“So, this is the coffee shop?” my best friend, Jay, says as he eyes the restaurant down with scrutiny.
“Yes, this is where my angel works,” I sing as I hope the server from the other day gets our table. I didn’t get the chance to look at his name tag, but I won’t miss the opportunity this time. It’s been exactly two days since I was last here and I can’t wait to see him again. Jay narrows his eyes in perplexity as he stares at me. “What? Do you have something to say?”
“Well, “Jay starts “You’re just going through the motions of ending things with Amber. It wasn’t serious anyway, but it did leave an impact on you.”
“It was trial and error,” I say confidently, “This time it’s different, I just know it.”
“Just like Jade, Ruby, Violet, Pearl, and Scarlet?”
“You know that love is a tricky thing, it’s not like you’re going to be immediately swept off your feet,” I inform Jay to ease his skepticism.
Jay’s doubtful expression doesn’t budge as he sighs. “Whatever you say, bro.”
“Hello, what can I get you guys started for today?”
I quickly look up to see who the voice belonged to and immediately I am rewarded to see that it’s the server from before.
“Ah, yes!”, I respond as I straighten my posture. Even though I already know what I want to order, I still fumble through the menu looking at their options. I quickly sneak a glance at his badge to get his name. Jonah. I wonder if he remembers our encounter from the other day because I can’t seem to get it out of my mind.
“Can I get a small hot chocolate with whip cream?” I smile hoping it jogs his memory from the other day.
My reply doesn’t seem to faze him as he scribbles it onto a notepad. I must admit, a little part of me died inside but I’ll be damned if I stopped here. He takes Jay’s order and then collects our menus off the table. “Is there anything else I can get you?” Jonah asks.
“A smile” I winked at him.
For a moment, it seemed like his eye twitched. But it must’ve been my imagination. Jonah hesitates before his lips slowly curl into a somewhat of a smile. “I’ll go get started on your order,” he says before walking away.
He’s absolutely adorable.
“Oh, he definitely hates you,” Jay laughs,” So where’s this server you were talking about?” He says as he continues to scan the restaurant.
“It’s him,” I reply as I fidget with the lint inside of my jean pocket.
“Wait,” Jay pauses in an effort to gather his thoughts, “You mean to tell me that your heart has been broken so many times that you’ve switched to guys now?”
“No, it’s not like that! I thought you’d be more supportive of me since you’re my best friend,” I cry at Jay for being dismissive to my issues.
“ I could care less that you like a guy,” he says as he lets out another sigh before massaging the wrinkle in his brows, “I’m just saying that you never learn and always repeat the same cycle so when you come crying back to me don’t expect any sympathy.”
“But you’re always there for me when I need you the most,” I pout as I give Jay my best puppy dog eyes.
‘That’s not going to work on me,” Jay groans “I’ll be supporting you…just very far, far away.” I attempt to throw a bunch of napkins at Jay he successfully blocks it. I must admit that it is true, what Jay said but it’s different this time, I just know it. So, for right now all I can do hope that my feelings might be returned.
