vahn soon after this first battle. [He was 15. However, due to their stations, they did not interact much until later]
- Velinius rose to power as the Legatus when she was 28. Kanna was named as the Second when she was 17.
- Kanna met Haru when she was 18
- Kanna became Legatus five years later (24), after defeating Velinius in a duel. The Legatus position is a lifetime appointment, but Kanna refused to kill Velinius after defeating her.
- Three years after becoming Legatus, Kanna disappeared while on a scouting mission to Ilazki and was presumed dead (27). However, she could not be replaced because there was no actual proof of her death.
Character
- Kanna is a result of trauma. She grew up lonely and alone, both ridiculed as an outsider due to her appearance (and her unknown parentage) and feared for her abilities.
- Due to her upbringing, Kanna is emotionally and socially inept. She does her best to mimic what she has observed in social situations, but she has the tact and grace of a headbutt.
- Velinius raised her as a weapon. She believed that she was only worth anything if she was useful in some way.
- Kanna suffers from PTSD and certain aspects of this inform her behavior (specifically: dissociation, avoidance, emotional numbing).
- Kanna is generally uninterested in her own survival. She has very low self-worth and has always seen her abilities as proof that she is something less than human, something dark and terrible. Because of this, she is always trying to atone for her own existence.
- She would prefer to throw herself into situations that could lead to her death rather than see others possibly hurt.
- Kanna is slow to trust. However, she is fiercely protective. She doesn’t have to trust someone to think they are worth protecting.
- She is good at killing. She is one of the best. She is aware of this, but that doesn’t mean she enjoys it. Kanna feels every death, more than anyone else can because of her abilities. It was Haru that made her believe that she could be something more than a weapon, and that was why she challenged Velinius. As Legatus, her goal was to make herself obsolete.
Other
- Kanna loves her horse, Amon, and horses in general. It was her obsession that led to Vahn’s. When she left Lugos before her last mission, she took one of Haru’s knives and his horse, Bia, leaving him with her own.
- Vahn was the first person she trusted, and she relies on him to basically translate social dynamics for her.
- She is insanely good at the card game Palamedes. Even after losing her memories. She made money gambling on the game when she first woke up.
- Kanna isn’t body conscious and doesn’t really worry about her appearance, though she typically balks at being touched in any way.
