Interview with DualDragons

Interview with DualDragons

Aug 11, 2020

DualDragons: My name is Cesar, but online I'm known as Dual Dragons. I'm a mechanical engineering student in the Netherlands. But I'm also a hobbyist artist who dabbles both in traditional and digital art.

Q1: When did you get the idea for Rise of The Heroes?

DualDragons: Oh boy, strap in your seatbelts because it's quite a long story.

So back in high school, me and a friend were messing around with Python and we were making a text-based rpg. It contained stuff like turn-based attacks and magic, monsters and items. Eventually it came to a standstill because well, we didn't really have any extra resources or knowledge to continue the project.

However, I did find the story in the text game to be interesting at the time. So I drew a rough comic version of it, which I later started to digitalize after the encouragement of my friend. It's original name was Sorcerer's Rise.

The first attempt wasn't too good however. The art style was rough and ugly and I got hate for it on webtoon. The story was a bit amateur-ish as well.

Yet I was happy to make a comic (and even got two fanarts!)

Eventually though, my laptop crashed and I lost all the files.

I picked up the pieces and decided to do a large overhaul of the remaining ashes of Sorcerer's Rise. Lots of things were changed, like the story, character designs and of course the art.

And that is basically how RotH came to be as it is today (with development through the chapters of course)

Q2: What inspired you to make it into a comic rather than a novel?

DualDragons: I always liked drawing more than writing. As a kid I used to do (crude) comics with my brother. Being able to represent my characters visually always appealed to me.

It didn't help that I had to read a lot of books back in high school. So when I graduated, I had developed a bit of resentment against long pages of text. Which is why I decided not to do a novel (and why my plot scripts for RotH and other projects are usually not walls of text)

Q3: How long will the story be?

DualDragons: Good question. I was (and am still) struggling with that. The main turn of events (Andrew searching for his dad) will take about 9 or 10 chapters in total. I may do some extra canon stories of it afterwards.

Q4: Who do you take influence from?

DualDragons: My influences come from a lot of different places, or atleast that is what I think. Avatar and Pokémon were definitely big inspirations as a kid, so I imagine their influence have manifested inside me.

A small, recent influence is probably Kishimoto from Naruto (well, atleast part 1). I really enjoyed it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it influenced some stuff in RotH as well.

Lastly, I'm sure there are some Tapas creators whose works I follow that also influence me whenever I read their works. I'm like: "Ah, so they take a different approach?" and learn from it.

I'm sure there are more influences, but I would probably not be able to name them all

Q5: What are your hopes for the future of Rise of the Heroes?

DualDragons: Well, I just hope to keep improving with my writing and art. I also hope more people will read past the first few episodes

I am excited for certain moments in the story, though they are still far away. Can't wait to show them to my readers.

CM: It's been an honor interviewing you, anything you want to say to the readers before I end the interview?

DualDragons: Stay safe my homies, and never lose faith in yourself, you can do it! Thanks for having me!
