The next day the four of them sat around the table. Envy desperately trying to win her latest lover back to her side. A desperate attempt to make him not dislike her. Pride had her eyes closed. Doing her best to figure out a plan or even just a general idea about how to deal with Conquest. Her thoughts were interrupted.
“And this is a mango!” Rose held up the fruit to Wrath. She tossed it in her hand before picking up a knife and cutting a piece off for Wrath to taste. Wrath nodded with subdued satisfaction at the taste. “I can’t believe you’ve never had so many fruits before.” Rose stared down at the array of fruits she had gotten earlier. The night before Wrath stared at her in confusion when Rose named different fruits the smoothie place used. The following morning she sought to fix what she viewed as a problem. “Pride have you ever had a mango before?”
“I cannot describe to you how little I care about this topic.”
“Okay!” Rose turned her attention back to Wrath. “What do you want to try next?” Rose caught Wrath’s eyes travel over the raspberry. “That’s a raspberry.”
“I know what a raspberry is!” Wrath huffed.
Pride had her head in her hands. “Plan for Conquest,” She said. Her voice rushed. She slammed her hands on the table standing up. Aimless wandering around Rose’s apartment. “Anything? Anything at all?
“Let’s just kill him,” Rose wined.
“I’ve already told you-” Pride started. Wrath glared at Pride. Who scoffed. Pride grit her teeth. “We can’t kill him unless we want to suffer for all eternity. Once this is done the only other place we can go is down. I don’t want Lucifer to be mad at me. And I’m sure that’s not a fate the rest of you want. So he lives.”
“Got it.” Rose nodded. She sighed and started to mess around on her laptop. Humming to herself. Wrath eyed her across the table before picking up the rest of the mango. She ate from it staring at Pride.
“Yeah cause stopping the war he’s been waiting millennia won’t make him want to eviscerate you.” Wrath mumbled to herself. Pride was about to yell at her.
Envy sighed from her position next to Wrath. “Do we at least know what we need to do? Lucifer's been pretty vague on what exactly the horsemen do.” She stared at Pride awaiting an answer.
“I… don’t know.” She ran a hand through her grey hair as she sat back down. Should I know? No, I didn’t need to. Lucifer would have told me if it was needed. “But I don’t need to know. The angels would tell me if it was necessary information.”
Envy and Wrath silently glanced at each other. Envy spoke up first. “Right… Well, we can just ask Conquest if he still knows what he does when the time comes, right? Make him think we are just making sure he knows. That way we find out the plan.”
“Yeah that would work ‘Hey Conquest, you know that plan you guys and Lucifer have been working on for thousands of years. You remember it?’ Nothing suspicious about that at all!” Wrath smiled. “Oh wait… No, it’s extremely suspicious.”
“Really helpful Wrath.” Envy took a deep breath. “Great addition you’ve made.”
“Go fu-”
“That’s enough! I’m going back to my abode to make a plan. Since you idiots can’t come up with anything good!” Pride picked up the folder along with the notes they had made. “I’ll figure something out and arrange a meeting with him. Expect a text when I’m ready.” She walked out of the apartment. The sun set as she traveled back to where she lived.
Pride groaned as she closed the door behind her. I’ll need to get my own vehicle. I can’t stand them talking to me. She sighed, throwing her things on the couch. Her eyes noticed the book the angels had given her. She grabbed it and sat back down. Reading a passage she had marked before.
Discover what the horsemen shall use or do to break the seals. Prevent that from happening. When you do so contact us.
Can you be more vague? Pride scoffed. They gave me this job. If they knew they would tell me. She ran her hand threw her hair. A sigh escaped her lips. “So they must not know,” Pride assured herself.
Pride laid there for many hours. She did what she did for centuries upon centuries. Merely exist. Hoping to be useful soon.
She pulled herself off the couch noticing out the window that it was mid-day. At least it seemed so. It didn’t matter. She pulled up a map on her phone. Probably best to pick a secluded area. A forest will probably work. She spent an hour researching nearby forests. Eventually managing to find one which would be a good place to go. Little possibility of human contact. Hours upon hours away from civilization. A forest perfect for meeting one of the beings who would be responsible for the world ending. She texted him the location.
Conquest heard the ping of his text message notification. He sighed as he moved his gaze from the bright lights of Las Vegas. The text confused him at first. The address pulling up on his map app to a forest in the middle of nowhere. He saw the sender. “Lucifer’s secretary” he had put as the contact’s name. He groaned. Deal with that later. He turned off his phone as the driver told him they arrived.
He stepped out and stared down at the casino. Sitri had confirmed that Lust and therefore Greed would be there. He adjusted his tie and quickly glanced at the rearview mirror. Briefly staring at his reflection. His dark blue eyes and hair that appeared to be greying but hadn’t ever changed color. His eternally middle-aged face stared back at him with cold resolve.
