There he walked quickly down the wet streets below the looming foggy twilight. His dark eyes frantically surveying the area as his feet stepped harshly in the light puddles illuminated by the fluorescent billboards and advertisements pasted on every corner and side of the large buildings towering above him at every angle.
"Jayce?"
Stopping abruptly, he adjusts his mask with caution, his slow approach being cut off by the woman suddenly emerging from the dark alley to his side paired with a worried expression in her face which soon changed to sweet relief.
"What are you doing out here without your mask on?", Jayce said in a condescending tone as she embraced him lovingly, "Tonight was my turn for the supply run, Kim. It's dangerous."
He hands Kimmy a black mask which she quickly puts over her nose and mouth, upset at the reminder of the world they lived in.
The two continued to walk through the streets, knocking to the side bottles and waste that blocked them lightly as to not make too much of a sound. The silence was deafening, almost worrying. Kim sweat and twiddled her dark hair with clear anxiety, something that Jayce could always see. As they walked, he looked at her sympathetically knowing her current thoughts and fears, wishing only to make her world a little brighter.
"Is there something on my face?" She jokingly said, flustered by his continuous gaze.
"You look fine but keep it down," Jayce replied quietly, "you never know who's wandering around these parts."
Kim dips her head, wishing to be ignorant of how truthful that statement was.
"The supply run was a success, there's something to be happy about!" Jayce responded in attempt to cheer her up.
"Was it? You're not even using the bag we gave you."
Jayce showed a small smile that, although overshadowed by his mask, she knew well. He slips his hand into his back pocket after looking around the area and dipping into the nearby dark alleyway.
"Yeah, its not much but..." he says as he pulls out a small titanium pistol, "I managed to nick it off one of the broken troopers. The servers might be shut off to it in a week but that's one week of trusty protection."
Kim smiles happily at the sight of his confidence and their safety, though her happiness soon is cut by a gunshot heard in the near-distance. Jayce immediately grabs her hand and pulls her out of the alleyway, sprinting down the street opposite the shot whilst frantically searching his pockets for a phone. They don't look back to the hollering yet they cannot block out the sounds of the explosions approaching them quickly. Kim closes her eyes, blocking out her tears as she focuses only on Jayce directing her away from the unexplainable chaos behind them creeping up faster than any disaster they had seen before.
"Hunter! We're in Blackdon Way, second exit from you!", Jayce yells into his phone, not leaving any time for Hunter to answer. "Leave the shutter open!"
His call is cut short by a bright flash, gang members closing in from behind them armed terrified with rifles and kevlar and infront of them something that can only be described as a monster. Crimson liquid pouring down from the sides of buildings and reality distorting, splitting apart infront of their eyes like a gory piece of abstract art. Jayce manages to divert his eyes back behind them to the men and women with their weapons raised and ready. He drags Kim away from the monstrosity to the first exit on their right, dodging the oncoming crossfire that followed suit.
Kimmy is blank, she slumps onto Jayce as he supports her up in addition to himself.
"It's most likely a new weapon being tested, they do that round these parts all the time." He says to her in an attempt to comfort though she stays in hard shock, barely able to keep walking. Regardless of her condition, Jayce continues to wearily drag her further into the foggy alley. As they continue, they notice yet decide to be ignorant of the ominous dampening of the chaos elapsing behind them faster than expected. His knees weak and mind weaker, he looks blankly into the fog as he lifts his foot finding his boot to be soaked in the crimson fluid. Out steps a person with snowy grey hair and empty eyes, skin cold and fresh out in the smog walking barefoot and naked towards them.
"What have you done?!" Pulling out his gun, Jayce holds Kim tight. The person does not answer but instead continues to trudge slowly towards them, staring at them blindly with dreary eyes. Shaking, Jayce fixes his finger on the trigger with sweat dripping down his face, making eye-contact with the person up until they were mere inches from his face with the pistol pressing firmly against the thin skin of the person's chest. Eyes shut, Jayce shoots, jolting Kim awake and marking the next day for the rest of their lives.
