At first glance, the room was nothing special. It was small, with two bookshelves behind a desk. Candles were placed around the room to give it a dim, mysterious look. As I approached, I saw a man sitting there, waiting for me. Wait - it was not a man. He seemed to be a satyr, with short horns poking out of his head.
"Welcome to your Choosing, Miss Perez," the satyr said. "I am Professor Kovtich and we'll be looking at your energy to discover your element." He took a teacup from under his desk and poured some strange concoction in it. "Drink this first," he said, handing the steaming cup to me. I looked nervously at the clear liquid. It didn't look very edible. I sighed and tipped it back. To my surprise, it tasted minty with a hint of a peach, a somehow appealing flavour. "Now hold on tight to this crystal ball," Professor Kovtich said. I took the large crystal ball in my hands. The smoke inside of it began to swirl and change colours. I felt my head pounding as the colours swirled and swirled and swirled. Black began to creep into the corners of my vision. Then all was dark.
"Miss Perez?"
I felt myself being shaken awake roughly. "What happened?" I said, looking around wildly. "This happened." Professor Kovtich replied with a smile. He held out the crystal ball I had been holding. The smoke inside was swirling in two colours: silver and purple. "What does it mean?" I asked, confused. "This? This means history, young lady. You are the first Attuned in two hundred years to have a combination of one legendary element and one super-element." he replied. "Two hundred years..." I whispered in shock.
"Indeed. Look closely." Professor Kovtich pointed to the silver smoke that took up more than half of the orb. "Your main element is a legendary one: Moon. Being a Moon-El means that you are able to channel your powers directly from the Moon and use many special spells. Your powers also get a significant boost at night." He pointed at the purple smoke. "Purple indicates the element of space. This means that you are also skilled in the creation of portals. Having Space-El affinities is very helpful in creating passageways and storing items and objects." "I think my grandmother's a Space-El too," I said, thinking back to how she opened the portal in the tree. "It is possible that you inherited her element." Professor Kovtich replied. "And that's not all. Looking at your orb," he shook the orb quickly and pointed at a small smokeless space "It's quite probable that you will develop a third affinity." "Another element?" I asked, surprised. "Yes," he replied. "There's no doubt that you are the possibly the most powerful student at Silverleaf. Just remember, use those powers wisely." He gave me a pat on the back and ushered me out of the room by another door.
"How did it go?" a soft voice asked. I turned to see Freya Opilio leaning against the wall and looking at me curiously. "It went well, I guess," I said. I didn't feel like revealing what happened just yet. "How did yours go?" I asked instead. "Pretty well," she replied. "I'm a Flame-Att and a Wind-Att." "Selene!" I heard Misha yell my name enthusiastically as she burst out of the door. "I did it! I'm a Flame-Att!! Who-hoo!!!" "Really? That's great!" I said, turning towards her. "You'll be able to join the House of Flame!" "How about you?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "Let me guess: Water-Att?" "Nope." I said. "Not even close." "K, then. Spill." she said. "I'm a Space-Att." I said, tactically deciding to not mention my main element. "Damn, girl!" Misha said with a smile. "That's high class!" As we were talking, a steady stream of students trickled out from the door, each finding their friends. Just as I was about to ask Misha about the Houses, Headmistress Goldenburg appeared. "Silence, everybody!" she said. "We will now proceed back to the Great Hall, where your House will be chosen. Once you choose a House, that House symbol will be emprinted on your uniforms." Everyone quieted down as we followed her back to the hall.
The Great Hall was full of students. It was split into eight sections, some bigger than others. I noticed that there were only a few students in the House of Space, only one in the House of Time and none the House of Sun and Moon. I felt conflicted. If I joined the House of Moon, I instantly placed a big fat target on myself. If I joined the House of Space, the others would discover my main element sooner or later. I continued to debate as I followed the others to the front of the hall.
"Mentors of each house, step forward." Headmistress Goldenburg said. I watched as six students from the Houses come to the front. Freya stepped forward to meet them. She didn't hesitate before saying "I, Freya Opilio, wish to enter the House of Wind." A tall, lanky boy lowered his head. "We accept you into our House." Instantly, the people from the House of Wind started to applaud, welcoming their newest member. Freya smiled as she made her way towards their table. I watched the line get shorter and shorter, a familiar queasy feeling stirring in my stomach. Misha stepped forward, proclaiming her wish to join the House of Flame. She gave me an encouraging smile as she headed towards her new House. Then it was my turn. I stepped forward, facing the Mentors. I spotted Professor Kovtich standing at the back of the hall. He gave me a nod.
Taking a deep breath, I said "I, Selene Perez, wish to enter the House of Moon."
Things are getting interesting... Hope you enjoyed the longer chapter!
