Giean’s Perspective
There are no words to describe the wave of relief that rolls over me upon finding the baby dragon alive and safe. It is obvious the boy saved the dragon egg from these bandits before it hatched. The broken arrows and bow around the corpse tell me the boy is a hunter. Today was an unlucky day for him, finding the bandits before me. The bottom of the egg shell still sits in his lap while he and the baby dragon clutch each other.
“Surround him.” I tell my Pacts while the boy takes me in with his glazed eyes.
Even if he is not an enemy, I cannot have him running away with the baby. He doesn’t even seem to noticed as Bu takes off from my shoulder.
“There is nowhere for you to run.” I say as I climb down from Fen’s back.
His head swivels as he takes in my Mana Beast surrounding him. The baby dragon seems to shiver as he takes in Bu, it has good senses already. I feel bad as the boy looks at me again. He has given up, resigned himself to his fate. As I reach down to pick up the baby dragon it holds tight to him while the boy lets it go.
I pull harder, he screams as the dragon’s claws shred his flesh and shirt. I look down at his chest, I’m not nearly as lucky as I thought. A blood red tattoo in the shape of a dragon blazed on his chest, right over his heart. The baby dragon formed a pact with him, worse an uneven pact. Based on the colour, the boy will be dead within the day.
I lower the baby dragon back onto the boy’s chest, he winces as it digs its claws back into his skin. the dragon mews happily as it rests its heads back on his shoulder. I walk around the boy, picking him up like I did the dragon, and place him on Fen’s back, I then hopped up in front of him.
“What is going on? Who are you?” the boy asks as his shock starts to wear off.
“My name is Giean Beastlord next head of the Beastlord house.” The boy falls very quiet.
“As for your other question. I would suggest you hold on; we are going to go save the world.” He didn’t seem to understand until Fen took off and his arms wrapped around my waist like a vice.
“Slow down.” I tell Fen as he runs back towards the mother.
I place my arm over the boy’s. Even at this speed he would suffer serious injury if he took the wind pressure straight on. Bu landed on my shoulder again and spent ride back to the mother staring at the baby dragon. Since I had Fen slow down Lin and Sandy could keep up this time running alongside us. the boy made the mistake of trying to talk on our quick trip to the mountain. The air was promptly ripped from his lungs forcing me to use my mana to manipulate the air essence around us creating an air bubble in which he can breathe.
It is frustrating. I know so many spells that could easily have fixed that problem but first I would have had to use beast magic. To avoid that extra step, I used much more Mana and focus to directly manipulate the air essence with my raw Mana. I did not have much time to think about the downsides of beast magic as the mother’s head burst through the clouds coming down to meet us.
I hear the boy gasp as the head larger than any man-made structure he has seen breaks through the thick swirling clouds. Even with this being my third time seeing her I still feel myself being overwhelm by her majesty. How it must feel for a simple village boy. His grip around my waist tightens as the baby peeks over my shoulder mewing gently at its mother.
“You have brought back my child.”
It is hard to believe that a few minutes ago the pressure she had given off was enough to kill. Now a soft gentle feeling wafts from the god. Still her voice pounds on my skull, the boy behind me pressing his hands against the sides of his head. I am impressed his brain hadn’t liquefied upon hearing her words.
“Yes, but there is a problem…” I realize for the first time I did not know her name. she had never bother to tell us. do you give your name to a dog? No, you just expect it to do as it is told and answer when you call for it.
“Go on.” She says her tone slightly harsher.
“This boy reached the egg before I did. Your child hatched and made a pact with him before I got there.”
“He,” the mother said identifying my struggle with the baby’s gender. “I do not see the problem.”
I was mistaken, she does not see us as dogs. We are insects to her, unimportant feeble insects that she needs to use to raise her child.
“he cannot withstand you sons’ power; it is killing him.” I plead.
The look in her eyes told me she did not understand. “you and your elders told me you would be able to handle raising my son till he took on his divine form. Do not disappoint me.”
Before I could protest that this boy was not one of us her head lifts above the clouds. I spur Fen after her but a blast of wind pushes the clouds into us. I look up in time to see her disappear from sight far above the earth. A single flap of her wings clears the clouds for miles around us.
“I am going to die.” The boy asks his hand clutching the baby dragon.
I hold back a sigh. “what is your name?”
“Ken.” He answers the fear evident in his eyes.
Turn back forward. “No Ken you are not going to die.” I say as I spur Fen back down the mountain towards the Beastwall.