He wandered through the casino. Looking into each figure searching for a demon. He had seen a few but were without any further examination not them. Too weak. A man in shock bumped into him mindlessly saying sorry. His eyes locked in a five-yard stare. That’ll do. He walked in the direction the man came from.
“I’m sorry, good sirs. You’ve been outplayed.” A blonde man smirked to himself. Piles of chips sat before him. Conquest focused his gaze… just to be sure. In place of the human soul, there was one of darkness. Almost empty but with a hint of something. Not as prominent as humans. A demon, a powerful one… Greed. “Well if you will excuse me.” Greed checked his phone. “My friend should be done now with her get together.” One of Greed’s demon servants collected his winnings for him. As Greed stood up they met eyes. He nodded at Conquest before walking away. Conquest noticed him motion to follow once he was far away.
When Conquest caught up Greed was leaning against a wall. An elevator next to him. Fiddling his body’s medium length blonde hair. “Mind if we talk somewhere more private?” He spoke in his elegant smooth voice.
“Not at all,” Conquest answered. A chime sounded behind them. They both shuffled into the empty elevator. Soft music played. Bouncing off the elegant walls without a blemish or ounce of dirt.
“So how’s business?” Greed spoke first. His blue eyes scanning Conquest.
“Same old, same old. It’s gotten so much easier since we last talked. I can’t believe I used to have to travel for work. I don’t even have to get out of my mansion to manipulate people.” He smiled wistfully. “I imagine things have gotten much more fun for you.”
“Oh, it’s been an absolute delight.” Greed beamed before his face fell. “Well… for the most part. More things to spend it on sure but-” Greed groaned. “Now there are paper trails for everything. It’s all tracked. I used to be able to possess some servant and have them steal whatever I wanted. Ship it all out then leave them to deal with it. Yeah, it was boring back then but so much easier.”
“Oh but I’m sure Lust is loving it,” Conquest replied. Seeing that they were getting fairly high up.
“Of course.” Greed smiled. “How could she not? Don’t see how her feelings have anything to do with me though.” The doors made a chime as they opened. Conquest noticed they were at the presidential suite. Greed led him in. Bottles of booze, money, and expensive things littered the luxurious room. Lust sat curled up on the couch browsing her phone. She looked up then in surprise at Conquest.
“Didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Purely for business,” Conquest growled. “I would like to get out of here as soon as possible. Busy.” Lust rolled her eyes. Pulling herself off the couch. She walked to the bar. Then poured them all something to drink.
“And what would that business be?” She said turned away. Greed eyed Conquest from the side. Lust handed the two of them some whiskey. Keeping one to herself.
“I was looking to speak to War about a possible collaboration. I don’t have his current information. He’s always bouncing around identities. My demons would have to go through Envy then to Wrath then to the demons Wrath gave to War. I would like to expedite the process. Wrath despises you so I figured Greed could talk to her.” Conquest said evenly. Lust seemed to find some enjoyment in it. Laughing at him. Conquest glared into her.
“Sorry,” She sighed. Stopping her laughter. “But good luck with that. Wrath’s been hard to get ahold of.” Conquest narrowed his eyes. “She’s been spending time here. Well not here, Earth.”
Conquest’s eyes shot open in surprise. “She hates it here. That’s why she was given the job of managing us. Why would she ever come here of her own free will?”
“Don’t know has something to do with a human she is hanging around. Weird shit has been going on for months now.” Lust went silent for a few moments. Deciding her next words. She put on a smirk and a cocky attitude. “Hell, Pride’s been going behind Lucifer’s back.”
Conquest stalled frozen for a few seconds. His ever-present scowl grew. Lust did her best to hide the actual smirk which wanted to spread across her face. “Really now?”
“Yeah,” She laughed. Doing her best to seem like the words slipped out of her mouth with no thought. “Lucifer thinks the angels got her. She’s been flouncing around the human world. Good on her I say.” Conquest eyes traveled to the floor. His eyebrows scrunched together. He turned on his heels and walked away. “Thought you had a message for War,” Lust called out as he walked away. He placed the untouched whiskey on the table.
“My plans have changed. I’ll come back later.” He closed the door behind him.
Lust downed her glass before grabbing his. Swirling it around in her hand. Watching the ice bounce off the glass. “Didn’t I always tell you to hold onto your cards until the best moment.” Greed spoke behind her. Lust didn’t need to turn around to see his expression. She could hear annoyance drip from his voice.
Lust chuckled before turning around. She placed the glass back on the table. Bouncing over to Greed. She pinched one of his cheeks. “I’ll pick a good game over winning any day.” She spoke in her velvety voice. Greed swatted her hand away. “Especially one I don’t have any chips in.”
