“How was your weekend?” Lillian asked with a smile, as they started walking down the entrance hall and into to a corridor leading to the classrooms.
“Fine, just fine. Watched too much Spider-Man with Zai.” Danny couldn’t help but smile when he spoke about his little brother and his love for Spider-Man.
“Awh, so he still loves Spider-Man? I remember when we got him that pj’s for Christmas.”
“Yep, he was crazy happy. Mom had to buy him a new one when he grew out of them. But how about your weekend, huh?”
“Great! I hang out with some girls from my class, shopping and stuff. Y’know, that shit you think is boring.” She stuck out her tongue at him. “So have you heard anything from Natheniel yet? He wasn’t here last week, right?”
Danny shook his head. “No, I don’t know anything. He’s not in my class. Like I said, I haven’t heard anything from him since forever.”
He didn’t think it was anything strange about it, because he knew Natheniel didn’t exactly have a great family who cared for him, or anything that normal kids had. He also knew that he probably wasn’t the first person Nat would try to contact if he needed anything, and he didn’t blame him. Danny just hoped that he was alright and had a safe place to stay, but Nat was street smart and could handle himself. But still… Somewhere deep in his heart, it ached with worry. Because even if he had broke up with Nat over a year ago, he still loved him, and missed him badly. He just didn’t want to think about how he had hurt his feelings, didn’t think he had any rights to go back to him either. In the corner of his eye he could see Lillian nod at his words, like she knew what he was thinking of and didn’t say anything more. He sighed. Life was hard, way too hard sometimes. He had nothing left but to live it.
They came to the room where his first class of the day would be, and Lillian hugged him before walking away for her own class. As he stepped inside the classroom, Cassandra came over to him, a pretty girl with long dark brown hair. She grabbed his arm and started pulling him over to where a piano was standing.
“I know you guys know this song!” she said with her voice raised to everyone.
Danny felt like dying and couldn’t help but hope for a hole to open up in the floor for him to jump down into. He didn’t feel brave enough to stand on a stage to sing in front of others as he had been the spring he last had gone to this school.
“I’m happy you are in my class so we can show that Robin how good we are”, she whispered as she leaned against him.
He could feel his brain start to wind up. Why would they have to prove anything for Robin? He could still remember Robin, as he had known her for years, and she had always been great at singing. Was Cassandra jealous of her? Danny didn’t even feel like he was sure he ever wanted to stand on a stage again. Why was he even back here again? Why would everything have to be a stupid completion? Oh wait, life went on, and stupid things came along with it. How could he ever forget that? His gaze went over the class, looking desperate for any help.
