The Attuned

Signs of Trouble

Signs of Trouble

Aug 22, 2020

The hall was in an uproar. People left and right were standing up and climbing on tables to look at the scene. It was Headmistress Goldenburg that calmed everyone down. "Sonitus" she said, placing a finger to her throat. Her voice came out amplified by the spell. "Silence!" she yelled.

A tense stillness fell over everyone. "I understand that this is a surprise, but - " Before she could finish her sentence, a dark spectre appeared in the middle of the hall. It formed the shape of a horned man, and flew towards me at an alarming speed, knocking over a few of the Mentors. Its burning hand wrapped around my throat and I started to gasp for air. This was it, I thought. I was going to die before I even started my journey into the world of magic. But a little voice in my head whispered, "You are a Moon-El, Selene Perez. It should take more than a mere spectre to end you..." and gave me a spell.

With the last of my strength, I shouted "Luna destruam!" A silver beam of light shot out from my hands, piercing through the spectre. With an agonizing scream, it disintegrated until it was only a small sphere of dark matter. "This is not the end, Selene Perez," it said. "My lord will achieve his task." "Luna destruam!" I said again, focusing on the small sphere. "Bless Ezo!" the spectre screamed, before vanishing.

I looked around in shock as Headmistress Goldenburg raced towards me. "Miss Perez, are you alright? What happened?" I placed a hand around my throat and winced. Strangely, there didn't seem to be any burn marks, but I had a pretty nasty bruise around my throat. "A creature. I think it was a spectre or something." I said. "Are you sure? There are no such things as spectres here. All dark creatures were banished with Ezo." she replied with a frown. "I don't know." I replied, picturing the spectre's horns. "It seemed as if it was made up of dark smoke. It had horns and it literally flew across the room and tried to choke me." Headmistress Goldenburg frowned. "How did you repel it, then?" she asked, still unconvinced. "I don't know..." I said. "A spell just came to be all of a sudden. I think it was - "

"It was Luna destruam." said a low voice behind me. I spun around to see a guy. He was a head taller than me, with gold hair, high cheekbones and piercing blue eyes. From how the girls were whispering behind him, he seemed to fit the description of one of those popular jocks. I felt my cheeks heating up and couldn't help but feel embarrassed. Out of all the guys that could say something, it had to be a guy like him. "Mr. Adler, there you are." Headmistress Goldenburg said, turning around and raising an eyebrow. "You understand that as a member of Silverleaf, you are required to attend the Choosing?" "I apologize ma'am." the boy replied. "You were able to witness the exchange?" she continued to ask. "Yes ma'am" he replied. "I believe the creature was targeting legendary Attuned.

During the exchange, I noticed that everyone seemed to be frozen, except for Miss Perez and I." I turned towards him, noticing the symbol emprinted on his uniform. A sun. He was a Sun-El...! I grit my teeth. "Well if you happened to be conscious, maybe you could have helped me!" I said. "In case you didn't notice, I nearly died!" I yelled, pointing at my throat. He didn't seem fazed. He waved his hand to where I was standing. "You seemed to handle just fine. And as we can both see, you're not dead." I clenched my fists together. Arrogant ass. Seeming to notice the rising tension, Headmistress Goldenburg cleared her throat. "I trust your word, Mr. Alder and I will investigate this further into this matter." she said. "Miss Perez, bring a friend with you and head to the infirmary. It's quite a nasty bruise." "Of course, ma'am." I said, shooting a glare at boy. "Before you go, I would like to see both of you in my office tomorrow morning. 7 am sharp." Headmistress Goldenburg continued. Then realizing that my ceremony was not yet complete, she said "On behalf of the ancient members of the House of Moon, we accept your request. I now name you the Mentor of the House of Moon." I bowed my head to her and quickly walked to the empty Moon table. It was not even the end of my first day and I had already got an appointment to the Headmistress' office.

This year was not starting well at all.

Sorry for the shorter chapter! I'll try to make the next one longer.
